Totally agree. I really don’t like when a bass has a rosewood fretboard and then a natural maple headstock. Squier seems to do matching headstocks more than Fender.

I had a new 69 Fender Mustang bass, had Blue Metalflake body and headstock, with Two Light Blue Competiion stripes also metalflake, with Pearloid pickguard, it was beautiful for a small bass

not that it matters, but for those who are curious, the body is a fender Bass VI body, which has the bottom half a jag bass and the top half of a P-bass. the neck has a coranado bass headstock, with a mustang bass bridge. Just a light spec for those who are to antsy to wait for the full review. Super cool bass, and even cooler demo honestly, a great first impression demo.

Squier definitely snuck the whole 2023 paranormal line-up out there with very little fanfare. I ordered the Nashville Strat based on the Anderton’s demo alone and I hope I won’t be disappointed. Looking forward to the full Rascal review!

It’s a Jazzmaster body. The 2023 Paranormal series is insanely good. I have the Jazzmaster XII and just got the Strat-O-Sonic in red. The entire line is flawless.

I peeled the pickguard off mine last night and the humbuckers have 4 conductor wiring! I ordered a couple mini switches for series/split/parallel modes.

Hey man I’ve been watching your work for a while, and I gotta say I think this bass is my fav. The back pickup sounds just like a stingray, the neck pickup is like an EB-0 bass, and both sound like a dark J bass. Incredible versatility

I really love these short scale/"mini basses" and Jr. sized models. I was looking at the Glarry GW101, Jackson Minion and Gretsch G2220. they all seem so cool and full of character.

Definitely excited for the full review. I have to say, Squier has been on something of a roll recently IMO - sure QC is hit and miss at times but they've made some very likeable basses recently

I should note the bass sounds killer with effects. I have one. You can definitely go into Kim Gordon territory with it. Killer short scale and finally a great alternative to the mustang. The original rascal cult classic. This one is next level.

Having seen Lobster’s other review on this plus the Epiphone Newport that is very poor QC, this one is much better and I think I could really live with this bass. Love the color and tone of this thing. Especially those huge full range pickups with the sound they have.

Sounds much better IMO now that they’ve ditched the lipstick pickups. Really like the color and especially the matching headstock but I’d definitely want to put something like an antique ivory flake pickguard on it. Seems like a fun bass to own and play.

The Rascal is a Fender Bass Vi body and a short scale bass neck! The original Raacal had this weird bridge that was like if someone melted the mustang bridge over a fire. But this one has a proper mustang bridge and those humbuckers would sound insane with some flats and a foam block string mute under the strings at the bridge!

Huge relief seeing your first impressions with this bass very positive and enjoying it. As soon as I saw these I instantly had GAS for one but was a bit unsure about the pickups without actually hearing one first. If anything negative, I'd say I'm a tad meh on the Coronado-style headstock but that's just personal esthetic preference and not really a big deal whatsoever in the grand scheme of things. I might just pull the trigger on getting this one already.

I got mine one week ago and it is a real great bass. The Pickups needed some attention, they were to near to the strings so they sounded distortioned. But after that i‘m really in Love with it and it will be my main bass for live Gigs!

Always liked the Rascals, and the Fender Modern Player ones are a bit crazy $$$ on the used market. Plus - humbuckers are better than the Fender’s lipstick single coils. I’d say this is a winner!

To check balance you really want to check what happens at the forward strap button. If it doesn't dive from there it's well balanced for playing. Every bass I've ever held will dive the way you just checked here. The balance is always forward of the waist.

I own one a Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass TB, which had a widerange humbucker in it until I came to the realization that a Darkstar would be a drop in replacement for it. This bas with two Darkstars would be really really cool

Funny enough, I'm pretty sure the Rascal is a Bass VI body and I want to say a Fender Coronado neck? The Rascal kinda always was meant to be a bastard of parts bass. The original Rascal basically had a strat layout with lipstick pickups and the bridge looked off of a guild lmao. That's about as much as I know rn as the little Fender Encyclopedia that I am

I had a Fender Rascal Bass for a while. I liked its quirkiness. 3 lipstick pups with 7 way combination possible via the switchery. Some great sounds including a very passable Gibson EB3 Andy Fraser tone. It was giggable and I did a few with it. In the end it didn’t really cut it as a stage grade instrument and I sold it as it had become just a wall hanger 🫤

The pup adjustment screws didn't seem to be substantially anchored and the E string kept on adjusting itself heightwise. I'll have a look at this Squire though. I like the lighter / short scale combination

Pretty nice and it looks like you could grab a couple fingers underneath that neck pickup and use it as a tug bar for those so inclined. Both Lobster and myself have noticed that the Mustang bass has a dead sounding E string but this one does not. I've had both the Squier Mustang and a JMJ Mustang and both have dead E strings. If anyone could shed light on that please let me know. I have ruled out a bad setup. Thanks.

Really? I’ve bought four MIC Squiers and never had an issue with fret sprout on any of them. Which is more than I can say for many MIM Fenders I’ve played over the last three years or so. Guess a lot depends on the climate where you live and how they’re stored.

I always thought it was weird to see short scale basses with the bridge smack dab in the middle of the body. I guess there's a certain sound to them, and the distance from fret to fret is reduced, but the REACH to the first fret is the same. I guess it's just another option combination, and the line seems to have been inspired by various "frankensteined" instruments they've seen over the years. I have a Dano 3412 Shorthorn, and the bridge is practically on the back edge of the bass. It's shorter than a few guitars I have! Opposite end of the spectrum for sure.

I've read this detail about 'reach' vs 'distance' before and I'm not quite sure I get it. Are you saying that the placement of the bridge and fretboard make the overall length of the instrument similar to a standard bass, but the spacing between the frets is the same as other short-scales?
