«SS Alferdoss»).

To me a ship is more than a huge piece of metal, it has meaning to it and develops a personality like a person in a way. The reason why a ship is referred to as a “she” is because it looks after her passengers and crew like a mother. Don’t be ashamed to love something inanimate because it would mean a lot to someone who was involved in creating it.

Nobody really seems interested in preserving the grand old liners, there are a handful that have found life beyond their time but most having served their purposes have wound up scrap. It's a pity as today's ships are more like floating blocks of flats.

You know HOW she sank? She was towed to Asia. There it should be an floating hotel exactly as like the queen Mary. But the ss America and it's tugboat went into a storm. Abandoned buildings, ships, churches or houses are not only dead constructions of wood and steel for me. They are living, breathing creatures, and they suffer the way they are treated, when people who built them dicide, they are useless now and leave them to rot and decay. Источник: stalkers.info/sudby-zabytyh-korablej/

I could be wrong but believe some images are of the sister ship (later and larger and put up in Philly) SS United States, The two look rather similar but SSUS is much longer and holds the record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic both ways. Its career lasted 17 yrs from 1952 until 1969. They are shown passing each other in NY harbor in one pic in this clip..

For the people who don't know, the stern washed away. It was sitting and rusting for a long time and finally fell apart. The bow however, is sort of still there. It's only visible when the tide is low

A beautiful ship with classic lines. It is such a pity that she was allowed to end her days with so little dignity.

Thank you for your sensible outlook and comments. I love ocean liners but they're lifeless things. I'm exasperated with the naivete and emotionalism of those who talk about preserving liners or lament their demise. How many preserved liners can be paid for and maintained? Very few. Nostalgia can be expensive; the liners were made to make money. Worse is some people's affection for liners being close to if not idolatry.

I have an interest in the history of the ships and plan to take a transatlantic passage on one some day. Not a cruise like some party ship but a real crossing. Having said that I agree that preserving old ships for nostalgia is fraught one. Take a look at the Queen Mary and, even worse, the sad state of the SS United States. At the very least turning them into aquatic reefs for ocean life to use and for recreational divers is sensible. Otherwise these great ladies suffer neglect and are shells of what they once were. Scrap them or turn them into something beneficial. We can all enjoy their history when they were great.

I travelled to Australia on her when she was the SS Australis in 1971. Such a sad ending for a great ship. Remember the old sailors saying about" it's bad luck to change a ship's name".
