There was one moral winner in this match and that was Karim Abdul Gawad, brilliant player and gentleman, a pleasure to watch. The other player was not so nice to watch.

Well played Gawad you were the better player,with better sportsmanship

Ridiculous, the refs are sleeping on the job. Shameful victory. The ball was good, Gawad would have had match ball.

I respect Matthew never say die attitude but sportmanship was lacking Gawad comes to help you and you try and nail him for it. And then there is the pickup ??? WTF
@watching991348 жыл бұрын
TheFenrirWolf agree with your first point but no one at that level challenges a double bounce call on behalf of his opponent...

WHAT! A! MATCH! Nick is an absolute machine. So much more emotional now then he ever has been before. Great to see that it still means so much to him and at the age of 36 as well...

Holy shit that trickle boast at the end from Gawad at 10-9 in the fifth. So clutch, so beautiful

Gawad is a real class act. Matthew is a warrior with a win at all costs attitude. Matthew is impossible not to respect, and as an Englishman I support him obviously, but you can't help but admire and appreciate classy players like Gawad and Farag. It's a great thing for our sport that Gawad has achieved so much and shown that you don't need to be ruthless to be great. I predict Farag will do big things over the next few years and further demonstrate that being hard-nosed and brutal, like Matthew, isn't a necessity for success.
@chunghosong79048 жыл бұрын
As Nick said right after game with Farag he mentioned that technology is available and we should use the tech when it's needed. I guess this pick up situation at the last game we definitely need to use the technology not decided by referees or at least PSA should change the rule like players can review for this situation. I am really disappointed from this match poor judgement poor sportmanship
@eriksteenkamp36214 жыл бұрын
It is the decision to use the technology if the referees aren't sure thei can not use the technology out of own unsurtenty the players only have 2 rewies and if they are right they keep their review

to me Gawad won this game..
@jacobeliosoff12648 жыл бұрын
Ha I was rooting for Matthew, but harder to do after he tries to argue a point off a guy who could easily have put the ball away instead of conceding the let... And then the missed call at the end, just bad luck. Still a fantastic match though!
@watching991348 жыл бұрын
Funny point at 9-8 in the fifth, I thought it looked like Gawad assumed that Matthew fell down (because he tripped over his ankle) and by definition couldn't have returned the ball (only after did he point at the sweat marks)...having said that I'm not sure you should get a let for being a nice guy...having said *that* why was Matthew allowed to come off the court? I thought that was an automatic warning nowadays.
@duorah8 жыл бұрын
But if he hits a winner, wont Matthew appeal and get a let?
@watching991348 жыл бұрын
Kaustabh Duorah He could ask for one but he didn't signal for one before falling so in theory it would be too late to ask.
@cookesam6 Жыл бұрын
If your opponent has fallen you have the right to stop the rally given such a massive distraction (and usually danger) but you will only ever get a let, hence why most rallies continue on unless stopped by the ref
@rolfmhansen8 жыл бұрын
Hard nosed? Competitive? Bordering on poor sportsmanship mixed with referees that give in to his complaints ruined the finish here...

It is a shame that absolutely vital and match-turning decisions are based on the calls made by the already overworked referees, amidst the chaos and adrenaline of a big match. Squash more than any other sport absolutely needs to employ technology what with sometimes a gray area between lets, no lets, strokes, line calls, tins, pickups. Add to that the sometimes subjective decision making of the referees. I agree with the point made below - why was Nick Matthew allowed to strut outside the court, when a "lesser" player would not even be allowed to open the court door? Granted it was a big point, but still that is an automatic conduct warning, if not a stroke. Matthew is one of my all time favorite players and he deserves to win as much as anyone else on the circuit, but it would be fair to say that he does enjoy special privileges on the court. It is a pity that such a beautiful sport is marred by poor judgment both by players and referees. I hope PSA get their act together!
@artax34348 жыл бұрын
Please PSA, not using replays when available AND changing a crucial decision because of Matthew's blatant dishonesty (I do understand why he thought he deserved the point after his dive at 9-8 though) is ridiculous. These changes have been made in other sports with excellent results.

Totally agree to use technology in squash, badminton used technology to detect out and in, the quality of game improved, nowadays squash game speed is so fast, definitely need technology to help if they have the budget. Gawad slipped because he had contacted with Mattew in the match ball, what a sad case.
@99PorkChop998 жыл бұрын
Everyone is saying that Gawad should have won because of that call at the end, which to be fair was a good pick up, but Nick never even asked for a let when he dove towards the end of the last game yet he was given one anyway. He won that point fairly
@matthiasschulze3938 жыл бұрын
had NM missed the shot...it would have been called a let as well...he was tripped by AG's heel...it was a good let call

9:56 "That just shows you the competitive spirit in Mathew." Nope, that just shows you the colossal difference in the level of human empathy, dignity and sportsmanship possessed by the Englishman and the Egyptian... Followed by the "Ball was down! Ball was down!" lie too... Honestly, haven't personally seen a worse-refereed tournament before.

i think the 2-2 9-8 let-ball should be a point to matthew because gawad looks at him when he shoots, follows the shot until it hits the front wall then he turns to help him up
@hanfimaster8 жыл бұрын
Ana Mohammed El Gammal he looks at matthew turns away from him to keep an eye on the ball and when it hits the front wall he turns back to matthew who is basically up at this point. My opinion is that Gawad either must play the ball or go straight to help matthew

I wasn't that impressed with Matthew's sportsmanship at the end of the match. But this is probably his last year and maybe his last final ever at 36. So I can forgive him this time

I believe gawad didn't do any favour to himself He should've gone for the ball not for Mathew Things happen in squash people dive but he should've taken advantage of this And he would've been a winner
@ngzijian148 жыл бұрын
Naeem Akhtar yea i agree , but i dont think mattew dive tho , he was trying to get through the interference which force a bad movement from mattew , causing him to fall. Tho i felt mattew could have been more sportsman like..

Gawad won this match in so many ways... Not only was his pickup unrightfully called down, if he hadnt gone over to help mathew he could have made an easy point. But unlike Nick Mathew, who displayed the most disgusting behaviour and some of the worst sportsmanship I have seen yet in this game, Gawad is a true sportsman

Shameful refereeing - that ref should never ref again.
@stevehughes15105 жыл бұрын
A travesty of justice in this one.......how can an appeal be made to the video referee and the ball is clearly up from Gawad and yet the marker/referee says not up after that.......it makes a mockery of the video referee system.......I'm lost for words. Based on that you'd have to say that Gawad was robbed in this match..........it may not have had a influence on the final outcome but it does leave a big question in your mind doesn't it...........how can the refs get it so wrong......it beggars belief.
@Zamet18 жыл бұрын
