I have no knowledge of MM, Cat or Farmall but I have watched and loved every minute of your efforts to overcome problems, especially with Christine. The parts cross reference material you have is worth its weight in gold !!! I worked in parts dept for several years and salvaged catalogs that were being discarded due to new versions that replaced them. Many have hand written info in the margins that are invaluable. The issue is most parts countermen today do not have access to any info that was once readily available. To find a bearing & race application according to ID & OD in this case, is beyond most sources capability today !!! Thanks for sharing how valuable these catalogs are today !!!!

That’s exactly what I have going on here as well, I’ve still got one parts store that will try to look up anything for me, but they’re mostly restricted to only what their modern online database has programmed into it. The days of the old paper interchange manuals are almost completely behind us.

@@squatch253 Been through something similar for my Fordson major! I wanted to add a spin on filter for the hydraulics, so I bought a suitable housing off ebay. As the oil was 15/W30 I knew an engine oil filter would do the job.(It is on return side so low pressure) Knew what size filter and thread I wanted. Went to the automotive parts store. Refused to sell me a filter by size/spec, said I needed registration number of car that it was to fit. So I did some research, found the make and model of car that used the filter I wanted. Then googled images of the car so I could find a suitable registration number and noted it. Went back and asked for an engine oil filter for car registration "XXX" "Certainly Sir", bought filter went home and screwed it on to the tractor, and it does the job just fine!

Kinda... funny if you look at it from a time perspective. Kids in the future will have to have antiquated laptops in their storage bins full with old programs witth parts. :))

Just seeing the edges on that sheet metal made me squirm. I've made my living in machining, so I'm perfectly at ease with stock and tooling spinning at high speed. But for some reason, I can't even walk past a rack of sheet metal without suffering a laceration of some sort. My hat is off to all of you tin knockers out there!

Fantastic video Toby! Having lots of books to cross-reference parts numbers are invaluable! My grandfather opened his small engine repair shop in 1965 and kept just about every parts book from then until now. And in doing so it allows you to keep track how the part numbers updated over the years. Yes it take more time but it saves you from going on a wild goose chance on the the internet. Really enjoy your content Squatch. Given you often paint parts and the machines themselves could you build a paint booth or similar on your land to give you a permanent place to paint? Appreciate there is a cost to this but it would be of benefit long term

Those aftermarket front wheels on that M look more like what should be on your x231 than the what you took off that 445 pedestal. I bet they are wider that 5.50-16 though.

Very cool. Maybe look at getting a fold-up gazebo with sides/ old trailer/ horse box/ shipping container, for use as a paint booth. Loosing weeks due to weather/ atmospherics is a pain (- I've been there).

I kinda gave up on bearings, and go straight to dimensional search. Mostly because there's a higher chance of finding stuff. On those occasions where i can't find the right one, i do a double check, i look for all the (closest +/- 1 or 2 mm) dimensions for the inner or outer race, then check the spec sheets to see which bearings can pair (outer from one, inner from another) and then combine them. Some bearings have thicker outer races, because they're "formulated" for thinner walls, like say in a pressed steel hub, so they need to bring their own structure to the A game, those are perfect to match (usually) with those inner races that are too small and don't match old bearing standards (ID of the hub). So far, mix matching has given me grief. Once in a blue moon i happen to stumble upon an odd geometry mix where the potential wear pattern doesn't match. I always do the pattern check with blue dykem, which is actually a good idea even on modern (as is) bearings... i've found a few reputable names trying to sell me junk once or twice. If i've exhausted my options, then i have the larger races that wouldn't otherwise fit, ground to size. It is what it is, sometimes it's actually cheaper than sourcing nos parts. The scalpers are getting really cheeky these days. About a year ago i wanted to get a double race bearing for a lathe gearbox, and i near damned choked at the price, it was actually more than the expensive off the shelf alternative...

Never had one of those bearing install tool kits. I just used one of the old races and cut a slit in it so the OD would shrink slightly which is a bit 'shade tree' but it worked. I probably have seven or eight of them still. When I get around to swapping out the fronts on my current car I might still be able to use a couple of them still. One of my fav hack tools was a BMFPB made from a F150 center link. Neat job with the fabrication, one of these days I'll probably get a small used lathe that hasn't been trashed.

I believe when you go to newer IH (06 and 56 series +) there's a factory light and factory heavy front hub option, but they are all 6 (or 8) bolt. However, I had heard the hubs interchange as you are doing and the bearing sets are different between. So I am curious if the bearing pairs match the IH parts listing for Heavy and Light hubs of the later tractors? I think Schwartz, Norden, etc used same spindle design as IH. Maybe the homework was done for you already in a 706 parts list and you just proved an engineer's published homework 😊 All good. Appreciate your sharing and the work that goes into all you do. ❤

Yeah I have no knowledge of or experience with the 06 and 56 series tractors, but I’ve ran across a couple of these Norden “heavies” at tractor shows that have had the IH hubs fitted, so I know it’s possible 👍

@@squatch253 1980s and 90s parts runs to the dealer were the best. The old guys knew the letter series by heart and the young guys had the 56-86 series covered. Someone would know or know which book had the info within minutes when you asked about interchanging or how to. If one of those guys told you "they're all the same," it really was true! And 100$ of parts would actually fill a long box pickup bed 😀

I really enjoy these videos, but have one small criticism. My Dad taught me, many decades ago, to not let any weight sit on a hydraulic jack, be it a bottle jack or anything else. One of the first tools Dad bought me was a pair of good jack stands and he made me use them religiously when working on cars or machinery. I was a bit surprised when you let the Super M sit on the jack while you were working on it. Other than that, a good video!

That’s what all the blocking under the jack was for, the jack could only settle about 1-1/2” before it hit the bottom of its stroke, so nothing had any chance of going anywhere 👍

Because it couldn't go anywhere even if the jack decided to settle - the reason for all of the blocking under the jack was to shorten its stroke to about 1-1/2", so after that it's the same situation as if everything was sitting on a redundant jack stand anyway :-)

Ok so this is going an interesting question. What is reason for the Norton front axle kit and how did benefit a farmer over the Farmall IH front non vee Row axle? You have mentioned it like the system improved the Farmers day. If so why didn't Farmall offer this type?

This Norden wide front offered heavier spindles for more strength, plus the 6-bolt hubs that mounted the one-piece steel rims that eliminated the 2-piece factory front wheels that would loosen up over time during loader work. IH wasn't concerned with this though, because they had not yet started offering factory build loaders for their tractors so their own wide fronts and 2-piece wheels satisfied all of their tractor requirements. But, just a few years after this Super M was built, IH finally got into the loader attachment market themselves and you started seeing these 6-bolt hubs and one-piece front wheels on tractors coming right out of the factory.

Yes, I can’t remember exactly what the name is now, but for a few years they were made that way. Look up the “Just a Few Acres Farm” channel on KZbin here, Pete did a restoration on his Farmall MD tractor about 3 years ago and he showed that same pedestal in one of his videos 👍

Probably not, they’re not really removable from the uprights and we don’t have a lathe large enough to fit them in the way they are - so at that point it would’ve been just leave the original Norden hubs in place, or find a genuine IH wide front to use.

Something you didn’t mention but I assume you checked the distance between the inner and outer bearings between the two hubs and spindles?

The spindles measure within 1/8” of each other in the bearing land department, so should be well within the range of adjustment. I’ve seen a couple other Norden “heavies” at tractor shows that have these IH hubs on them, so I know it must be possible 👍

Regarding the importance of the old parts manuals - in the future this kind of thing will simply not be possible. All the data held in a computer system somewhere will have been deleted, and there will be no hard copy (or perhaps means to access it, should it still exist). I wonder whether this problem (on a broader basis, not just the esoteric details of wheel bearings) is being considered from the perspective of future generations' knowledge of how to do things? Are national archives perhaps looking at this, I wonder?

You bring up a very valid point - digital archives can store massive amounts of information much more efficiently than paper - but without electricity the digital world simply disappears, whereas the paper can still be here 👍

This might be a stupid question, but I was wondering why you'd instal the bearing races before painting? My thinking is you wouldn't want paint on the surfaces that the races press into but you'd want paint even less on the races themselves? Maybe I'm overthinking it.

When I paint these, the hub caps are loosely bolted on at the front, and plastic plugs are installed in the rear openings so no paint will get into the bearing area. Because everything has to be handled with care after paint is applied, waiting until then to hammer on the races poses a high chance of ruining the fresh finish, so that’s why I install the races first 👍

I have a super MTA that has a Norton front end, did they make a standard and a HD version? Because mine uses the IH original style rims and centers.

That is my understanding - the “heavy” Norden had the larger spindles and 6-bolt hubs for loader work, for added strength plus it bypassed the common loose wheel problems that would eventually happen with the IH 2-piece front wheels.

Whenever I press something between a punch and die as you did today to make the grease cup, I coat top and bottom surface with wheel bearing grease to help it slide and hopefully not dig or destroy as much. Any thoughts on that?

Yes that’s very much a necessity when doing any type of serious forming. What we did here was only a slight deformation, so lubricating the surfaces wasn’t necessary 👍

Perhaps you can help me, I own a super A and I also own the grader blade attachments. But I am missing the lift bracket that goes on the lift arm pump bracket. It's a narrow curved arm with the mounting holes in it. Would you know where I could buy one I live in California and I cannot locate that part, thank you the show is great
