Guys, I just came across your channel and I have to say I'm loving it! I am also in Toronto so It's great to see some locals building, may I say, at the highest, cleanest and the most professional level. I vote for an SR short block which will be reliable with some supporting mods and give you the least amount of headache. A bit boring yes but It's an engine us mortals can access so we can relate a bit better. Keep up the good work guys! Cheers!

1jz would be so awesome. i dont know why everyone suggests going 2jz. unless you plan to make more than 5-600hp whats the point of buying an engine that cost close to twice as much when the 1j can handle 500hp all day. i hope you go 1jz in the future in at least some sort of rwd car on speed academy. these videos you guys put out are of the utmost quality and you guys deserve so much more sponsor support and subscribers. cheers for bringing us all awesome content.

It's good to hear you're sticking with the SR. Was going to comment that a 1J would add mass over the front strut towers and add a little understeer. And with you doing an ls swap into a 240 before I'd go that route if you want to keep it "grip". That is if it can keep most of the weight toward the center of the car which you would know from your previous experience. Much luck with the build!

You should really consider the swap option. 1JZ are great engines: they have a lot of potential still remaining plenty reliable. It is definitely going to cost you a bit more but it would really make the difference. Anyway, I must congratulate you for the channel. Greetings from Italy!

I was in a similar situation. I bought a used SR that was supposed to be fine but when I pulled the head to start to refresh the motor, I found bad damage to the cylinder wall between 1 and 2. The top 1/4" of the wall was actually broken off. Really bad. I had no come back with the seller. (no I couldn't do a compression test, the engine was on a stand) So I could either buy another used SR or I could resurrect the one I had. I sent the block off to be sleeved and have new pistons installed. That work is still being done. I also need to get the head into a shop to see if its ok. So, I don't think your SR is junk necessarily. You could buy another engine or do what I'm doing and make a bullet proof bottom end. It ended up being cheaper for me to go that route and I'll hopefully never think about the bottom end again.
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын

as long as the piston seal and the rods aren't bend your bottom end is okay. you should give the top of the piston a fine polish to knock off the high spot. the same goes for the combustion chamber as long ass your valves seal. you should check for warpage . i work as an engine builder and i have build a 6 cyl 2.5L bmw race engine with about 800hp that still runs now almost a year after it was done this way and that was necessary to weld the chamber to get it to seal
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+simon norup I agree, I think I could run the pistons as is if I wanted but the head has material missing around the valve so there's no way to fix it without welding, something I dont want to do.

Yep, I was going to start commenting about how this was going to be more than just a headgasket swap but I figure I would wait until the end. Lol. I wouldnt consider the block a paperweight though, with enough time and money it could be turned into a bored monster, the head could be ported polished and cc opened up along with bigger valves etc. but like I said. "Time and money" Its easier to go with another SR. I would also like to mention that usually the O2 sensors get screwed up when headgaskets blow. Something with the burned coolant that throws them off. So I would check on those or if your running a Bosch wideband maybe just replace it. Sweet setup though when finished. And more boost????? Lol!

+Speed Academy sounds like a steal! Did u ever figure out the detonation problem? Octane? Too much boost? Running lean? @speedacademy get an SR20VE and swap it with a DE 8 weight crank and make crazy HP Numbers for displacement size.

+asquaredtheking Sounds complicated and expensive haha. Maybe in the future but I need a simple fix at the moment.
@asquaredtheking9 жыл бұрын
+Speed Academy good thought but just remember with a VE neo vvl engine people make 220+ NA power just imagine on boost. thanks for the reply love your channel!

have it machined?
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+PhoenixBHO The block yes but the head would need to be repaired. $$$
@CarsnStuff9 жыл бұрын
Forsure go with ARP head studs.. When i went single turbo i added a 3 layer steel head gasket and that thing handles all the boost and torture i want it to. Personally i actually torque my arp studs to 90 ft-lbs even though it was recommended by arp to do 80. Personally im glad i did it the way i did.
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+Review Guy Thanks for the advice, I also heard going to 90 isn't a bad idea.
@CarsnStuff9 жыл бұрын
Yeah i mean i can only speak for my experience. I personally have had good success with what i've done. Im sure there are other people who have done things completely opposite with same results. but as long as it works for you thats what matters.
@alloutofbubblegum81659 жыл бұрын
it's a good idea to have a little bit of paranoia in regards to timing chains. but also that a bummer about your engine turning out to be junk now. i will be looking forward to seeing the next episode.

+Speed Academy Yeh i guess thats a big turn off :p what about an sr20ve-t?
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+Dhruv Luhar That's also a very expensive head and modifications to build a VE. Im sticking with the simple SR for now. :)

It might be the water/meth system as they have been linked to detonation in some cylinders do to the mixture not reaching them.
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+Sanju George The mixture should be fine but Im going to double check the meth system when I get the car back up and running.

Check a/f after rebuild if u weren't logging. Det could have caused gasket to blow. Would hate to see rebuilt head pop too.
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+DisplayName I was watching it while ripping on the track and it was in the low 11s so I wasnt running lean. Besides, I have AF protection set up in the EMS. If it runs lean it will pull timing and boost.

+Speed Academy The VQ35DE can be another idea for a swap, or turn the SR20DET in a SR20VET. Anyway i will enjoy seeing the process :D
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+Alex S S I like the VQ but its too tall of an engine. Have to cut the hood to make it fit so I don't like that at all.
@itzzToon9 жыл бұрын
all that work Pete. All that work, just to have it poo in your coffee. you cant have the block honed and the head machined and ported to fix this issue?
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+itsToon That's racing for ya! I could have the block honed, replace the pistons, etc. but the cost of all that will be double of what I will spend buying a used SR engine.

sr20 Pete! maybe bore it out to a 2.2 liter! I'm shocked that you are still running a clutch fan and not an electric setup considering how long you have owned the car.
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+Kevin Parra If you go search around the forums the stock clutch fan is actually the best solution for cooling. It outperforms anything aftermarket. I have a set of SPAL fans sitting on the self but havent installed them because all the road racers recommend keeping the clutch fan.
@imSchwaggy9 жыл бұрын
when you get the new one are you gonna bore it? (stroker) whatever its called lol.
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+im Schwaggy The cost isn't worth it. Way too much expense for the small bump in mid-range. It'd be cheaper to just get a 1J swap.
@imSchwaggy9 жыл бұрын
+h0rr0r100 yeah i know. i wanted to know why they didn't do that instead of a swap. but he said it would be expensive.
@goughgreer-barry17739 жыл бұрын

@MC17969 жыл бұрын
Coolest swap would be a Nissan VK56DE. They use this V8 platform in motorsports in the Australia Supercars series and Nissan put it in the GTR GT-1.
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+MC1796 Agreed but the cost and swap work is just too much for me right now.
@MC17969 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it is a pricey one. Have you ever thought about putting a VET head on the new engine and/or stroking it if the pistons are shot?
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+MC1796 VET head is a lot of work to mate it to the SR block and I just dont have the time and funds for that either. Same thing in terms of stroking the engine, the cost is not worth it for me.
@MC17969 жыл бұрын
+Speed Academy Yeah it is a lot of work just for VVT, cutting back the firewall is a pain as well. Well, I'm out of ideas haha. Ask Tomei if they'll give you a SR genesis motor for free, you know, for long term product testing...
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+MC1796 Haha, you know what's funny. I have good connections of Tomei and thought about it but then said it's still going to take too long to get an engine so I'm sticking with the junkyard SR lol.

I prefer a full regrind on the head and deck the block before changing the gasket. Usually means you don't have to do it twice. :D
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+Veselin Georgiev Exactly, hence why it just makes sense for me to find a used SR that I can swap out the gasket and not have to deal with decking and fixing this engine.
@brandoGTR489 жыл бұрын
Why not go KA-T?
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+brandoGTR48 That would be going backwards for me. I pulled the KA to put the SR.
@1dickycat9 жыл бұрын
Why not just rebuild the block you have? I mean, it didn't look like the block was all that bad, just the pistons and a lil on the head. Personally, I would just take the block to your machine shop and have them spec it out and magnaflux it to double check for cracks. Then id get the head ported and polished with new valvetrain. The P&P should take that roughness in the combustion chamber down and in turn, your head will flow much better. Just my $0.02..... Whatever you guys decide to do, please hurry! Cant wait for the next video! Makes my day when I come home from work and see a new SA vid!
@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+1dickycat Cost. It will easily double the cost to rebuild the engine versus go buy a stock used one. Plus the time and effort it takes to build it will mean less time for other projects that I need to start working on!
@1dickycat9 жыл бұрын
Ok, In that sense i can understand.

@speedacademy9 жыл бұрын
+Chase Diaz I've blown up a few motors in my time and trying to chase the cause often leads to a few unknowns which right now I really don't have time for. I want to just get a working engine back in the car and running so I can focus on a few other projects.

@weskopr9 жыл бұрын
+Diogo DaCunha 1j's are pretty heavy, and for the power target i don't think it is viable to do a complete engine swap involving fabricating, electronics and gearbox and clutch magic. SR20's are good motors and a replacement should pop in in a day ;)
