I was glad he went plastic, I disliked this era of squarepusher the most, many years later my opinion hasn't changed.

Not at all, then or now. Guess you never heard much 70s fusion. there were hundreds of bands that sounded like this some 25-30 yrs earlier, mostly before he was born (1975)
@thecynth38204 жыл бұрын
@@RocknJazzer Yeah, but not many people fused that 70's fusion sound in the way he did (especially in the more ambient and abrstract tracks in the album, but also in how the drum grooves has some reversed hits)
@RocknJazzer4 жыл бұрын
@@thecynth3820 - Yes they did in the 70s, you may not have heard any, but its out there, more on the fringes right between electric jazz and jazzier fusion and more avant european improv, which was all intermixing and not even labelled or defined as distinct genres then, or even now really...a grey area. In the end, I have found to never doubt the 70s, as it was such a massively wide open creative period, that everything has been done before in the 70s, regardless of genre...in rock, jazz, experimental, etc. It might be more obscure but the 70s precendents always prevail. That is the only reason I could connect to this SQP album, as it reminded me somewhat of the more abstract 70s stuff, tho not as jazzy, not as fusiony, etc. Tom Jenkinson likes some jazz and fusion, and it comes out his own way, but is not very unique when you come from the frame I do which is a diehard 70s jazz and fusion and avant improv euro for longer than Tom's been at it (I'm a little older than him and a musician as well...jazz and fusion mostly as you can guess, but also electronic and rock, funk, blues, etc etc). Since SQP fanbase is mostly electronic music fans who dont listen to or like much if any jazz or only the most popular bits, I can see how they would think Tom is coming up with something super unique TO THEM since they have not been exposed to the more esoteric 70s jazz and fusion, so am just pointing that out to people, that this sound and far beyond it has been explored by musicians in the 70s in depth, and if they dig it, to check out the roots of it as today that is easier than ever with whole YT chans dedicated to more obscure 70s european jazz and fusion etc. Ironic that the rise of synths and drum machines and disco and electronic and punk that led to SQP type music is basically what killed off the appreciation of jazz and musicianship of the 70s that he pays homage to on this album. He said this album was his acknowledgement to get back to basics real instruments and playing, after feeling he was sick of all the rigid programming and such he had done before, so wanted to make a radical departure. Lucky for him he could also play real instruments at a jazz/fusion level to do so, unlike many of his contemporaries in electronic music. There are many 70s jazz albums with backwards and overlapped drums and all kinds of craziness far beyond this. It's all good. I'm just saying in the end, the 70s was there first in like everything, even tho perhaps under the radar. I'm sure some SQP fans of his take on jazz/fusion will fine much 70s to like if they dig deeper beyond the basics of jazz+fusion. I could recommend a few YT channels on this for those who want to explore the roots of it and hear all kinds of crazy stuff, and much of it also has analog synths and modular sequencers and other craziness mixed into the jazz and fusion.
@thecynth38204 жыл бұрын
@@RocknJazzer Well, "It's hard to argue with his assessment". The backwards drums weren't the only element I thought was "uniquely electronic", I thought the very abstract tracks in the album (eg. Step 1), although that may be something was also done in the '70s. However, the jazz-fusion I've listen to is fairly limited, so I'm open to any suggestions you have.
