Question: As a health care provider, what can I do to reduce the abelism in the health care field? I think many hospitals and health care providers have an abelist point of view that interferes with patients having the best experience with doctors
@baileypeabody14682 жыл бұрын
I have many disabilities so from my experience clear masks masks make it hard to lip read and also harder to understand body language. People tend to listen and talk to the people I’m with more than me and I really want to feel like it’s my decision and my voice they want to hear. Having rooms that are easier for wheelchairs so it’s not super crowded or super hard to get in/out. A lot of it is really communication I have medical ptsd as well as from other things so just being kind and patient and willing to explain things in a way that’s understood and really listing to concerns I’m sure will take you far thank you for trying to make health care more accessible.
@danarzechula37692 жыл бұрын
I wish more doctors would ask this. In essence the answer is treat people with disabilities as people first. See them as real people!! And advocate please for wheelchair accessible designs in hospital and doctor settings.

Grub bag question (well, more of a request, actually....). Shane, could you please share what your school experience was like growing up? Were you in an inclusive classroom environment? Did you have a classroom paraeducator? How did your teachers accommodate your disability? What types of extracurricular activities were you involved in outside of school? Thanks!!

11:36 Yay you answered my question! Thank you! I figured you might not as some people were getting negative in the responses, but you did and I'm so happy. Very fun to hear that you do learn the names/thumbnails of some people and have conversations about it, I always thought I would in your shoes but I've never been there so it's interesting to hear your perspective on it. I definitely talk to people in my life about the channels that I regularly watch, and to know that it happens on the other side too is fun because it makes it more of a community and a two-way street :) Thank you for answering my question, and for this series. Q&A were really popular back in the day and I personally enjoy them so it's fun to see a revival, and I think it fits your channel and the work you do especially well so it's a great choice I think.

That's so interesting how Shane speaks about his past internalised ableism. It made me think of having a lot of internalised misogyny growing up, such as the 'I'm not like other girls' trope (as Shane said he wanted to be.. Not like 'other disabled people.') I would criticise myself and other women constantly. When you realise it's the deep (learned!) insecurities within you that are causing it, its a revelation. When you can eventually choose compassion, to connect with yourself again and others like you. Contributing to positive change > contributing to the problem. I love the honesty, thanks for that 🙌

The love you two share is sooo sweet! Thank you for sharing your life. It's nice to have people who understand that true love is precious. You are a cross between adorable and dorky . . . adorkable. I'm with you Shane on the UFO's and gov't. I too use a wheelchair and I appreciated the part about not wearing shoes, I am one of those people. I can walk, but I have Erythromelalgia (EM - man on fire) which makes my feet feel like they have been walking on hot coals, it is especially painful if I wear shoes or socks. I've not owned socks for 20 years and I have a pair of shoes that are covered in this dust under the bed, just in case the EM miraculously goes away.

I love the way you two interact together. You can tell that you are best friends. People that think you are fake must really be shallow. To think that people are so incapable of believing that disabled people can give and get love like anyone else, it’s just sad. I’m glad you are using your voice to stop this narrative. Before my mom just passed. I made it as fun as possible going out many times a week before covid . When my mom transitioned to a walker then chair I immediately noticed how hard it was to find where the ramp areas were for basic side walks at our local grocery stores and outside shops. Never realized it untill basic mobility could not involve a small step. Would really enjoy more ongoing updates and awareness in having things more accessible and what you are doing. Also what others could do to have changes made. I think it's a big area being missed that would be of great service

As there was a question about ableism, I remembered the first time I watched a video of yours and thinking that Shane was mentally disabled just because he was in a wheelchair which seems like such a dumb thing to think! Of course after three minutes of watching your video I realized how wrong I was but that’s just a sad thing in general, this embedded ableism or the lack of reflecting on my thoughts on disability. Luckily this was one year ago and since then your videos changed my perspective on disability massively which makes me very happy! One of the first things I learned from you was to remember for example talking to the person in the wheelchair themselves and not to the accompanying person, which seems like such a obvious thing now for me to do… but yeah, society taught us otherwise and I really hope that many other people will find your channel and change their minds… it’s about damn time! Anyways, thanks for the entertaining video (as always). Lots of love from Germany

Shane, I totally get what you’re saying. I have been disabled from birth, but lived a “normal” life, not interacting with other disabled people until I started playing wheelchair basketball in high school. I, for some reason, was a little uncomfortable around them despite being in a wheelchair myself. It was like I disassociated myself from other disabled people.

OMG! I love this! When my son was in school, I always made sure that he kept up with the "fashion" that his peers were wearing. I made him suffer through hair styling (okay, like all kids get to do, my son didn't get to miss that "just because he has a disability"!), and fancy expensive athletic shoes (we live in SF Bay Area, Silicone Valley to be more specific, and fashion isn't cheap here either) over his knee high orthotics. By the time he was in high school, he was just so into comfort, it literally took his one-to-one aide to ask me why I didn't let him wear pants with elastic waste that would be easier for changing him and allow his stomach to not be so confined. Before his fusion, he had scoliosis and it never occurred to me that he would be more comfortable, like medically comfortable, in something else. Now, he's 34 and is 100% about comfort, could care less about what society thinks of it, and unless we're going to something special, his uniform of the day is sweats, or crazy leggings, t-shirts, and slip on shoes (winter is Uggs all the way). It's all about balance I guess.

Questions for next Monday Grub-bag: How have you made your new wheelchair more comfortable and usable? I was under the impression you would have to go to many expensive fitting appointments to make it work better for you but that hasn't been mentioned. Obviously things happen in your life that you don't talk about on the internet and that's totally understandable, so if this is one of those things, that's fine. Just curious what changes you made to make it work better? And I know being able to reach your joystick was important to you- is that something you're able to do in this new wheelchair like you had hoped? If not, what adjustments could you make to make it work?

Question for Shane: I'm disabled and I personally still struggle with the feeling of being a burden. And in one of your videos you mentioned that you managed to overcome/ get rid of this feeling. So my question is: How did you get there? Do you have any tips or advice? Love from Germany and happy belated birthday!

Not Shane, but I am disabled. My main mindset is that if people saw me as a burden, they wouldn't be so willing to hang out with me or help me with whatever task. The people that do see me as a burden aren't worth my time.

Question: (bonus fun question in post script) Hi, I’m autistic and sometimes nonverbal and often my differences are disabling when it comes to certain tasks and environments. My partner has adhd, but has medication (thankfully), which helps them be productive. We have come really far in terms of how we divide up responsibility, since we’ve been together nearly ten years. However I struggle with intense guilt and shame and anger at myself and my neurology because of how it limits me from contributing. I know I’m doing all I can (and sometimes too much x resulting in meltdowns/shutdowns) and my partner is completely supportive of me doing what I can and insists I do enough, more than I need to. I just can’t take it in. How do you deal with frustration and or emotions/self talk when you just simply cannot do things that the world expects of you? Especially in a relationship (though also in public) Bonus question: if you had to wear seasonal clothes for a particular holiday for an entire year, which would you pick? (This includes on the other holidays!)

You are both hilarious (but I can appreciate Hannah's excitement over the turtle). I saw a bear the other day and wanted to get pictures of it when I was brought back to the reality of potential death. Love your video's.
