Have One similar, squier p bass special standard from 2000. The jazz Pickup isnt so nice as my squier jazz bass VM but the p Pickup sounds amazing really. In mine has been done some fret leveling and corner sanding and added a gotoh bridge. Tunners are really nice too i think they are very similar if not the same as the fender ones...

I have one of these bad boys! I swapped the stock pickups with a DiMarzio DP126 set and put in a white pick guard (looks cooler IMO) and it holds its own against pretty much any Fender MIM or even some of the Americans I've played.

Actually agathis (kauri) is unfairly maligned. Though locally it's referred to as a pine, that is misleading since the only thing it has in common with North American pines is that it's a conifer. But then so is redwood and other respected tonewoods. Agathis is simply a plentiful wood in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands where a lot of lower-priced instruments are manufactured. It doesn't have a real exciting grain pattern but it's harder than basswood, alder and other commonly used woods and some say it has similar tone to mahogany. You may find agathis instruments that don't sound great, but it's likely not the fault of the wood, but of the cheaper pickups or poor construction practices employed in the places where the wood is plentiful. Find a well put together instrument made of agathis and it should be fine.

So will this bass give me the best of both worlds? I really like geezer butler's tone (he uses a p bass) for fingerstyle and flea's tone (j bass) for slapping.I know it will give me the full Precision tone, but PJ basses only have one jazz pickup, so will it give me the same tone as a regular jazz bass if i just use the bridge pickup?
@xavierarmendariz7155
@xavierarmendariz7155 8 жыл бұрын
It would give you the sound of the Bridge pickup from a Jazz Bass, so, maybe it's not going to have the same sound from RHCP, but don't worry, sounds great for slaps

I really like this review. You say you are not a real bassplayer, but who cares? The way you let us hear all the different sounds with the same short simple pieces of playing is in my opinion the best way to do this. The only thing I missed in the video: Does it have any neckdive? Is the weight well-balanced with such a light body?
@RoyCousins
@RoyCousins 6 жыл бұрын
TheFilthyLiam It's lighter than a Fender Precision, but not by that much. Balance is good (between 17th & 18th fret). The finish on mine (Candy Apple Red) is excellent.
@XpunkishXduckX
@XpunkishXduckX 6 жыл бұрын
I just got one last week and I will say there is some neck dive. Granted, I do have a real slick strap from the store I'm using that probably doesn't help. It's not an problem when I'm playing but if I'm just standing there then it will start to drop.

@domagojoinky8262
@domagojoinky8262 7 жыл бұрын
You can get more tones out of it than from regular p bass. That bridge pickup can give you definition of jazz bass while p pickup gives you meat and thunder. Better buy this over precision or jazz bass.

Paul, the body's not made of soft maple, it's agathis. Soft maple is pretty heavy, and it doesn't have a large, open grain like you have on the body.

You can buy a Warwick, A thoug one! But they have some small tunners that get uout of tune with a little move! I've tried with warwicks and those tunners are not really good! i have a squier Pj is like the older version of the video one and the tunners are strong "The Affordable" They are very very good! Intruments do not have to be Fender or Gibson to be good! ;) Even the Squier Jazz Bass active Deluxe is so much better than some of the Standard Fenders! So go and spend some thousand of dollars on a stock Fender!

I have a Squier VM Precision and love it, except for one persistent problem: terrible hum coming from the jazz bridge pickup. It can be heard even while I'm playing, which is different from typical single-coil hum. I looked this up online to see if anyone had a similar issue but found nothing. I took the bass into my local music shop for them to have a look at but they couldn't figure it out. I even tried dropping in a Seymour Duncan Apollo pickup (which is specifically a hum-cancelling jazz pickup), but this didn't fix it. Now I just make sure to keep the bridge pickup dialed out, which is unfortunate, since having it was a big motivating factor for why I originally bought the bass.

+Shawn Huff Depends on what you upgrade. I haven't played one of these with the Fender pickups, mine has a Duncan Designed (only P, no J), but there nothing really I'd want to mod about it. I got mine second hand with the pots swapped out for CTS ones and it sounds killer. The only mods I made myself are a D-tuner and I got a chickenhead knob for the tone because I use it a lot and I like to see where I have it set.
