Invited to Tamil Wedding Lunch in Jaffna 🇱🇰

While driving down a small street in rural Jaffna we saw what looked like a traditional Tamil wedding. We stopped to check it out and the friendly folks invited us in to join them for their wedding lunch.
Another show of amazing hospitality in Sri Lanka.
I was pleasantly surprised that the lunch included meat. I had always assumed that Tamils were Hindu people and therefore are vegetarian but it seems that not all Hindus are Vegetarian and not all Tamils are Hindus.
That was the best meal I had in Jaffna. Much better than the food in my hotel and free, thanks to the generous people.

Hey Dale, Thought I’d clarify few things for you. Most of the weddings in Jaffna are arranged at their back yards since they are pretty large and it saves money. Next, you asked why the wedding was on a Monday? Well, Tamil Hindus prefer to have their weddings on an auspicious day and if Monday happens to be one, they go for it. Relatives will be present at the wedding and the ones that couldn’t get a day or half off would swing by during their lunch break. The senior lady with an orange outfit was asking you go get a pic with the couples and I’m glad you did at the end. Yes, Sri Lankan’s are warm and welcome! Have a fabulous stay:)

Dale, how nice to be invited to a wedding!!!.... that is true village hospitality!... whether Sinhalese or Tamil, village people like to welcome outsiders..... Buddhists follow astrology and I think Hindus too...they may have consulted astrologers for an auspicious day and time to get wed and that is why the wedding probably took place on a Monday!... not like in the UK where most weddings take place at the weekend.... it's the same with funerals and even the Government use astrologers to fix auspicious times for certain big occasions (say no more! 🙄)... even my father picked my first name in the traditional way using an astrologer!.... I don't think the married couple were annoyed or miffed that you boys gate crashed their wedding!... you did nothing to disturb them and they had more than enough food to go round (it would have been different if it was a middle class, wealthy hotel wedding with reserved tables and seats!).. I think the couple were happy to meet you and the bride looked overjoyed!... they just couldn't understand English.... and certainly not your Scots accent!... lovely, genuinely warm gathering of people... they wanted you there... you have to understand the body language of the people if not the language!... in Colombo you have a mixture of people ie Sinhalese, Tamils, Moors, Malays Burghers and others...they will all speak Sinhala (no matter what their race)... most will be able to speak or at least understand English.... but in Jaffna... everyone will speak Tamil... the more educated will also speak English and you will rarely find anyone speaking Sinhala (and there will be very few races other than Tamils living there)... I was telling my cousin about your vlogs and how they have opened my eyes to the beauty of the people and places up north which I've never had the opportunity to do so before, during or after the war.... I must visit Jaffna, Trinco and other places I thought I would never be able to see in my life time... tourists/foreigners like you visiting and filming and also Jeremy who is Sinhalese has given me confidence and inspiration when I honestly would have been fearful..... this is one of my favourite videos as it is truly heart warming to watch.... beautiful Tamil bride in vibrant colours... if you had found out the couple's contact details then maybe you could have sent them this video as a wedding gift ...after all you were invited to the wedding reception! 😊

Hi Daie, Great video. Tamil people are very friendly and hospitable and it is all in their culture. The small problem was the lack of understanding of English, due to that, the groom looked like, he did not smile a lot, but he said " Thanks for coming" by head movements.
