Chef Ellard and Bailey travel to Sri Lanka experiencing the great food and kind people that is the reputation of this island paradise. Moving through the country, on Vesak (Buddha's Birthday Celebration) via plane, train, bus, tuk tuk, surfboard, and legs Bailey and Ellard experience spicy, colorful, delicious Sri Lankan food everywhere they go.
The first episode in this series includes short-eats, rice and curry, papadum, roti, and an impromptu coconut refresher provided by a kind family in a simple village, on a hill, overlooking the ocean, in Mirissa. The people of Sri Lanka are the best!

This reminds me of another video of a western couple who couldn't make it to their accommodation in time, wandering through streets late in the evening. Then they bump into a man and had a brief chat, before he took them to his house, introduced his family, provided dinner and helped them stay the night at their small house. But they didn't take any money when they left! People may be poor, they have a big heart. When someone says people are best in Sri Lanka, it is not a cliche. It's totally true.

Lot of sri lankans are verry poor from money but they are rich from good morals, ethics, and good obligations..the reason is buddhism teaches the light life and happyness. I think you had a good trip..god bless you.

The reason is : Not any philosophy, it’s the moral of each and everyone living in Sri Lanka. Go to eastern part of Sri Lanka, Muslims and Hindus are living there, Go to Negombo area, There are many Christians, They will do the same things. It’s habit of our beautiful country. We love such a great people without thinking of Racism in the small country. We love our mother Country- we hat Racism.

That family was helping you. Usually, in traditional Sri Lankan culture, giving money for a help is treated as "not good", "not polite" or "an act of minimizing the help you got in return for money". I know that you tried to give money with a good heart, but, TRADITIONALLY, average Sri Lankan may not consider it as a "polite" act. Especially, with traditional Sri Lankans, not everything is money. But, this may have changed over the years in urban areas.

It's true that the kid or the family didn't expect to sell you drinking coconuts. That's their generosity. But considering their financial situation, you also could have been generous by offering them few hundred rupees (USD 2 or 3) at the time you leave. Since you missed the oportunity, now you can send the kid at least an ornament (a bracelet, figurine or something for USD2...) by post. I have a feeling that the kid won't admire the dark coloured post card that much.

What most non-Buddhists don't realise is Vesak is not only Buddha's B'day but also the day he attained Nibbana and the Day he passed away. In Sri Lanka, it is called තෙමඟුල (three-ceremonies) We celebrate all these three events
