Recently I have learnt this keerthanam from Guru Dr Renganatha Sharma [Cherthala, Kerala]. Feeling so blessed and privileged. Legend Dr BMK has rendered in his own inimitable style with great level of improvisation and uniqueness. The master has also rendered the Mela kartha rag Nata Bhairavai [of which Amritha vahini is janyam] with unimaginiable flourish. Pranamam guru!

Namaskāram to All, When Sri. D V Mohana Krishna, disciple of BMK listened to this upload, he called me and narrated this interesting anecdote about the making of Amritavāhini recording. While travelling with Guruji in my car, I used to play cassettes in the car audio system. The cassettes were mostly of his recordings and he also would enjoy listening to them. It so happened one day during one such rides (in the early 2000) that a recording was playing and BMK asked “Is this Amritavāhini?” I replied in affirmative. He immediately responded with enthusiasm saying, “This recording has an interesting story!”. The audio was recorded for an LP (long play record) of HMV. The plan was to sing a Kriti composed by Saint Tyāgarāja, one by Muthuswamy Dikshitar and one by Shayama Shastry. BMK had thought of a kriti and reached the recording studio. HMV requested BMK to sing “Sri Rāma pādamā” for the Tyāgarāja composition. But what HMV did not know was that, BMK did not know the Kriti. BMK also did not want to disappoint them. Sri. Annavarapu Ramaswamy (accompanying artiste on the violin) was sitting nearby. BMK asked “Ramaswamy gāru, do you know this composition?”. Ramaswamy said yes. Then, BMK got the notations and lyrics of the kriti from Annavarapu Ramaswamy. He studied it for couple of moments. He thought of singing the rāga as well. Then he rendered rāga, kīrtana and swarams. And, it was done. “That was the first and the last time, I tried singing “Sri Rāma pādamā” said BMK with a childlike laughter. The HMV recoding was then released under the title “TRISTHAAYEE” in the year 1983. Annavarapu Ramaswamy, Guruvayur Dorai and T H Subas Chandran were the accompanying artistes. Sri. D V Mohana Krishna concluded his narration by saying “It is in fact one of the greatest qualities of a genius to admit not knowing something, learning it and presenting it with perfection to bring happiness to the producers, is laudable”.

I have had this keertana since long and having listened to the version sung by Sri Balamurali garu, I just couldn't get that emotional feel from any other singer. The greatness of Sri Balamurali garu is that he gives as much importance to the underlying emotion of a keertana as he does to the musical presentation. Very few can do justice to both. He is undoubtedly a stalwart in that with none reaching his heights. Knowing Sanskrit and Telugu (His mother tongue of course) helps him in singing the words correctly without breaking them at wrong places. It is an injustice to his talent as well as music itself that such a stalwart didn't get the highest honour of this nation when a playback singer got it. No disrespect to Lataji, but ignoring a talent who invented ragas, wrote and composed music, is hard to digest. I didn't upload the same as it was of very low quality. Thanks a lot for the upload

I am a big fan of Lataji and BMK. Though I feel BMK does reserve a Bharata ratna, in my view Lataji is also a worthy recepient of the same. She could produce same effect of ragas in 5 minutes what classical musicians would need an hour to do. The definition of sur changed after her arrival atleast for all the female singers.

@@praghavan1973 Don't get me wrong, I am not suggesting Lataji isn't a great singer. I respect and love her as much. My intention was that as a singer, for most part she followed what the music director asked her, improvising and breathing life to the song of course. Sri Balamurali, on the other hand was a singer, composer, writer and created a few new raagas. I felt if we don't respect such great personalities who played their role in preserving and furthering our rich cultural heritage of classical music, it would be a great injustice. Certain awards shouldn't be just follow popularity alone.

Respected Sreenivasa Murthy Sir, I am 18 years old and I am very fond of Carnatic music. I am a huge fan of Dr. BMK and I find your videos very helpful. I find most of MBK sir's renditions here. I couldn't thank you enough for that. I am searching for a song since many years. I really appreciate (better to thankyou and grateful as I am like your grandson) if you can upload this song. Mokshamu Galada of MBK sir. I know that you have already uploaded Mokshamu Galada of MBK when he sang that at concert. But I missed that masterpiece Mokshamu Galada in the album Golden hits of Dr. MBK (if I am not wrong) where he sang mokshamu along with Sree Neelotpala Naayike, Vara Naarada, Rama Bhakthi samrajyam (recorded casset I suppose). My father bought that in the late 90's and when he converted them into CDs, he lost some part of that particular rendition somehow. He said that the swara kalpana was just brilliant. But I didn't listen to that as that CD was damaged. I really will be thankful if you can upload that particular Mokshamu Galada. Thankyou
