Squeeze is one of my favorite bands. Their discography is really amazing. Glenn and Chris are amazingly talented songwriters. The keyboards were done by Jools Holland, who would later go on to become a TV celebrity. And the drums were done by Gilson Lavis, who is one of my favorite drummers of all time. Glad you enjoyed the song and I would highly recommend you check out some of their other stuff.

For me, perhaps the best Squeeze song. It just seems to flow so effortlessly. Influenced by Roxy Music's "Virginia Plain" according to the band, with regard to its lack of chorus, and saving the song title until the end. 1979, the year of the song's release, was a standout for brilliant music, and this is a perfect example.

There was a famous TV Play made in the late 60s called "Up the Junction" about young love and teenage pregnancy. Keyboard player Jools Holland is well known in the UK for his TV show Later with Jools Holland, in which bands from every genre and type play live on his show. One huge stage with 6 or 7 bands set up and waiting their turn to perform.

One of the greatest, and most moving British pop songs IMHO. Translation (for non-Brits): Clapham - working class region of London (Clapham Junction train station is an important railway intersection), nappy - diaper, Railway Arms - name of local pub. Tennner - 10 pounds (sterling), nifty - quickly...

Clapham Junction. Is a massive railway hub, biggest in Europe. So that links with the girl from Clapham plus a mention of RailwayArms, links into pubs, and finally being up the junction. Lyrics are slightly more intricate than would appear.

I'm not convinced the phrase, "Up the junction," was in regular colloquial use before this song was written. It was just something, that when you heard it, you had an immediate sense of what was meant. The title comes from a 1960's film about working class life, set around the London areas of Clapham Junction and Battersea. So, if you've seen that, or any number of the British films and TV shows of the 1960's and 1970's dealing with similar themes, this song will resonate with you that much more. It's a bit like Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks, in that respect. A US equivalent might be some of Bruce Springsteen's early songs. The genre was sometimes known as "kitchen sink drama," marking the rise to prominence of the working class in cultural and political life during this period. Ironically, 1979, the year this song was released, saw the arrival in power of Margaret Thatcher's government, and the beginning of the end of the working class dream this song represents.

Great analysis but this working-class Guy from a working-class family from the High Street where The Labour Party had its National HQ and near The largest Housing Estate in Northern Europe (then )and where there was 97% Social Housing had his life transformed for the better by Margeret Thatcher as she ended my dependency on The State and helped me buy my own House which I would never otherwise been able to afford to do...
@delorangeade3 жыл бұрын
@@Isleofskye My point really was that 1979 marked a massive cultural change in this country, the legacy of which remains with us today. It worked out well for some, for others, not so much. The social, political and economic benefits, or not, could be argued over ad infinitum, but the old world is never coming back

I haven't heard of this artist. Those are cool facts Shawn and Trey that you shared. That is a high honor, to call these songwriters the heir apparent to Lennon and McCartney. I like this song. It is a really cool song. I like the rocking style and the music and instrumentation. The lyrics are an interesting way of telling a story. You guys describe the song very well in your comments as you analyze the meaning. Trey, your rating of 8.5 is very high and Shawn, your rating of 8.0 is also high. You guys really like this song. I would rate this a strong 7.75.

lol Alissa we used to get these troll comments quite a bit when the channel started but its been a while. So the song was released in 1979 when i was 7 years old. It did NOT chart in the US. Exactly how should I know this song? Curious do you know Drake's catalogue really well? If not why not, according to Spotify and Billboard he is the biggest artist of this century and I am guessing you have been alive all century? Sse how illogical your question is? Now if you want to compare music knowledge I would be glad to do that with you all day. You did win the prize for rudest most illogical comment of the day so congrats on that.
