Watched Elias-Makin live - foreseeing a highlight of the tournament, certainly two of the most exciting young players. And indeed it was. First game and a half confirmed why they're seeded as they are: both return everything; both hit excellent length; but Elias puts the ball away given the slightest opportunity, and Makin just hits it to the back. But over time the warm conditions (bizarrely warm in NYC, 18°C) started to wear down Elias, whereas Makin just kept chugging. And meanwhile Makin started to show some strong finishing skills, as seen above. It is of course possible his lack of finishing earlier was intentional, to wear out Elias. (I'm amazed that their bios show Elias only 2kg heavier than Makin.) One thing I remember about Makin even from years ago, when he was just a low-ranked qualifier with exceptional retrievals, is he always showed that self-belief some players have, of believing they can win every game and being angry when they don't. You can't teach that.

Player at our club has a 100% record against Makin - this was a few years ago... he was a late developer.

Joel Makin is only 25 years old, surely he can push into the top 5 if he continues developing his game like he has been
@afterlife101spirit5 жыл бұрын
I reckon he can. Joel is amazingly fit and his racket skill and movement is only going to get better. I hope he gets to world number one. He’s a cool fella, genuinely nice.

Funny you said "push" because that's what I saw him do too in order to get a stroke; this time against Elias, but 3 weeks ago it was against Greg Lobban at the WSF World Team Championship 2019

John Adair fine margins at world class level. It’s the same for all players.

John Adair completely agree, don’t know why the refs never say anything such a shame for other players who just wanna play a clean game

elias vs makin: what happened in the game that frustrated elias so much? stroke/let calls or makin's retrievals?

I watched the entire match and he was pretty much letting EVERYTHING get to him. He will have to overcome that and get tougher mentally and emotionally if he wants to reach his full potential.

The comments in other videos that there is daylight between the top 5 and everyone else is pretty inaccurate I think. I'd suggest there would be 3-5% between them and say the bottom 30 players in the world. It's great to see some of the new talent coming through and seeing them shine in a bigger stage.

That's not a fair comparison of a display of sportsmanship - the dynamics of the match control the moment completely

@@cookesam6 Yes, it does make a difference, but I do think Gawad is a better sportsman nonetheless.
