Vision from Wandavision just offered an interesting and probably the most simple answer that is memory. If we take it to personification aspects, then the point that determines we are still who we are and never change it’s because of our memory. Or to be scientifically specific, our brain, neurons, etc never changed.

Simple. Both are real as they both exist but the old one, the one that was reconstructed is the original. The second one is made by new parts, therefore it's new. As for humans we remain the same because even tho our body, opinions and thoughts change, we still carry all of our individual experiences in our memory. And the changes in our personalites are direct result of those experiences. Also let's not forget that the case here is impossible. Noone can build a second ship out of scrap and noone can restore our dead cells in to existence. So in reality this paradox is only a hypothetical scenario - it doesn't really exist. Every problem in reality has a solution.

Well, I think I get my answer of this bateau de Thesée from Lao Zi: "We turn clay to make a vessel; But it is on the space where there is nothing that the usefulness of the vessel depends. We pierce doors and windows to make a house; And it is on these spaces where there is nothing that the usefulness of the house depends. Therefore just as we take advantage of what is, we should recognise the usefulness of what is not." (translate by Arthur Waley.) The empty , intouchable part of this thing is the most real, all the rest is just the replaceable material. Which make me think about : Bitcoin from Satoshi vs Bitcoin today, is it still the real "ship"? and.. Ethereum , is it??

I personally think that it is still the same ship because folklore surrounds it and Theseus' spirit is most likely still in the ship. Also, it is hard to eradicate an idea, so for however long it is remembered, that is how long it stays alive.

we are the construct of our habits, our approach to things, the way we do things, hardly changes over time after a certain age, I think limiting the metaphor to an object is an inadequate representation of a person, I think in a way the boat is the sailor, a person is an organism that's always changing in it's capacity to absorb the world around it, the pattern at which one extracts the information, comprehends it and applies it, is what makes a person. I am open to correction as I myself am not perfect neither is my understanding of the world.

The identity of something. Could you not say that the identity of something is based on the intentions of it? So if the Ship of Theseus is replaced by completely new materials, if it is still intended to be Theseus's ship, then it would still be the Ship of Theseus. Just how your cells renew themselves, the intention of them renewing themselves is to look like and be you, so the intention derived the identity.

Ok this one is kind of bad. If you use vague words like "the same", sure- there is a philosofical problem of "is the boat the same boat as before?". But if you approach it from more reasonable standpoint it becomes clear that you own a new boat if you swap all the parts for new ones. Person stays the same, because whille our cells may chanege, our tastes develop etc- we are evolving, rather than changing drastically. While writing this post some of my organism cells died and new were "born". That doesn't make me a new person. I used to dislike spinach as a child and now I like it. That doesn't make me a new person. That just means that we are constantly developing, and humans should be observed as 4-dimentional beings - as beings moving in time, not only in space.

Fair comment, however, it was a little unfair to say the video was 'kind of bad'. I believe in a way he has made the video universal to people of all ages and competency in English. Although no deeper distinction between the words or deeper ideas explored, the contention of the thought experiment remains. Thus, a child or someone who isn't a native speaker of English could still partake in this.

Minus25 it rlly depends on what we define as a “new”person. Some people may think that a new person is just a better version of what they were before, whether its mentally, spiritually, or physically. But at the same time, “new” could mean a fresh start, which in reality we do/ do not have. For instance, every day is a new day. But at the same time we cannot start over or relive our lives from the beginning.

Is it not also reasonable to say that the identity of something is the intentions behind its construction and its purpose rather than its materials? For, if the ship is still meant to be Theseus's ship, then it would be the Ship of Theseus. But if the old materials are used to remake it, then it would be a restored ship of the Ship of Theseus.

The answer about the ship. The real ship of Theseus is the one being used by Theseus. Theseus is who makes the ship of Theseus special and unique. Remove Theseus and put him on another ship and then that ship is now the ship of Theseus. Theseus is who makes the ship of Theseus the ship of Theseus.
