Honestly as a 5ft something woman this seems pretty suited for someone like me, I struggle playing guitars that have definitely been designed with men in mind so something smaller like this really appeals

Yes I’m a woman about 5’4 and with my smaller hands I love the mini’s that squire is turning out. I thought I was done with stratacasters; I didn’t like the weight and shape on my lap. But the mini is just perfect. Also; being light and smaller I’m more likely to throw it in the trunk with my acoustic and take both.

appreciate the review, wanting to learn guitar in retirement, so I bought a full size Parts Caster Strat with pretty high quality bits. Then a few Amps, and i practiced and practiced and barely figured out how to play simple single note tunes. But my hands started to get arthritic and it was harder and harder to play. I put it all in my car and went to a guy that sells Used Guitars and Amps. He was happy to take all my stuff on consignment, but he was disappointed i was quitting the guitar. He asked if I had seen the Squire Mini Jazzmaster. I loved the look of the Jazz master but the full size one was too much to deal with money and size. This mini was like 3/4 sized, lighter smaller and pretty easy to move around. So I decided to keep my cheesy Buotique Amp made out of an Organ Amp and take the Mini Jazzmaster in loan. I got home and assembled the Amp which is all the bits wired up but not in a cabinet. A nice small speaker no baffle. I plugged in the Mini JM and tried my two best one note at a time songs. I could easily reach the strings. My hands are average size i think not small but i have limited flexibity in a few joints. Yeah I realized it is a kids Guitar. And i did have a full scale Strat in Candy Red, and i play in my basement alone so i did not care if it was a Kids size. If i could keep playing i was happy. And it seems like I can!!!! the neck does get tight down at the nut. and yet with a little practice i was able to hold the right strings pretty good. Time will tell. I need to get my little amp into a box for better sound, then i will know if I need or want to change anything. I know i miss the tremolo action the three pickups and push pull on both Tone knobs, Heck this has One tone knob. I was actually thinking about a 4 string Cigar Box Electric Guitar because a Car Buddy has one and he liked it. I know the strings are farther apart on the nut end of the neck. I like this better so far. I should have a lot of money left over to upgrade if needed and get a nice box for the Amp. Hearing you play it gave me real hope. Thank You for the details, good to know a new Pick Guard could be used to add stuff easily, 3 pickups, two tone knobs etc etc. D
@DennisMurphey
@DennisMurphey 4 жыл бұрын
i went back to my basement and added pedals for delay and chorus and tried the Mini JM again. The intonation was nearly perfect, the low E was out but others held tune. After several hours i can away with mixed feelings. I miss my Candy Strat from my male ego, but not the mass and weight. The Mini is rigid, stable and has OK pickups. It is a real guitar, smaller. Better than a Uke or Cigar Box. A heavier body and longer neck might be better, but I got mine used for $130 US, That's so cheap i have to keep it. And be happy i can play at all. Your review was entertaining, informative but while yeah its a child's size it makes OK music and some folks are ok with the smaller scale. the fret edges are slightly rough and need polished but i think i can handle that. And a Red Tortoise Pick Guard to brighten it up. should be ok and fun, thank you for posting, i will be watching you. D

I have the same problem, and have been playing Jackson minions for ages and a jazz master mini is on my shopping list. Its reinvigorated my playing I've gone from looking at my strats and les Paul's hanging on the wall wanting to play but couldn't to practising every day 😁 I wish they wouldn't keep pushing these as kids guitars but sell them as what they are short scale guitars that are crazy fun to play. I hope your getting on alright with your playing I noticed your comment was from 6 months ago so i hipe your slowly starting to build up a bit of strength in your hands and enjoying playing again brother and maybe on day I'll see you playing somewhere 😀

I have a hereditary problem as my body destroys calluses, and by that I mean we (my family) don't get them. They start to form then go to bed to wake up with them 90-100% gone. It gets so bad that when I try to practise it feels like I am playing on razor blades and immediately have to stop. So much pain I am seven months in, and you wouldn't know that I wasn't in my first week. I play 10s, and I wonder if 8s would help at all? I did try 9's at first for the first month. I have 8's on the way (oos everywhere), but would this guitar be for me? I have tunnel carpal syndrome now thanks to how I have to wreck my wrist to hit the low strings. My hand size is 6.5in from wrist to the longest finger and 8 in from the tip of my pinky to the tip of my thumb. My fingers are the typical broad Germanic type.

they should advertise these for people who want an easier to play guitar, young or older people, and anybody like me who wants smaller fret gaps allowing for complex chords and bends. also you cannot evaluate neck dive like that, you have to put the guitar on, adjust your strap and stand. it also allows way thicker high E string, less breakage, and more consistent tone on the plain strings.

I think it's a mistake to think it's only for kids! It's for people who like light-weight short-scale guitars, and a twangy surf type tone. It sounds pretty good right out of the store. I can't find anything wrong with it, even the pickups sound fine. I need an excuse to change them for janglier, splitable pickups, but I really can't find one, LOL. The scale is not a problem, it feels very comfortable. The strings would need to be changed for a set of 10s: 9s feel lighter than slinkies on a regular-scale guitar. The bridge is very nice, nothing special, but works well. I'll change it one day for a trem bridge.

I am a 54 yro, I have played for years and every make kind major guitar over the years. I was in a bad MVA, which left me with neck and back pain. I have a mini strat and this would be a comparison. The mini strat has the Same bridge but Rose wood type neck. I am going to buy one of these. I am thinking it could be great for a lot guys like me. Old timers not Big "Benders" either. Small hands is as you said the key! I as some frustrated guitar players/hackers either have short stubbies or just smaller hands. Plus for some with aritherist it may also be easier. So I agree its likely aimed ad Youth, Females (smaller Hands) It will also appeal to older players who can easily drop 199us or 249 cdn on a extra guitar. Which could end up being Modded and thier go too unit. I sould waite for the Red model if one is comming. But I may just go ahead. Again for someone with Smaller hands and has neck and back issues. Looking for something "Leight weight" This looks really good to me. Plus not recording, with Pedals and Amp settings a lot can be covered or achived. I like the cavity pool cut and painted Ins. People can always drill the strings thru. I think for someone like me or even more advanced but with simular needs of the size and weight. This guitar could be modded out with all kinds of options. I have heard some recomend higher gage for mini's. You mentioned you had not played the Mini strat,(Maybe another added to your list) But if you have heard anything about the string guage. Thanks for a great review, I wish more did this style but thats what makes yours so much better. Seeing the Route allows for those interested in Modded no surprises! Weight for most would not likely be a factor unless really heavy. For me its a critical area. So thanks! I don't often reply, but I wanted to take a small amount of time as you have saved me hours!! Fact is every guitar is going to appeal to some and not others. This is one of those guitars. The people that will bennifit from what it offers will find it. Plus its a another option for a parent or other to give for a young starter! Again Starters, Females, Old Players that for years wore 12lbs les pauls and carried Marshall or Hiwatt stacks for years. lol Or for someone rehabing or living with chronic pain! Thanks again for a great clear and indepth review!!! Victor

Just a thought with the intention of being helpful, which I believe came to me via Dan Erlewine...perhaps relevant to one who may make changes to the circuitry in the future: putting a dab of wood glue on the tips of each pick guard screw before reassembly helps to prevent the holes in the body from becoming worn over time - especially in softer wood bodies like these.

I own one of the mini Strats, which I have strung for Nashville (high strung) tuning . I so love playing that that I want another mini something to play in standard tuning for a 60's type Musicmaster/Duo Sonic short scale vibe. They have a used mini Jazzmaster at my local Music Go Round which I'm thinking about doing a gear trade for.

Another use is for people who usually play guitars with a capo. I have one of these mini Jazzmasters and tuning up to G works really well (with the stock 9's). Terz guitar for cheap
@DennisMurphey
@DennisMurphey 4 жыл бұрын
if you tune to G that would mean you have to rethink all the Tabs yeah! I mean it makes sense but I am worried how to play the music right?
@rbndr
@rbndr 4 жыл бұрын
@@DennisMurphey It depends, it is all relative really. If you want to play along to a CD or with a band who has leaned the song in the original key, then yes it would cause problems, otherwise, you could just play it as you have learned it and it will be transposed to a higher key. Also, many songs are written to be played with a capo, the tabs for these tend to give the open chord positions with a note saying 'capo on the third fret' so there would be no problem with those tabs, or you could mentally transpose it. If it was someone's only guitar it would not be ideal to tune to G, but as an additional guitar it opens up new keys and a different sound, offers something different. Before I got one I was actually looking at buying a reverend terz guitar that is supposed to be tuned in G

I have a Tanglewood 57 Special Telecaster copy. You can choose top load or have the strings through the body, the bridge it has can do both - handy if you break a string (at the tuner) that's strung through you can reuse it as a top load until you replace the whole set.

I was looking for a short scale or mini to just grab & practice I do have a classic vibe Strat which is quite remarkable for the money I bought it about seven or eight years ago, I also bought a fender pawnshop special mustang because of small body size but I find it a bit awkward. I’m always looking for a thin neck light ...weight body guitar...

@@globalnova Let me explain something to YOU, Mister Condescending: From 2016-2020, the Affinity Jazzmaster wasn't the identical instrument to the general Jazzmaster. It was an HH instrument that skipped the complex switchology of the standard Jazzmaster. At the time this video was released, that was the Affinity Jazzmaster. Not the 2021 Affinity Jazzmaster that is a less expensive version of the standard instrument. So at the time I was noting, "Oh, this is cute. It's the (then-current) Affinity Jazzmaster, shrunk down." So your condescension is obnoxious and you should maybe consider reining it in.
@globalnova

@@katherineberger6329 these fabulous facts and superior semantics from an Affinity Aficionado notwithstanding, stating that a mini version of a guitar shape looks like a mini version of said shape is rather pointless. With its HH and lack of ott switching, for all intents and purposes it IS in fact a mini version of the affinity HH. it is, therefore it looks like. i get that you may have wanted to flex your squier prowess by stating the exact model that it resembles, but a cheap guitar generally aimed at kids is kind of expected to be basic.

Different instruments comes in different sizes, and it doesn't mean that smaller ones are meant for small ppl I.e kids. For example oud, mandolin, violin are small instruments, and makes one Feel like a giant when switching from guitar...but the small size instrument, has its own uniqueness and relation to the player and will take your fingers and mind to other territories, be it 'ethnic' instrument or modern one.

I have one of these, did a full setup and put 11-52's to make up for the short scale, the strings do feel thicker but the tension remains about the same as a normal size guitar, the surf green looks like a sun faded surf green compared to other surf green examples that I own, tuners are trash, Strap Buttons are trash, string trees are trash, bridge is ok but saddles are trash, pickups are ok. This is definitely not a jazzmaster but it seems to be imitating the player series jazzmaster over a traditional one minute the coil split, otherwise it's just an offset mini guitar with humbuckers. Great modding platform, awesome couch guitar, great for travel, maybe not the best for beginners though it'll get you by. If this is your only guitar then you'll probably want to buy another one soon, if you plan on modding then it can definitely be your primary axe. I plan on swapping out the pickups and adding some other mods like coil splitting and possibly installing a bigsby b5 mod or doing a string through mod, may or may not swap the neck with something still short scale but longer, I may refinish the guitar in satin with a true surf green or maybe a different color idk yet. Going to make a custom pickguard out of plexiglass and i will paint the under side of it with glow in the dark paint giving it an acrylic mint green look in regular lighting.
