Due to the Sri Lanka's location, it has absorbed so many influences from neighbouring regions as well as from traders, migrations and culinary influences via the colonial period. South Indian, Indonesian, Malay and Dutch influences mixing in with local Sri Lankan culinary techniques has created quite a unique set of dishes within the culture.

Do not forget a huge influence on the pastries and snacks we call 'short eats' are all influenced by the Portuguese and many more things like language and names! Common misconception is we are called desi's, Sri Lankan's do not consider ourselves desi.

Sri Lankans are desi though. It's geography
@vepulan73 жыл бұрын
@@greenmachine5600 it's not geography it's culture and history. Bangladesh, Pakistan and India at partition call themselves Desi because they were a part of one nation, Sri Lanka was not in that. Desi stems from desa meaning land or country. Desi is a term unrealized by Tamils and Sinhalese in Sri Lanka. This is not a term known to us, I didn't learn this word until I met Indians, Bengalis and Pakistanis. Please do not tell me what I am, and am not.

@@greenmachine5600 Desi is a cultural term, not geography. Desi is generally associated with India (especially North India), Bangladesh and Pakistan - they're different to Sri Lankan culture which has been influenced by the South Indian and Indonesian cultures. People in Sri Lanka haven't heard of the word, "Desi". People, outside of Asia who are of Sri Lankan descent have heard of the term because it is used by Indians so that term isn't used by Sri Lankans.

I would say that the lamprais (the dish wrapped in a banana leaf) is a symbol of Sri Lanka's multi ethnic heritage. It was created by the Dutch Burgher (mixed Sri Lankan and Dutch) Eurasian community and in part based on the Indonesian lemper. It incorporates elements that emerged in the country's distinct ethnic groups and now eaten by all groups such as the frikadellar, cutlets and shrimp paste.

I think it's worth pointing out that Sri Lanka is a multi-ethnic country and despite historical and modern-day issues, Sri Lankan culture is "Sri Lankan" due to the cultural influences from the Sinhalese, Tamil, Moor, Malay and Burgher/Eurasian communities. Not to mention the other smaller groups like the indigenous Veddas, Chinese and Boras among others. Sri Lankan culture wouldn't be "Sri Lankan" culture without all of these groups.

My intention isn't to be divisive, but to acknowledge my ancestral history and intergenerational trauma. @@shan.sri. Brother, first theres no tamil genocide in Sri Lanka. Those are fake news which are made by the politicians and we know how the Sri Lankan politics works. As long as there is racism and fake news among races, its easy for the policians to be in the high places. It is done in every party including Tamil and sinhala. Also I should say we should think about our motherland instead of fighting for races and religions. The main reason why this country is not being developed is we don't have unity among races and religion. Also if take a country like USA or India they consider them as Indian or Americans, but here we first talk about our race not about the country. As I know ealam tamils need to separate and establish a new state in SriLanka but think if we all get together and live in one country with peace and unity by helping each other, we can easily develop our country. Bro, we should think about our country everytime. We should get rid of his island mentality and that's how we can achieve our targets as a united country but as long as Sinahalese, Tamils, Muslims work for their benefits, its hard to achieve. ස්තුතියි/ நன்றி

Biryani was brought into Sri Lanka by the South Indian Muslims who were trading in the Northern part of Sri Lanka and in Colombo in the early 1900s.[citation needed] In Sri Lanka, it is Buryani, a colloquial word which generated from Buhari Biryani. In many cases, Sri Lankan biryani is much spicier than most Indian varieties. Side dishes may include acchar, Malay pickle, cashew curry and mint sambol. Biriyani isnt originally sri lankan its only very recently its come.

I love the vedio!! Takes you down memory lane! Sri Lankan food is the best!! Especially the crispy hoppers and the lamprie!! I’m so glad you guys did this vedio, thanks Fung brothers and shanuk! I guess no matter how globalised the world will go.. where ever we live in.. our identities will stay as our root.. and also embrace cross culture!
