“Up the junction” = in deep 💩 So upbeat and poppy sounding, but gut wrenching lyrics…takes some talent to pull that off effectively. And one of the few songs where the last words cite the song title for the first time. Props to the lad w/ good taste who requested this one! 🤠

A curiosity about this video. It was recorded inside the kitchen of Tittenhurst Park, John Lennon's former mansion. At the time of this recording, the house belonged to Ringo Starr, who rented out the studio to other bands. The studio was small, so the bands had to record in the other rooms of the house.

'Up the Junction' is London slang for being in deep trouble, as in the American 'Up the creek without a paddle'. It is also, like other lines in the song, a reference to the (at the time) working-class area of Clapham Junction. Lines such as "The Railway Arms went missing" and "No more nappies smelling" simply mean that they stopped going to their local pub, called The Railway Arms, to save money, and 'nappies' are what you would call a diaper, so that line is self-explanatory! You may be interested to know that the kitchen where the vid was filmed was the kitchen of a house owned and lived in by John Lennon (of Beatles fame); it was located somewhere in the South of England but I cannot remember where. It may also be more accurate to say that Greenday has US Squeeze vibes as Squeeze came first and they may even have influenced Greenday! This is the first reaction of yours I have seen. Reactions are always difficult, and yours was OK, but not much of you came through, and reading from Wikipedia etc is not really very spontaneous. Having watched many reactions, and the wildly incorrect assumptions and statements they often make (not you!), I often think that reactors would benefit from reading something about the band, and perhaps the song (though not listen to it), before they actually react to it. This would give background and context to inform the reaction whilst not detracting from the reaction's spontaneity. No reactor seems to do that, so perhaps that could be your reaction's USP!! Sorry for banging on!!

There are some songs that make you think of London (having lived there for many years) and this is one of them. The title refers to Clapham Junction in South London.

Wonderful little bit of story telling. Set in Clapham, London, best known for its railway junction, hence the reference.

Hey, John, thanks much - Squeeze were amazing and under-rated.. great musicians all, with fantastic songwriting and balance between the instruments... (you may have heard their main hit: "Tempted"...) I hope you listen to more... appreciate your reaction...(p.s. "Up the Junction' - as you may have figured out is kind of like "up sh*t creek")

Squeeze are a very unique band, with some really passionate, serious musical talent (including Jules Holland, of course, who's one of the most connected musicians in the world), who somehow devoted all of that to very quirky, understated music. Their 2 best-known 'break-out' hits were "Cool For Cats" which is a really weird song lyrically, and the very Western sounding "Labelled With Love", which was a powerful and superb song, but so completely out of left-field from the band that gave us so many of their other songs. I think it is telling that they arose during the 'New Wave' when Punk first really went big, as in many ways they are a sort of inverse of the usual Punk style. Usually with Punk, the musical ability is questionable to focus on the message, while with Squeeze, the lyrical message is the odd bit, and the musical talent is superb. Both styles offer a kind of 'everyman' music, where the songs relate to those not living jet-set lifestyles of glitz and glamour - with glitz and glamour being things so associated with the 70s and the disco era.
