If the nitric doesn’t dissolve the gold but does the base metals. How does the acid access the base metals?
@sreetips
@sreetips 3 жыл бұрын
With the gold contend reduced by inquartation, the nitric can then penetrate to the core of each piece, forming a honeycomb structure as is goes, to successfully remove all the silver and base metals. The process is so effective that the gold is very near three nines after the nitric boils. But the only way to be sure is to refine it with aqua regia.

"Warranted 14K" usually means solid gold on an old pocket watch case, unless accompanied with a year guarantee designation (e.g.,10,20,25 years). Always good to acid test those. Of course, since you are scrapping the metal, it makes little difference, although it will give a misleading higher percentage result when you do the math, because you have the solid gold in there.

@@sreetips Ancient technique, but still used today, especially for fire assays. Dan Hurd and MBMMLLC both have good videos showing the process if you just want to see what's involved. Basically, it uses lead and a selectively-absorbent melting dish to part out the base metals, leaving gold, silver, and PGMs consolidated in a bead. All of the waste produced is in the form of a dry solid "litharge cake", and it eliminates the need for such a massive amount of nitric acid for dealing with the base metals. Certainly can't fault anyone for just sticking to what they know works, though, and you are (at least from what I can tell) the most experienced and knowledgeable refiner on KZbin. Just throwing it out there for consideration in case you were feeling adventurous. :)

Then rip it in dilute nitric and Black powder was all that remained… I then dissolved it in AR. Saves the roasting/cleaning step. I’ve seen boiling nitric put small amounts of gold in solution. In that sense I guess the answer would be yes.

I enjoy the length and details! ;) Would it be reasonable to melt down all this stuff into shot? Just like inquarted gold? And dissolve that? It seems like it would save significant time and effort cleaning.

And I'm no chemist but I'm guessing the deposit is lead chloride?
@sreetips
@sreetips 3 жыл бұрын
As the metal heated, the lead would melt, flow over the entire piece and create a thin coating of lead solder that’s nearly impossible to remove. Leads not so bad. Easily removed with a little sulfuric acid. But most soft solder contains tin. Tin reacts with nitric acid to form metastatic acid or tin paste. Tin paste is the consistency of Elmers Glue. It will ruin a refiners day because it clogs the filter and makes filtering nearly impossible. Boiling in HCl then scraping off the solder is the easier softer way.

Again, why don’t you use aqua regia to dissolve the gold on the surface ?
@sreetips
@sreetips 2 жыл бұрын
Because it won’t work. It will tend to dissolve the base metals first, leave gold undissolved and create a big toxic mess.

How much should I pay for gold filled pocket watch cases I don't want to put myself in a hole
@sreetips
@sreetips 3 жыл бұрын
Those case yield between 3% and 3.5% sometimes more. But if you’re talking recovering the gold, then selling it for more dollars - forget it. But, if you’re talking converting your failing paper dollars into highly valuable gold, then you can’t lose.

@38:57 you say that you have nanoparticles of metallic gold? I was not aware that there was another type of gold that was not metallic... hmmmmm
@sreetips
@sreetips 3 жыл бұрын
Nano particles of gold are just a few microns. They are so small that the gold will suspend in the liquid, giving off vibrant colors from pink through blue and purple. Quite beautiful to look at. But a pain for the refiner. They pass right through a filter paper.

If you dissolve gold in acid then it is no longer in metallic form. It becomes a compound of gold called gold chloride or chloroauric acid.
