We buy a couple of pumpkins each year for the squirrels. Sometimes we have to give them a head start by cutting a small hole. . Love it when they get their whole body inside leaving just their tail flipping outside. Thank you for sharing.

But** what SHOULD bother everyone is the particular variety of pumpkin he used here. This is not the standard variety, it's a slightly different pumpkin strain that looks 99.9% identical. Yes but as you see at 2:50 ( mouth part) there is some little scratches for the mouth it could've been even smaller scratches for the rest (eyes and nose)so that would be the weak spot were the squirrel would have preferred to make holes to try and get the food

Having had squirrels make a meal out of my uncarved & carved pumpkins over the years, yet not w/ such awesome results, I'd say try to start putting out food they lie to attract them. Wild bird seed w/ lots of sunflower seeds, corn & peanuts is a great way to start. After they get used to your offerings, place a pumpkin with slight cuts to puncture the skin where you'd like them to nibble. All sorts of critters like to eat pumpkin flesh & the seeds but I think the trick is making cuts in the skin to make the smell stronger will help. It's fun to feed them but be sure to keep doing so until they go "hibernate" through the Winter, as they will come to rely on you for food, instead of through natural sources. Good luck!

Madison Costeira Squirrels & chippy-chippy-chipmunks ate the pumpkins I have on my porch! I didn't even cut them. :( O well, at least the chippy-chippy-chipmunks made a small hole in my "Long Island Cheese" pumpkin I guess to eat & make a guest house & no one bothered with my "Lakota Blue" but chowed on the sugar pumpkins & 2 Connecticut Field pumpkins. I am going to cut 2 small slats in a Connecticut Field pumpkin & fill it with peanuts, sunflower seeds & flax so they leave the rest alone for Halloween. Did you try cutting a pumkin to entice some critters yet?

I have about 7 to 20 squirrels that visit me daily. 5 of them trust me enough to sit on my lap and eat peanuts (not all at once). I even have a chipmunk that comes and sits with me. I am really looking forward to trying this -- I think to have the squirrels carve the pumpkin will allow for a truly scary looking jack-o-lantern. I wish richardmangan would share his secret with me because it would truly bring me so much joy just to try this with my squirrel friends! I also plan to get two more pumpkins and carve an opening so all of the wildlife can go inside to find walnuts, pecans, peanuts, sunflower seeds, fruit, veggies, and even a few sweets (natures sweets). I get a kick out of watching them, and I know the birds will too!
