both versions were written by Mitch Allen, singer for SR-71, hes buddies with Bowling for soup & updated the song for them. Mitch is also a producer & has written songs for many groups & singers, as well as, produced on many albums.

Ive spoken with Jaret Reddick of BFS about this. This song was originally a SR-71 song. Jarret was friends with the vocalist of SR-71 and he told Jarret this sounds more like a BFS song, so he gave them the song to make it their own. Jaret said that he did not want the "The rubber broke" line in it and so they changed up the song and made it their own. technically BFS didnt cover it as SR-71 gave them the rights to use it and record it and have it as their song

Nah sr-71 just rode trends. Their second album hilariously tried to sound like Linkin Park, then when that didn’t work they went to this sound. Mitch is a decent pop song composer, it’s why he currently writes a lot of Disney starlets’ songs, but SR-71 was never a good band.

The lyrics are deeper here; it is obviously about a woman who wishes it was still 1985 because it was before she had kids and she wishes she could have it all back, but she can't. BFS made it more about being nostalgic for the older times. Lyrics - I like this better. Melody wise - BFS did it better.

Just keep in mind Bowling For Soup’s version isn’t considered a cover by either side, they consider it the official version. This version was released the same year in Japan, but they both agree that it basically may as well have not been released at all because of how small of a market it was. No different from any artist writing songs for any other artist, not a cover.

Same. The original lyrics aren't just a list of pop culture references; they actually paint a picture of an aging woman going through a midlife crisis and reflecting on the long-gone things of her youth.

The lead singer of bowling for soup was lucky to have this guy as a friend cause idk about you but I remember this being the only song I knew from bowling for soup for a long time, arguable one of the songs that made them mainstream.

The one line they should have kept was “she’s seen all the classics, breakfast club pretty in pink fast times at ridgemont high” it’s such a tighter rhyme than “…even St. Elmo’s fire”

I think I prefer this version overall. Maybe it's just burnout after hearing the cover so much, but there's something about the vocals and music in this version that I really like. One thing I can definitively say is better in this version is the lyrics. They tell more of the protagonist's story, whereas the cover seems to focus more on just referencing 80s pop culture. A lot of the lyrics in this version fit the rhythm and rhyme better than their cover counterparts (eg. "Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink/Fast Times at Ridgemont High" vs. "Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink/Even St. Elmo's Fire").

I spoke to Jaret on my show yesterday, which will be coming out on Saturday! Anyway, Jaret said this was more of a collab track and not a cover, it was sent to both SR71 and BFS who both did their own versions of the track. He explains it better on the episode so subscribe and watch it to find out the proper answer! 🤟 🤟

Thoughts on the two songs, because I just found out about this version. BFS has the better bassline. One of my favorite parts of the songs. SR71 dominates with their second verse lyrics, they just make more sense. BFS has the better outro. Not a fan of how repetitive SR71 was with it.
