Cutting Guinea Pigs Hair

Hi everyone, here is a video of how I cut Lilly's hair. Her hair gets a trim every month or two so it is more hygienic for her as otherwise it trails along behind her. I hope this helps those of you that wanted a couple of tips. Lilly was really good today but sometimes I have to do half one day and half another day if she gets stressed out or won't sit still.

Nice video! Lily's so cute :) I have a long haired piggy, Roxy, and I cut her hair quite often, usually once she starts stepping on it. Would you recommend cutting it real short for the summer? The piggies live inside, we do take them outside occasionally.

Awwww! I have a very funny image of your girly tripping over her lovely long hair :D I cut Lilly's fairly short in summer to keep her more comfortable, I would definitely cut it pretty short if it gets really hot, it must be like wearing a thick coat all the time, I suppose it depends how hot your house gets :)

So lucky, lennys hairs all curly and wavy gets tangled all the time if i leave it it gets matted and hay gets stuck and its not good. So u dont understand how lucky you am! Good thing i enjoy brushing his hair haha x

I think she helps to keep it from getting tangled because she doesn't really like having it brushed, or she is too much of a lady to get it messed up hehe. Imagine if Gizmo had long hair :O x

Lily looks absolutely adorable! My guinea pig is still skittish. I adopted him 4 days ago and now, he has matted fur where his butt is. I don't want to go to the vet, because it will probably cost me a lot. Any tips on how I can do it?

Awwww bless him! Poor little mite, you may have to let him settle in for a while first, the less traumatic you can make it for him the better. Bribery works for my piggies, I also use blunt ended scissors so if they were to move or if i slipped, I wouldn't poke or scratch them. For some wriggley piggies I have one person to hold and one to cut. Sometimes you can't do it all in one go if they get restless, it may take a couple of gos. Good luck with your little boy x

I believe it is toxic, if your Guinea pig is in pain, take him/her to the vet and they will prescribe a Guinea pig safe painkiller like Metacam.

Takes half the video to get to the hair cutting I use rounded scissors to avoid accidentally poking my piggies much safer.

You might want to get a better pair of scissors. Yours are very dull which can cause issues. Invest in a better pair and they will last you. I had a Jersey Wooly rabbit that I had to clip every couple of weeks. A good quality sharp pair of scissors is your best friend.

laurendoerr They are new and cut her hair well, they cut it in one go, I don't need to hack at her lovely hair or anything. I don't know what issues they could cause unless they pulled her hair? What issues do you mean? I know a better pair would last me longer but I personally don't feel the need to spend so much when a pair will do pretty much the same job for £1, I will just need to replace them when they start to become blunt.
