It's just a way better design for transportation, keeping the packaging way smaller than what Shimano had before. Spindle, crank arm and chainring created a large 3d structure with a weird shape. This packs nicely into a box that's ⅓ the size. (Also saves space in a parts bin or store shelf)

At least they ain't coming off on their own. I broke both scqare tapper and ht2 bottom bracket/crank arm by not tighthening it enough. Right side tighthens itself and left comes loose over time.

You have to put lock tight on the crank bolt threads and grease (a thin film) on the square taper.

They are similar but, XTR Preload adjuster is on the left crank while the axle is still on the drive side,

I think it's just a back and forth downplay from both brands. Sram released an entry-level brakes that use mineral oil to make it look like DOT is superior, then this non drive side spindle response from Shimano, and so on.

@@cabreraman6969 I have seen people not use the preload correctly or not put it on at all the crank and then do not properly torque the pinch bolts and they come loose or break

@@pu1869 well incorrect assembly is not the fault of the crank but the person who didn't read the very straightforward instructions. Besides the single bolt tapered axle design is also prone to incorrect assembly as it needs to be torqued all the way to high hell and of you accidentally leave the preload ring screwed out when you torque the main bolt you would crush it or your bearings and the crank would still be loose. Also the pinch bolt design does not need to be extracted. And lastly the pinch bolt design is structurally superior so you can make a stiffer and stronger crank that is also lighter. A while back I did some basic FEM analysis on the single bolt design and the crank had a tendency to want to slide outwards which would place a large radial load on the axle and a large axial sheer load on the bolt. Of course some very fine tuning of the splines taper and bolt design and torque largely fixes these issues but you have to be more precise with the torque or design it with a higher safety factor which comes at the expense of more weight

Shimano had a pre-load adjuster LONG ago. I do not think you know much about the history of bicycles. Shimano made a cheap, low-end crankset-- something SRAM knows all too well. And a captive crank arm bolt was around in the early 90's. SRAM is rubbish. Cheap and light, works well enough, but there you have it. They do have the best warranty in the business because it is needed. 1X road systems are worthy of ridicule. 1X, for those who are unaware, has NOTHING to do with 'limiting complexity' or 'reducing weight' for the rider. It does two things for the manufacturers: it let's them save money AND it allows full sus mountain bikes to have 4 or 6 or 8 pivots in a fancy linkage without having to place a front mech over the chainwheels. It does have an impact on the rider though: It makes for huge, multi-tooth jumps up and down the cog-- terrible for your tiny, fractional horsepower motor, and it wears chains wrapping a 10 tooth gear and forcing terrible chainlines. And I have ONE Dura-Ace bike and 4 Record bikes. I am no Shimano fanboy.

@@LoveMTB as someone who just has a single 2-24nm torque wrench this is a dealbreaker, I've stripped a gxp crank before because I went ooga duga on the torque

Well Shimano has finally sees that their previous design is not perfect, so they are changing it. I hope they will finally put industrial bearing in hubs and pedals.

Since Sram came to the market Shimano lags a bit behind, they pretty much trying to catch up now, nothing comes close to Sram Eagle or transmission😂

Nah shimano still superior than sram imo. Used eagle xo, xt is smoother and better on the shifting. Sram is just hyping but products still has ups and downs like shimano
