After making a bushcraft hunting camp in the woods, we are waking up to go squirrel hunting using my vintage lever action .22 rifle. We have built up a nice camp fire to clean and cook our squirrel at our backwoods bush camp.

There needs to be more kids boys and girls in this sport.well i call it sport but my feelings is life management. There needs to be wildlife strategy and survivalists classes in school everyday. Were kids can learn all this and become pro hunters or game wardens.or just someone works at hard job and loves come learn and feed his family.

@@jessiecasteel2902 you're right on all fronts. Definitely need our next generation to learn how to manage the future of wildlife. Also, it's a sport and as well as life. No other sport like hunting, fishing, outdoor living is more educational as it is fun.

What me and my family do when we eat squirrel, we fry the legs and cook them in gravy. We take the entire skinned head and deep fry it. You then take the prong of a fork and stick it through both eye sockets and pop off the cranium and eat the brain. It tastes and has the consistency of refried beans. The Dura Matter holds everything together so it pops out like a little grape. If you can muster up the courage, it is the best part of the squirrel hands down. You can also eat the tongue but it is tough like a chicken gizzard. Not only is it healthy, it's also a great way to maximize the harvest from an animal with so little parts.

Pro tip: squirrels toughness usually depends on the squirrels age. Even young fox squirrel are tender. Also the best part if the squirrel is the back is the best part (“dad’s piece” in my household lol) with the inner and outer loins!

Always cleaned squirrels and rabbits the same way. Make a cut in the back, pull it like you did, then cut off the feet, tail and head when the skin got to the end. Never did anything around the feet before pulling the skin.

When I was a teenager and early 20's, me and my friend's would get a few squirrel's and we would be camping so we had seasoning and cut up an onion, then wrap it up in tin foil, and throw it in the 🚒 fire! Works awesome 👍! Love the videos.

I really enjoyed this. I forgot about this rifle. A memory from childhood. A friend or cousin had one of these Ithaca rifles. Squirrel is amazing. We use to fry up with biscuits and gravy just like cottontail. Let it simmer after crisping it. Just like you would pan fry a Chicken. Or we would stew it with one or two cream soups with onion, carrots and potatoes. Thanks for these. God bless all here.

I love those old Ithaca 54 rifles. I prefer the 54r, which was the one that started the craze for lever action 22lr rifles. My channel has videos for how to completely tear down and reassemble the 54r. It's a great little rifle that's fun to shoot. For bushcrafting, your single shot is a better option, because there's fewer things to go wrong. Plus, it's just fun to hunt with.

Good thing to carry when “bushcraft” camping and eating off the land I find is broth cubes, or broth paste. Helps a whole bunch with small game. Just boil the snot out of them, throw some rice or other grains in, got a nice meal, decently tender meat. I for one like squirrel a lot, but I rarely ever cook them quick other than buttermilk and frying up. Prefer to stew them, pressure cook them, make them into squirrel and dumplings (a personal favorite). Squirrel meat is delicious! Lots of ways to make it tasty and tender enough.

When we have a bunch we double wrap them in aluminum foil and put half a stick of butter with herbs in the cavity and on the grill they go. Enjoy that rifle while your young! There will come a time when you can focus on the sights or focus on the target but not both at the same time! Lol. I used to use a Rossi pump gallery breakdown, head shots all day long. Now it’s body shots or a 20 gauge! 👍

Good to see you used the two rocks to set your cooking grate on. You should consider adding some leather gloves to your field cook set so if you have to move the cooking grate or shifting other hot items you don't chance getting burned. I love the older 22 rifles. I was at a gun shop a while back and I was looking at a classic 22 and my brother looked at the salesman and said "He collects those" . I did not get that rifle that day because the price was then elevated. Keep up the great job you do. Stay healthy, stay safe and keep living your dreams.
