I felt heartbroken when Jiyeong said “Thanks for playing with me.” Jiyeong had no reason to win or leave the game. She might have detested herself throughout her life for what she had done. She must have thought she was useless. But it was Saebyuk who decided to give her a hand and become a teammate in the first place. Jiyeong was just grateful that Saebyuk became a friend with her and listened to what she couldn’t confess to others...😭

I think most people missed this because it was lost in translation but Jiyoung didn't just kill her father for her mother. She was sexually abused by him as well throughout her life. When Saebyuk asks for her name, Jiyoung only gives her first and then says she doesn't have a last name. There is a feeling of deep self loathing for victims of sexual abuse especially when it's by a family member, no less your dad. She wouldn't of had anyone to talk to this about. Most likely she wouldn't have told the police as well. Koreans fear public shame more than anything else and most likely she would have been revictimized. She would have taken this to her grave but for some reason, she felt she could share it with Saebyuk. She must have felt a need to just let go what she had been holding onto all this time. It seems Saebyuk was the first person she felt would--for a time--carry her pain.

Ji-Young was so thoughtful and considerate that at the very end she did everything in her power to take the load off Sae-Byeok's shoulders telling her "thank you", that it wasn't her fault. The same with the Oh-Il-Nam the old man. Also, "Sae-Byeok" in Korean means "dawn". In Korean "hyung" means "older brother" and is very informal/loving in a language and culture where formalities/etiquette mean everything, you'd *only ever* call someone "hyung" if you're blood, or very close and only if they permit you to do so. Until the very end, Ali was calling Sang-Wu "hyung" because he genuinely trusted and cared for him.

I really hate when people say "wait until this part!! Bring tissues!!!" They don't think it's a spoiler but it is. Nobody told YOU which part to anticipate and how you would feel, you got to experience the actual surprise with no expectations. Don't ruin other people's ability to experience it the same way you got to. By the time you get to the part you're already expecting and anticipating so you don't get the surprise or the emotion the director wanted you to feel in that moment.

The two girls 😢😢❤ Many feel extra sad after hearing about the daughter's trauma from her whole life story and straight into the squid -life or death- games. I realized it made more sense to me to see Jiyong's death as, calling her soul off of earth...To be free of the immense pain her humaness endured and absorbed throughout her short life..and transcending beyond that to eternally rip free from earthly bounds, finally, resting in peace. ❤

Jen hon you act as if crying when it hurts is some sort of character flaw, and it isn't, of course. As a 60yo veteran of two branches, I'm fine to let my tears roll when my heart aches - because the body needs the occasional cry to remain healthy, just as the forest needs the occasional fire. So feel free to open the waterworks, hehe. -It makes us want to hug our reactors when they cry, hehe. This episode made me realize how the writing was so efficient in getting us to care about these fictional people. Knowing it's all fake, someone was definitely cutting onions near my computer. That said, just would like to point out while you were "ugly crying :D ", you missed out that we don't actually "see" Ali dying. Just a zoom out of the guard behind him raising his gun and a quick cut to Sang Woos face for his reaction to the shot while the announcer pronounced him dead. Maybe the producers thought showing an 80 year old man getting his brains blown out was unnecessary? Or you two might be on the right track? You'll never know since you both decided not to watch any further (suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure.). :D

Actually, Jiyeong says "Thanks for being with me" / "Thanks for playing with me" in Korean, which hits so much harder 😭 I don't know why Netflix translated it as "I'm honored that we were partners", when it's not even remotely close to what she actually said in Korean..☹️

Netflix has 2 subtitle options the one that says English is the better one, the one that says English (CC) is the one that is translated from the English dub. We actually watched it with the original subtitles on Netflix that said "thanks for playing with me" it's the clip that we downloaded for editing purpose that is different. So we actually got the experience with the full effect.
