This was my first miniatures game. Such a special place in my heart. My dad had been diagnosed with liver disease and basically was slowly dying before my eyes, waiting for a transplant. I lost myself in miniatures and Mordheim was my firm favorite as the dark, apocalyptic tone really mirrored my feelings at the time. It was cathartic, almost therapeutic. Tuomas really changed my life with what he created.

Mordheim hit at the peak of my wargaming. We had a large group playing once a week and the only rule was your models had to be 'correct' by the next time we played. By correct we meant if you changed the guys gear, you had to modify the model to match. Caught an arrow to the face and somehow survived? You'll be modelling an eye patch this week. Everything needed to be done and repainted in the week by the next weekend or you didn't get to play that week. It was crazy hectic and amazing fun.

We did similar with Necromunda. It was great improvising bionics and injuries. The only downside was if the character died and then it became redundant, as it was so far from what the starting model was. I ended up with about 50 Delaques and over 20 hired gun variations. 😅

What's funny is that I'm not that big into tabletop wargaming (I mean, I love the models, and I want to start painting and all that, but the thought of putting together this huge army just doesn't interest me). But...I *love* Mordheim. It saddens me that it's no longer officially supported, because no other skirmish based game comes *close* to how great Mordheim was. It's factions were just *perfect* for the type of game that it wanted to be (though, they did eventually add Orks and Gobbos in a supplement later).

If they did it would be worse then the original, (Example - Adeptus Titanicus) And probably all Armies would not be supported.(Example - Ratskins, Scavies in Necromunda). And if they did they would go after anybody having Miniatures that are based on game. I think it would be worse if GW did rerelease this game all thing considered. And Yes I am a diehard GW Fan. I have Necromunda, Adeptus Titanicus, Aeronautica Imperialis, 40k X 5 armies, Fantasy X 6 Armies, Warmaster X 4 Armies, Advanced Heroquest, Man o' War, and several of their one off Games. And I have been playing since 1986 when Warhammer was first released and Rogue Trader was put in White Dwarf. Mordheim was a blast. When I was a kid and I was starting with role playing, wargames, etc, the idea of a game where your band could be persistent from one game to the next, changing and evolving was mindblowing. One of the main reasons why I've bought the Cursed City box is beacause it (the setting, the minis..) reminds me of Mordheim a lot. I would absolutely love it if GW launched the game again.

This is the game that really brought me to the Hobby. My cousin bought the starter box with some friends of his neighbourhood and we bougth some warbands or customized them from regiment boxes (I myself played dwarves treasure hunters and I only bought 1 warrior box 1 engineer and 2 troll slayers ). We had so much fun during two years, almost every weekend building terrains with cardboard and wood and playing campaigns... then one of the guy bought some eldars and we all progressively switched to 40K. So much good memories.

Mordheim is the pinnacle of my hobby shop days. We just used mini's from any game, anything that would be appropriate. It was so sick, I remember it so fondly. This local hobbyshop legend named Q who was a small, charismatic and well-spoken bald man, tore through my team of goblins early on, and somehow I proceeded to roll stat buffing save rolls for every one of my dead heroes after that first round, and became a force to be reckoned with for the rest of the campaign thereafter (even though I still did poorly probably because I was tied with the youngest there at like 14 (with my friend jon) going against the strategy of serious adult hobbyists). Seriously great game, props to all those guys. Some amazing memories. I still have my goblins in my closet, easily accessible if I ever manage to find an active game again. I also checked out the mordheim steam game, and though I can't see many people enjoying it, I think anyone like me that played the game when they were younger and just wants another little taste of it, can definitely get some serious enjoyment out of the game. I don't really recommend it for people who don't have the nostalgia though, because something was certainly lost in the translation between the real thing and the digital version.

Mordheim was my (re-)introduction to the hobby in the early 2000s (after previously only playing Hero Quest as a kid). A co-worker showed me the rules of the game after they had become "free" because GW stopped working on the game. This was around when the new WHF starter box Battle of Skull Pass was introduced, so I went to GW to buy this box solely to use the miniatures for Mordheim. With the "Empire in Flames" expansion, I was even able to use the Orks in Mordheim. One of my most beloved memories was, when my Ork warband (EiF rules) took on a band of Druchii. I only had one crossbow man in the warband, everyone else was melee specced (because.... Orks ;) ). After the game, my one and only crossbow man lost an eye. In the following games of the mini campaign we played, this Ork was the most feared of my whole warband - because he kept critting most of the time, when he shot at a target. Now I am mostly into Frostgrave (go figure ;) ), but Mordheim is still close to my heart. :)
@TimPoultney2 жыл бұрын
Mordheim is super special -- you hit every reason why so I won't reiterate, but it occupies more of my brain than I'd like to admit. I love the focus on small scale skirmishes and the atmosphere they created around the city itself. Mordheim itself is as much of a character as the player warbands (akin to how Gormengast is a character in that book series). I'd say that's why the terrain making is as huge of a thing as it is to that corner of the hobby. We need a push for more Mordheim content, get more eyes on the damned city!!

Broheim, the archive of all things Mordheim, has a fan-made Warband write-up for the "Night Haint", which is more or less what you're looking for. Although it does have a number of mechanical peculiarities, like requiring you to take a flesh-and-blood model (the "Corpse Master", basically a fantasy version of a 40K Null) and a Mortis Engine into battle just to function. You may want to dispense with those parts of the rules, if you lack the models or just don't appreciate having them imposed on what should be just "a ghost warband".

It's a good game but has some real balance issues. Certain factions can field real power-house characters (Possessed, Vampires, etc) and others just have certain pieces of equipment and stats that give them a real advantage (Eshin skaven, iirc). The other factions can really struggle to compete. I'd certainly scavenge some of the rules from Mordheim if I were trying to cobble together a GW-style skirmish game.

Don't complain about Undead, they don't gain experience so late campaign the henchmen are mild sauce. Yes the vampire is powerful, so is an ogre. Garlic is an item you can buy, which is hilarious and affects the vampire. You either buy strong items. Level up strong heroes. Or meet requirements for Chaos Gifts. Anyone can die, no individual carries the team. If you're an idiot, you're punished. If you play carefully, you'll live to see another day. The only experience I had playing Mordheim was having a bunch of games using the playtest version of the rules printed over several issues of White Dwarf. The core game kind of passed me by as at the time I didn't have a lot of money and was invested more into my 40k and Necromunda and couldn't stretch to another whole game line. I didn't even get around to picking up the Mordheim core book until it was more or less an unsupported game. But even after saying all that, I still get excited by Mordheim. I think that is a testament to how awesome this game actually was/is, the narrative, the themes, the art, you didn't even have to be playing it at the time to see how amazing this game was. It really is a distillation of what really made Warhammer Fantasy what it really was all tied up in this wonderful little line that trailed away from the core games. And I'll say I still love to watch and follow anything Mordheim related that comes up in the hobby community, so I'd really enjoy to see more video content on the game and future projects. Thanks for another awesome video, take care ;)

My friends and I have been playing a campaign to capture The City for about six months now. I made a small site for updates, homebrew rules and pictures. We get together every week or every couple of weeks, and interest for the game has only grown during this time. I put a map of the campaign on my wall, and we mark victories by attaching band's stickers on it. A lot of fun! Our current status: mordheim-assault.owlbeardm.com/img/map.jpg

Wow! Amazing video. Mordheim had a special place in my gaming heart. Got rid of nearly all of my WHFB and 40K mini’s years ago, but I couldn’t part from my big box of Mordheim scenery, books, town criers, and 8+ warbands….. This video brought back great memories! Thanks!

I player a lot of mordheim when it was release and I love the lore and the development of your warband aspect of the game but rules wise it has some serious flaws and unbalances. On those days it was normal to house rule everything so it wasnt much big of a deal but couldnt give the title of best game because of that. Mordheim disapeared because it was too good to be viable. No business can survive if your costumers pay just 30 dollars and play with that forever.

From Russia with love! Thanks, for that amazing video. Yeah, in each wargame club of our country there are fans of Mordheim. Even after 20 years many players make a lot of stuff for Mordheim, or interesting narrative compaigns Be enjoy with that best game from the old Gw developers. Now, greedy marketers of GW will no longer make such product. Now GW has other priorities, specifically - getting money No Warcry - was even close, and serves only as a donor of miniatures for the Great Mordheim!

One thing i love about Mordheim is that even a loss can be a win. About 20 years ago at the local GW store they had a Mordheim campaign runing. I joined mid campaign, and first game was against experienced dwarves that had already collected some XP. I got butchered pretty quick, but because my oponent was so strong i gathered so much XP that it was almost better than if i had won the game. A couple of weeks ago i watched you paint a whole army in 24hrs. Grab all those guys that helped, everyone builds and paints a warband for Mordheim and assemble/ build some terrain. Top it off with playing an all out game of mordheim. Haven't done that with Mordheim yet, but we used to play Warhammer Fantasy King of the hill (the tallest building/ hill is place exactly in the center of the board, and after 5 rounds (or when the game ends) the player with the most miniatures (point value) on that center wins.

I literally learnt what Mordheim was right this second, and now I want an endless stream of Mordheim content!! I'd love to see your squad take in a board and specially customise a ton of AOS and third-party minis to make your own awesome warbands! 😍

great video but you did miss out on Mordheim - Town Cryer for the extra rules and warbands
@felurianmasters43692 жыл бұрын
It was the rpg element. Plain. Simple. Everything else was executed great. Only issue was town crier exclusive rule additions, that made it difficult to complete the library. I fell out of hobbies shortly after obtaining box set, didn't witness its death, but inside me I will live on. A shame this one isn't still active, good on the community for bringing it back into focus.

regarding accessibility i remember how my brother and me, when we were teenagers, were just cutting out pieces of paper (in the correct size) and write "high elves spearmen" or "chaos knights" on it because we got all the miniatures our money and birthday gifts etc would allow for warhammer fantasy but there just was no way to get anywhere all the stuff we wanted...or paint it...or store it for that matter. casualties we just crossed off from the back to front and we folded the papers if the losses were amounting to a full row. fun times :)

Loved Mordheim, still my favourite GW game to date. I especially loved the post game injury/loot roles. In one campaign my captain had two peg legs, one arm, one eye and so on. He had Movement of 1!
@RenatoT-si7vv2 жыл бұрын
the beauty of this game is to have a core group of friends so you can see the evolution of your band, fall in love with some characters, see them die etc etc. same with the bands of your friends. This was a nice game, when we were not playing the regular warhammer fantasy battles of 2000+ points. I hope you can review Bloodbowl, amazing games also.

I think what makes Mordheim so fantastic is 1) it doesn’t try to cram too much into one game, at least in the original. They had a specific place in the Warhammer world, thought about what factions would be available at the time/place and didn’t break that by saying, “but every faction can join now.” That really helped make the world building more emersive. 2) The campaign was just the right combination of brutal, random and saving grace. Yes, you could get hammered by the tougher warband, but barring some really bad luck, you could bounce back. 3) Each faction had a different feel and challenge campaign-wise. Undead could be really nasty early in the campaign but most models couldn’t gain exp and so would struggle against warbands that managed to advance several heroes/henchmen groups. The Possessed can struggle early in a campaign but when they save enough gold to recruit a “wrecking ball” possessed, things can turn around. Moreover, in most cases only heroes get exp for kills/objectives but losing a hero in-game hurts your income post-game.
