@Floopus Doopus the thing is playing for fun can get ruined if the guitar itself is bad. I have tried to play metal on a no-name Chinese classical guitar for a year, and although I did not care about the sound, the experience was terrible. The guitar just did not suit me. The size of your hands does not matter, there is a video of a 10 year old playing Eruption, so anything is possible with some work.

My daughter got this exact guitar for her bday last year. The initial stringing wasn't done properly so it did go out of tune easily. I restrung it properly and did some slight adjustments to the intonation and it holds tune pretty well now. The bridge pickup is fairly dark but it doesn't constantly overdrive like the one in this video. I wouldn't say the clean tone is great but it does handle overdrive pretty well. She also got another guitar in the same price range that was considerably worse. I think this guitar is fairly nice for $189. I may end up dressing and polishing the frets a little because they are a little rough and the edges are somewhat sharp.

It's the nut! Seriously, I bit the "bullet" (strat) and got this one, in white. Yes it looks like the nut is ok, it just ..LOOKS that way but it was too high on mine and badly cut all the way. And sticky too. I spent much time getting that fixed , if it sounds out of tune when playing first position chords although it is fine open-string, it is always a badly cut nut. Tune the thing, check Relief, Adjust trussrod, fix Intonation then Noodle (TRAIN setup concept). But - it's not all this little one needs, it is very special. It has way too thin strings, and the hottest pickups I've ever seen in a strat and that includes that mustang special two humbucker recent version that I also got with this one. The strings on this beast are also wonky. Do not forget this is a very special thing- it is a VERY SHORT SCALE. As such, the right thing to do is use short scale strings , heavier gage- it comes with absolute rubbish strings on it, much too light for anything short scale. If you still have it, or for those folks who want to really use it- fix the nut, lube it (graphite or "nut sauce" grease thingie) , and get rid of the horrendous mismatched strings. Get short scale strings for it, and for Heaven's sake, try a much heavier gage ( heaviest you find in short scale). That aside, for the "too hot" pickups- yup that is another "special" , it's the first squire with pickups that hot in like..forever. Lower them to the plastic of the pickguard! and turn down the volume. If you handled many many 80's "power metal" beasts with ultra-hot pickups , the trick is to lower them more than you think is necessary ( almost to the pickguard line) and use the volume knob on the guitar- I know, the cheap tone stacks, anyone says open tone, open volume to the max and forget it- nope, that's a (small) exception to the rule- this one sounds just fine ..with its volume around 3-4 not 10!!! After all these rather elaborate steps I can tell you it plays fine! The bends are a joy , as is vibrato and the way it growls is ..unique (not in a bad way). For clean sounds: drop'em low (the pickups and the volume knob both!!!) and it will sing. As it comes from the factory it has : a sticky and badly cut nut, (usually too high but check thrice before you cut!) , too thin strings, the pickups stuck to the strings and hot like chilli (not bad if you drop'em and use the volume). So to use this you fix and adjust everything by the book then : after changing strings with appropriate gage and length- yes, short scale strings are a thing on these- lower the pickups and use volume swells. In clean passages , volume knob on 2 or 3, use amp to compensate as required. On dirty chanel, increase volume slightly and dial back the distortion a bit - and it growls!!! . Basically it really is a nice beast but a strange and fiddly one, not for guys and girls that seek something simple to use- and cannot be used "out of the box" under any circumstance. All that being said, give it the appropriate checkup as I described and it will be extremely nice.

I actually bought this guitar for my daughter because she really liked the look of it. I was super disappointed when I first played it, finding it sounded off with any chord I played. I ended up spending some extra time with it to figure out why. I found the guitar is actually just very sensitive to how hard you depress the strings between the frets (maybe because of the extremely short scale length). I measured the fret height relative to my fender meteora (made in mexico) and found they had basically the same fret height. I've gotten great tone out of this guitar if I'm just lighter on my string pressure (which is exactly what I want to teach my daughter anyways (light on the strings/ close to the fret)). I'm finding mine holds it tuning very well (maybe the build he is reviewing was defective or just needed a slight tightening of the tuner screw) I do agree that pulling on the neck does act like whammy bar big time, but i think that may also be influenced by the scale length. I bought a VOX VX15-GT as a starter amp for her, and I'm finding the pair let me play pristine cleans for RHCP BSSM stuff which I"ve always found difficult to match the tone without single coils. To summarize, I'm actually really impressed with this guitar matched with the VOX VX15-GT.

I have the Squire mini strat and totally agree that you cannot press down on the string too hard. On mine I replaced the tuners with standard fender tuners after drilling holes out a little bit. I also replaced the three pickups with very hot rail pickups. It sounds sweet now. My plan is to get one of these and do the same thing or similar to it. From what I've read I'll have to dress up the fret edges too.

I got my son the black FSR version of this, and although I hated the tuners (and replaced them with vintage-style), the guitar itself was pretty good for the price and size. I did polish the frets and change the strings. It can play clean no problem, but I would have liked to see proper Jazzmaster pickups on it. My son wants a tremolo on it, but I think that'd be a bad idea, haha.

My nephew was given a mini guitar for christmasa few years back, can't remember if it was fender or not. I just could NOT tune it. I'd go back and forth and back and forth and I just could not get it to sound in tune. It was like a demon would quietly follow me detuning the strings I'd already done as I went. I'm sure I tried pulling the strings and of course I was tuning "up" (as I always do) only. No chance my nephew could have got a decent sound. The big problem with this is they are aimed at kids and will just put them right off, as you say. It went unused then was sold on. Maybe slightly better tuners would help, and if so, why do the scrimp on something so basic when maybe £5 more might make a playable guitar? I've a great mini yamaha acoustic that holds tune and is so much fun, I want something else for the couch!

It’s a shame, because it looks like a nice guitar. And I’ve noticed that the squier you get, is the squier you’re stuck with. They’re a nice guitar, but I’ve found they’re kinda mod resistant and that’s where they fell short for me. Tuning holes were too big for vintage gotoh tuners, neck pockets are slightly smaller I think. And the bridge is drilled in such a way where you can only use the bridge it came with. Had all these problems with my Bullet Tele, which was also very heavy. Broke my heart; like this Jag did yours.

By the look and sound of it, the neck and joint are not flush and it might need some adjustment there, and the bolts on the neck are likely not tight enough ether. The scale issue on the neck though, I actually don't know much about the scales of guitars really. But if I would wager a guess when it comes to not being able to get proper cords out of it, that the neck would ether need to be made longer or shorter, or of course maybe the first possible fix I suggested might fix that issue as well. Now when it comes to those pickups, I would undo all the soldering and redo it properly. If that didn't fix the issue I would go through and find which part is bad and replace it. Providing you have the tools to do so, you can likely fix most of that little monsters issues, and you could make a series out of it. :) I hope all is well,

I watched the other reviews where they liked the guitar so I thought that maybe, you just have a beef with Squier. I have small fingers, I bought the guitar so that I could reach those long stretches. Well, I could reach the stretches but, you were absolutely right, there is something wrong with the scale. Playing up the fretboard is a tuning nightmare. The first string routinely catches under the frets. I did, however, like the tone when I used my good combo amp. I expected it to feel somewhat cheap because of its price. Sadly, the tuning issue makes it miserably unplayable. Does anyone know if the short scale Ibanez or the Chinese made Squire Mini Strat performs any better---especially in regard to playing in tune? And people, please take this review by The Guitar Manifesto as more accurate than the other reviews.. .

Over 500 videos on my channel mostly praising Squiers, so says a lot when I say this one was bad 🤣 just something ain't right with it. I've had many Squiers and Fenders with this scale length and none have ever had this issue.
@supertu77i
@supertu77i 3 жыл бұрын
the problem is the strings are too light for such a short scale. go with a .12 or even .13 string set and it will hold intonation much better, probably also the increased tension would lock better the tuners, givving a more natural feel to the guitar. about the pick ups... i cannot say much, as I only have the squire mini strat, which have workable ceramic cheap SSS.

did you try putting heavier strings on it Rob?...short scale and thin strings are a match made in hell this has a longer scale than a ric 325...21 inch for ric ...22 3/4 for this thing...never heard ric 325s called kids guitars...ad men and male vanity playing a part here...size isnt everything but quality is...i do think that these things should be made to as high a quality as their bigger siblings. personally i love short scale instruments....great for quick chord changesd...thats why j lennon esq favoured his 325s....i had one..loved it for same reason(mine was given to me by an old pro skiffle guitarist...cant name names...325 was of dubious origin....suffice to say he "got it" in 1963 and it was the only thing of value that he didnt turn into drink tokens and he passed it to me before his death......) i was seriously thinking of getting one of these but your vid has me doubting the expense on a paperweight...if it was good i would buy one right now...short scales have a charisma and sound that is unique....i would rather play rhythm on a short scale than an epi casino or telecaster ...or any other full scale...so much easier...esp as i use banjo type chord shapes a lot of the time with a short scale the notes are right under your fingers..whereas a full scale you need to sellotape pencils to your fingers...break your joints and hope you can reach those extended notes Try Thickers Strings...12s or 13s should pull the rabbit from the hat...let me know if that helps before i get one! Cheers n Skol Wulf

The descriptions I see for this instrument on popular music sites describe it not only as an affordable electric guitar for beginners, but also as a smaller, lighter weight, more manageable choice for kids. The 1 positive review it got on Sweetwater featured photo of a 5 year old girl carrying it grinning ear to ear. I think it is a children's guitar, not even entry level for an adult. The price point and size are the dead giveaways. Actually kind of a shame bcs. I am a lefty and I am entranced by the Jazzmaster shape but this model doesn't come lefty. Given the reported issues, I might go with a lefty Warmoth etc....parts version, add a Bare Knuckle SuperMassive P-90 bridge p/u and have a competent guitar tech/luthier put it together for me. Thank you for the funny and honest review though; hopefully it does inspire some future generation of 8 year old shredders to just start playing the electric guitar.

Hey man, just an idea - I don't want to be critical or anything - but you could have one or two really quality guitars for all the cheap ones you've got. I've recently downsized my group of guitars as it was spiralling into more like a "collection" than just a tool for being a musician, y'know? GAS was taking over playing, searching new gear & guitars over practice. Enough! I traded a few mid level guitars for a really good one that I mean to make my "One guitar".

I really wanted to buy a mini Jazzmaster and put a normal scale neck on it, as normal Jazzmaster body size feels too big for me. Do you think the body itself has a decent enough quality to spend that kind of money on it? (I don't have any good luthiers around who would be able to pull of a smaller Jazzmaster copy that has "factory" feel, look.. and smell🙂)
@theguitarmanifesto

I would even bother the body is really small would look a bit daft with a full size neck on. The intonation would be the biggest problem to fix, I guarantee that bridge would need moving to get it to intimate correctly.
