honestly its actually crazy how gong-yoo can manipulate only half his face like in 37:30. the left side (red) seems almost cocky and potentially represents the mask that he wears when he's outside, and the right side (blue/white) seems almost scared. i feel like if this actor were anyone else, this scene wouldn't have been as powerful as it is.

So a little info. Yes the director didn't have any plan for s2. He wrote s1 over a decade ago and probably revised it several times while trying to get producers for it. When he sold it to Netflix, he didn't think that it would blow up so big. So basically he didn't get paid as much as the show became popular. The director was very honest about the fact that he was doing this season for money. So basically he wrote the story after s1 but then I think Netflix (being money hungry) cut it into s2 and s3. So essentially s2 is just the set up and build up to s3 which is releasing in 2025. Hopefully the director gets paid fairly from these seasons

The director left some clear cliffhangers though, so I strongly believe he had silent hope for it to be a success. The creativity and production quality is insane and Hwang Dong-hyuk deserves all the praise for being able to adapt to his success.

He was still very much committed to making the show good and that's why he took 3 years to make this. Even in interviews, he was confident in his work. I was just pointing out what the process was like to give context and appreciated his honesty.

21:54 After binge watching the series now I know what he was doing by giving people the option to choose from bread and lottery instead of recruiting the people for the game. Basically he was checking what people will choose (New rule before adding=the voting clause=after each game) Bread means player's guaranteed leave from the game and live with their shares of the money(just like after eating the bread your stomach get full) Lottery means sacrificing the chance they gave and keep playing the game for people to get killed and money to get Piled up and increasing their shares and not a single homeless person winning the lottery means they wasted their chances( Metaphorically die left with nothing but a worthless piece of paper) Clap for the fine writing and the direction.Beautiful.

So in 'their' games, the humanity itself is out of the rule. Competition cannot exist when competitors cooperate. One's brutal defeat can be justified only when all competitors are considered to be selfish or bad. That's why people who run the games have a strong belief that all humans are evil. saying like "humans are all just pieces of trash, so surviving itself is justice and there's nothing wrong with what we're doing." The old man did. And the recruiter does in this episode. They are not just psychopaths. Just typical defense mechanism (= self-justification) which also makes them want to mock Gi-hoon who goes against their belief and enjoy mocking desperate people to prove their belief. Additionally, 'rock paper scissors minus one' is quite common in Korea. As the game speeds up, sometimes people make both hands the same shape unconsciously. Yeah, stupid but it happens.🤣🤣

I think the bread or lottery scene shows the recruiter is a narcissist. Watching people make the "wrong" decision and then throwing it back in their faces affirms his feelings of superiority over others. Interestingly enough, it is also a form of coping by reinforcing to him the idea that those who join the game deserve what they get because what happens in the games are the natural consequence of their own poor decisions. I do think there's a huge social commentary aspect of the scene as well. The bread option is a band-aid that will actually make no difference to resolve their situation. With the lottery option, they are choosing a chance to resolve their situation but they have a greater chance of getting nothing. This theme is consistent with the first season and the gambling: the only way for someone to get out of poverty is to hit the jackpot or win the lottery. Otherwise, they have to live in this perpetual state of hell, working hard to earn just enough wages to keep their nose above water.

The one guy who had the situation in his hand because of the rock, took away the rock that could make his friend lose (because his friend had scissors that would mean that the rock wins) instead of taking away the hand that would make his friend win ( because his friend had paper which would mean that the paper wins and the rock loses). This show is very subtle. I dont think the recruiter "likes" killing people, the entire game is based on twisted thought that these people are killing themselves. People know the consequences and still choose to play so "I am not killing them". Thats the thought process. Kind of like making an excuse for yourself for actually killing them. And the bread and lottery was just a validation for that theory. Speaking from Gong Yoo's charactter's perspective.

Ji Hun has started to do prove that same thing… That is why either Ji Hun or the recruiter have to die. However, Respect the game or not, Ji Hun has to live to destroy the squid game and I’m sure ji Hun would have acted otherwise if the last shot was his. It was just his recklessness which made him play till the end

Tbh, I think Gong Yoo's character has an internal god complex rooted in a buried inferiority complex. Hear me out first. Ever since the he was young, he was following orders. Like Gi-Hun said he was they're dog. I think subconsciously, even though he accepts it, he is aware of the unfortunate fact that he is under the system. So he parade around less fortunate people so twisted thinking he's righteous enough to give them a lesson. In those circumstances and scenarios, he's the one in control. Also, I just think that he's just a sadist. Imagine having to kill your dad, and your only takeaway is that you're cut out and good at killing as your job😂.

Unpopular opinion, Gong yoo appeal is his looks and charisma due this face and how it appeals to people when he makes facial expressions, if he was a different actor, that would have been hi job doing that character but he wouldn't have been called "interesting" character, but that's also ok Not saying he cannot act / perfom either in other movies or so, but here, that was his take lol, he didn't make anything extreme but make psycho faces Put an ugly fat guy doing the exact same thing, it would have been called psycho weird guy and most people but have been like "I'm glad he is dead" Psychology is weird when it comes to looks
