Tips for Trimming your Long-haired Guinea Pig!

Advice on cutting the hair of long-haired piggies, including texels, shelties/silkies, alpacas, peruvians, coronets and lunkayras!
Top tips:
* Take your piggie to a quiet room away from the noises of their cagemates.
* Use sharp, but preferably safety scissors.
* To keep an agitated piggie calm, stroke them often, avoid pulling on the hair - even a tiny pulling sensation that we might not even realise we're doing could make them jump away. Be patient, take it slow and give them a break halfway through if needed!
* Ever so gently lift hair up ready to cut, and around the rear using the scissors alone will help make it more comfortable for your piggie.
* With them on your lap, support them in the crook of your elbow whilst you trim around their bum!

I have a guinea pig that I think is a real mixture of breeds, she has a crest like an American crested, has crazy curly whiskers like a Rex, incredibly soft and fluffy fur like a rex and curls like a Texel. I like be her though and she is so calm and lovely 😊❤️❤️❤️❤️

Good video, and Annie is adorable! I recommend using electric clippers for cutting long haired pigs' fur. It's quicker, easier, and safer, and for some reason doesn't stress the pigs as much.

Then the i.net says to not bathe them that much either. 🤔💡 What if I just baby wipe him all the time?" Idk how he managed to do it. But some strand managed to attach itself to him & knot up. W/ a turd pellet wrapped in it. It's like a poop, just one poop pellet, kept following him around everywhere. Kinda a funny sight. But that was it for me. I knew I had give him a trim bc otherwise, that'd drive me crazy. I didn't care how skittish he was gonna be, how bad he wanted to scratch me. How gross it was. I just had to do it. He was actually way calmer the 2nd time. 🤷 But it prob just got more easy after he felt a little more comfortable w/ me.

What advice would you give someone who was cutting their guinea's hair for the first time? I got one of mine home from the pet shop and I don't think she's ever been trimmed. She needs a bath and a good cut (she's a little stinky), but when I tried she was so petrified she peed all over me. Is it just a case of persevering?

I'm curious. We have a long haired guinea pig and she is a bit more nervous, shy almost stressed when we hold her. She has tried to bite a couple of times. We haven't done her hair yet, but need to trim at least around her bottom. What would you suggest us do first? LOL We also LOVE your videos, they are a great help!!

Haha I often call her my lil sheep pig :) And yes, I think they feel safer, or perhaps it is because there is nowhere to run lol! I have used Gorgeous Guineas Lice n Easy, but I have some of their Posh n Go conditioning shampoo to try next time :)

I have a long-haired peruvian female who is almost a year old. she hates being trimmed! she squirms, jumps around, squeals very loudly and tries to bite me. I cannot touch her legs/tummy ever, even when not trying to get the icky hairs cut off. but my question is, is it necessary to trim the icky underbelly/bum hairs? or should I just leave it?

It is more hygienic and I find they are happier when their bottom area is kept clean and trimmed. Try letting her snuggle into your arm/a towel when shes on your lap when you're trying to cut her hair, if her face is hidden she might keep more still for you :)

Oh yes I forgot to mention that you could give them food as a distraction! :) Unfortunately that didn't work with Annie when I tried it, I think she was too protective over the food so it made things worse lol!

I googled how long it took for their hair to grow. But I saw these Reddit comments instead. One dude gave his a really horrible cut & then posted a pic of it. I'm bad for this but I thought it was absolutely hilarious. 😔 I got there bc I gave mine a bad hair cut. But it wasn't that bad 🤣😂. My poor Axl tho. His fur is all white &the bottom is like naturally brown. But he just looks permanently poopy peepy stained. So I cut it. Plus, I didn't want to bother w/ his fur soaked waste. I've only had him for a week. But the first time didn't go to great. 2nd time, I just let him sit on my arm, while softly talking to him, giving multiple kisses. He bit me gently a couple of times, tried to get away a couple of times. But not as aggressive as before. I actually cut way more off just now. I don't think he cares tho. His butt is just more visible at times now. He's prob just like ,"hmmm 🤔. It's feeling more breezey down there." :/ I'm pretty sure he knows I cut his hair tho. Especially w/ the clip it of hairs that were below him. But less baths, less odors, less hassle 👏. I hafta say I'm proud of myself for this. 😍 Hes still cute tho. I swear, pets are like human babies. No matter what they do, or how they look, they're still cute 🤗. - Annie

I have a texel who does have 2 medium sized mats, I got him from my cousins, so they were there when I got him. any advice on how to remove them? he gets really stressed every time I try to cut them out, or cut his hair in general, and it doesn't seem like scissors could get through them. they are on the top area of his butt. I've got two guinea pigs, one long hair and one shorter. I'd say only cut it if you see it is getting matted which probably won't happen too much if they have shorter hair anyway. You might be able to just brush it out, depending on how bad it is and how much they tend to sit in their own wee. Haha

oh shes a texel explains why you don't use shavings my sister has a texel and when we first got him we used shaving and the next day his fur was full of shavings texel+shavings= uncomforble piggies
