AGM- I'll keep it in mind if I ever come to need a big squiggle but as I wrote once or twice before, the pressing frame and dies were made as a tool, a fixture, a one-time apparatus to use as I needed, to build the railing that it was used in. Your Idea of using solid top discs on axles sounds workable but yet simple! The reward is yours (and yours alone) when you've found the right market for "adjustable pitch squiggles. Check with a patent attorney first and good luck to you too!

TBC- I've been 'grazin for 37 years now but that was only because I was a late starter to be dating Mary Jane. In my day, pot was called "the assassin of youth" and it was in '73 that I caught my first buzz. Funny, I do my best thinking when I'm stoned, like I had an eye right there in the middle of my brain that could always see a different and often better approach to my work, the tools, jigs and fixtures that often speed or improve the fabrication. You'll have to get back on the arches!

You can probably work hot rolled steel in the same manner. I used steel collars and cut them in half for the die pieces but you can saw some cold rolled steel disks in half and use them. The collars were about 2-1/4" o.d. x 3/4" wide. Good luck...

I had only 12 pieces to make and had no press break to make them in. I made this quickie press in under 2 hours, pressed out my pieces and threw the frame out when I finished the job. I have a video called "the railing", the pieces were made for that project and if you view that video, you will see where these squiggly pieces were used. The vertical tubes are 14 ga. steel tubing, they do not warp, they stretch. The horizontal "dies" are 14 ga.with 5/8" solid hot rolled sides welded on. thanks!

It was a 5 ton bottle jack, about $30.00 at Pep Boys. The Aluminum bar was 1/2" x 1/2", and was 4042 aluminum alloy/ T3 hardness.
@LongIslandEddie
@LongIslandEddie 15 жыл бұрын
The die pieces which form the aluminum bar (1/2" sq. 6063-T65), were cut from steel collars. The collars were sintered, pressed into a dense mold as shaft collars, 1-1/2" I.D. I sawed them in half at the set-screw line and welded them to some 5/8" x 1-1/2" steel bar stock. I almost regret sending this jig off to the scrap yard but with the knowledge that I can always make another one (if I ever need it), I'll be content with the 60,000 hits that this fractured video has gotten! Thanks Keone-

if you use a jack with a rotary motion handle, then you can easily use a cordless drill to raise and lower the jack, then it will become much much faster

The jack is a one ton (1) bottle jack that was about $25.00 at Pep Boyz. The pressing die was used for a one time application from 1-1/2" x 3/4" x 14 ga. steel tubing. I don't think that the die would've worked with any other metal but aluminum. If you look at my video of "the railing", you will see the application of these squiggly pieces.

Bula507- These were custom pieces, only about 25 needed. This bender is not for production work, it was destroyed after the project was finished, there was no "money earned" for each piece, the bending press was the best way to be able to make each piece the same and uniformity was more important than production time for each piece. If an artist is commissioned to paint a portrait, it's never about how fast he pants but more of a thing of how well he paints. The bender worked well for me.

The most exciting part of this video is probably the unleashing of stored energy shown at 0:40 seconds, as the valve on the jack is opened,you can see the press, spring back into a relaxed state with the release of the stored potential energy within the material "memory" of the tubular steel frame. What's YOUR favorite part?

I never got too friendly with the Aluminum MIG gun but have been certified for High Frequency TIG welding of aluminum as well as Stainless and Titanium. Bench welding is a dying art these days but I still enjoy spending a few hours on my Miller SynchroWave from time to time. The real problem is that we don't do too much manufacturing anymore here in America, our political leaders have sent all of the jobs overseas and now we go to WalMart and buy the shit back! What a world!

@junekentucky Great thought, but the depth of the bend was controlled by "bottoming-out' the pice being bent, when the Aluminum part made contact with the steel press-bars, that was the best gage of all If you noticed, I flipped the part and bent it in an opposite direction. Soft Aluminum hasn't got too much 'memory', the property that wants the material to return to it's original shape, with soft metal, you get what you see, I can understand your thought, but I wasn't concerned with tolerance.

The metal is soft (as far as metal goes) its Aluminum, 1/2" square rods. Because i had multiple pieces to make, I needed uniformity as well as controlled bends so making this little press frame gave me exactly what I needed without alot of time spent making a bending jig or a template. Just 2 weeks ago, I sent the jig to the scrap yard along with a mess of other dropoffs and scraps. Unless there'll be another job like the railing, I won't be using it again, it was one of a kind! luv- Ed

Sometimes it's unavoidable having to build a jig (tool) that will only be needed one time. I would've loved to have been able to use this tool, time after time but the project that it was used for was an exclusive project that was only done once and when a sculptor creates a "one of a kind" piece, he usually destroys the patterns, thus assuring the one who commissioned the work, that there would be no other "knock-off" pieces to reduce the value of the original creation. Thanks for viewing it!

where do I find one of these amazing squiggle makers?
@LongIslandEddie
@LongIslandEddie 10 жыл бұрын
It is not an item which can be bought or found on the market, it is a special tool that I made in order to accomplish the bending of the aluminum bars that were used on a project. The 'squigglemaker was a 'one of a kind' tool, and when I completed the project, I scrapped the press but saved the bottle jack. Often, special tools are made, used, and shelved, never to be needed again. It's all part of the challenge that comes with the job at hand, and the best tool of all, is the human mind as it rises up to meet that challenge!

CB15- yes, I designed and built this Jig in about 4 hours. Above, there is a response video which shows the application of the formed aluminum pieces which I needed to bend. The "machine" was built from scrap steel that was fished out of the scrap barrel back in the metal shop. the welding was standard MIG welding but I can't see how you can possibly see the beads with the resolution of this video. Thank you for commenting and viewing the video, take a look at the video above of the railing.

I'm ready! Throw me your biggest challenge although I'm not too sure about what you mean by "double arch". Tell me the radius of the circle, tell me the wall thickness of your tubing and perhaps I can help you. 1.5" tubing is not suited for short radiuses, there will be noticable distortion if the radius is too tight. You are dealing with (I think), an 18-20 radius and unless you are making the gate 36" wide, less than 180 could not be done. Give me some more info and I'll work it out for you!

Sorry, this video often stumbles those who do not know what metalforming is about. Aluminum is a metal, silverish in color, has a fairly low melting point, is malleable, ductile and contains no iron.(non-ferrous) As to your monthly, there are several nice videos here on KZbin, on inserting tampons, check it out!

The pressing frame was originally made of 14 gauge steel tubing (.080) but certain pieces began to fatigue when I first loaded up the die. The main horizontal tube began to bow as the pressure became greater so I used some 5/8" solid h.r. sideplated on both the top and the bottom dies. If you watch the video closely, you'll see the energy release at the 39th second of the video and because the press jig was only clamped onto the work bench, the bottom beam bent slightly upward at the rail ends!

moto- I don't believe that you would be successful at bending steel pipe without deforming the material, at least not be able to keep the cosmetic appeal of the uniform diameter of the pipe. If one was to attempt to build a pressing die like this for round pipe, they certainly would need to use concave "spool" dies at the top and bottom sides. That wouldn't solve the problem but it would surely enhance the appearance of the bends making it look more curvy... Thanks for coming by!

@mictlantecuhtl1 Sorry, this is all that I know, I ripped the music from Limewire and some other poster pointed this information out to me- Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre', and Vangelis are all 3 individual entities that produce modern electronic music. Vangelis did the music for Chariots of Fire. I think Tangerine Dream did the music for Blade Runner. Jean Michel Jarre' is a French composer/musician who's father, Maurice Jarre', was a famous orchestra director.

AT- O.K., then answer me this- Why would anyone want to make their own skateboard if they can go to the store and buy one? If I made a commercial press, I gotta believe that the press alone would have to cost far more than a skateboard, yes? I would think that by the time a guy buys the press and the raw materials to make a board, he could probably buy a few of them for even less than what it would take to make one, so what am I missing? Where's the money part coming in, the boards or presses?

The press was made of steel. I used 5/8" x 1-1/2" hot-rolled steel bars for the horizontals and 1" square tubing x 3/16" wall for the verticals. I used steel shaft collars cut in half for the dies, and formed those curves from 1/2" sq. aluminum bars, they were part of an architectural railing. the mackine was 18" wide by 20" high. After pressing out about a dozen bars, I sent it to the scrap yard, I didn't need it anymore.

Once the press is made ($400.00 or so) material (300.00 ongoing) you can sell decks for around 50.00+ ea. With a good press you can make around 10 decks at a time. Do the math
