If you're doing trap bar deadlifts you have to stand on something because of the shorter range of motion. Romanian deadlifts are best for athletes. The ROM is phenomenal and hits the exact area in the discussion. One benefit of many is that deads build grip like a SOB! I always give beginners this routine: Deadlifts 3-5×5 Cleans 3-5×5 Clean&Jerk 3-5×5 Simple and to the point.

would you program conventional deadlifts in-season?

Not when dealing with a D1 or pro athlete. Reasons explained at the end of this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYvJZ4F8fZKokK8 It's different if you play hockey as a hobby and can pull conventional with good technique.

Hi, I was wondering does it have to be conventional or trap bar deadlifts or it can be a variation like single leg deadlift, Romanian or stiff legs ?

RDLs on one and two legs are fine as assistance work but nothing beats heavy barbells for strength gain. Also watch this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYvJZ4F8fZKokK8
