Photographing the SS Nornen - Battling the tide. In this video, I battle against mother nature - Guess who won?
Last week I travelled to Burnham on Sean to shoot a couple of locations, one of which was the famous wreck of the SS Nornen. I wasn't disappointed. The wreck was much bigger than I had imagined. Despite the rain, I soon hatched a plan to photograph the wreck at sunset. It's more of a sunset shot but if I calculated my timings right I could potentially have a cracking shot on my hands. So how did I fair?...
The SS Nornen is a Norwegian Barque which foundered around the 3rd March 1897
The rescue of ten crewmembers from the stricken ship was recalled at a history meeting on Friday night (March 3rd), exactly 120 years to the day when it ran aground.
Burnham historian John Strickland recounted how during the early part of March 1897 a howling south-westerly gale swept up the Bristol Channel, bringing with it high seas, driving snow and sleet.
Many ships soon found themselves in distress, among them the Norwegian barque SS Nornen which had tried out to ride out the storm in the lee of the Lundy Roads but had found her anchors dragging.
The ship was being driven towards Berrow’s mud flats, and the crew desperately tied to save her but were fighting a losing cause.
In the early hours of the morning on March 3rd, the crippled ship was spotted just off Gore Sands, her sails blown to rags by the gale.

I can relate to the tripod sinking feeling, was while taking a shot of a different shipwreck. Knee deep in a wave didn't help me either. I still got my other shots in and had a great time. Great video Gary, thanks.

Reminds me of the Peter Iredale shipwreck on the Oregon coast. It’s nothing but a rusty skeleton now that is slowly diminishing in it’s battle with the ravages of saltwater and sand. Tricky photographing and filming conditions did not deter you from getting some nice images and a very entertaining vlog. Well done Gary! Cheers!

Great video Gary. I shot the Nornen a couple of years ago in similar conditions, so vowed to return. You've motivated me to do so. Gotta watch those tides, they are very dangerous. A lot of people get caught out and have to be rescued (and worse) I waited for the tide too, and was paranoid the whole time I was shooting.

Welcome to the Bristol Channel, Gary. I live on the other side near the Gower and the tides catch so many people out. There is a caravan park not far from me and when there is a high tide it scares the hell out of the visitors as the tide sweeps right in and cuts off access to the park.

A great video, Gary! I didn't know about this wreck at all. Congratulations on the 35,000 subscribers. I will have to check it out some time. I'm not sure when you were there, but you might do well on spring tides (full moon and new moon and a few days either side) when the tides will go out much further, but also come in much higher. And in somewhere as flat as that, the tides will move even quicker than normal during spring tides, so you have to consider your own personal safety apart from anything else. But at any time, the approaches to the Severn estuary have one of the strongest tidal currents and fastest moving tides in the world and, as Andy Roberts points out, has the second largest tidal range in the world.

Gary, If you stick it out, it's liable to get wet! What a great bit of history that also provides a striking visual opportunity. Your initial shots look like the ribs of a long-deceased leviathan telling an intriguing story. I very much appreciate your recounting the history of SS Nornen and stating that he crew all survived. As a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a PADI Divemaster, I am always aware that wrecks may actually be gravesites and should be treated with appropriate reverence. It's good to know this is not the case with the Nornen. Thank-You, Mike

Hi, Gary, I live about 12 miles from that shipwreck and have tried it many times. But it still surprises me that so many people don't realise that the Severn Estuary has the second highest tidal range in the world! I nearly lost my camera bag and it's contents to an incoming tide at Kilve (about 20 miles down the coast) a couple of years ago. It's better to shoot the coast around here as you follow the tide out.....and safer too.

Being from South Wales I would have assumed you would be familiar with the Severn tidal system? Saying that I actually got caught out myself at the very same location....had my tripod jammed between the bow of the boat for a different perspective... there is a permanent puddle in front og the bow and you have to step around it.. I miscalculated and had to step into what I thought was the puddle - good job I was holding the tripod & camera above my head - I was waist high when I stepped into the puddle! You still managed to come away with a few good images and I am sure like myself you will be wary of that tide next time :) Good vlog.

Absolutely loved this video, Gary. The way your passion comes across really made the video enjoyable and you built the suspense brilliantly. The pictures were great. What app did you use for the sunset? I've always wondered if there was a way to predict if there would be a good sunset or not? Simon.

I'm not sure the health police had 5 jaffa cakes in mind when suggesting five a day.. Were you shooting with a Lee ten stop Gary? The blue cast reminds me of my own copy though it works well in this location

Of course Jaffa Cakes are part of your 5 a day. I was a good boy and ate about 10 of them :) Yes it was a Lee 10-stopper. I actually like the blue cast :)

Thanks Gary... A 122 year old shipwreck & still there. I got a history lesson out of this too boot! Great shots btw... Love the hat, looks like you have a 3rd eye. Curious if there has been any discussion on conserving this ship before it disappears altogether. Thanks again, Bill... :~)
@GaryGough
@GaryGough 5 жыл бұрын
I've not looked into its conservation. It'll probably just fade away like most of the wrecks around the world. Cheers again Bill 👍👍

I saw Thomas Heaton use CD's under his tripod legs when he was shooting in the water on a beach. You think that'd work for the wet sand or the tide coming in around your tripod legs Gary?

Hi Gary Great vlog, did you do a vlog from the lighthouse as well?
@GaryGough
@GaryGough 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, I did indeed. I wanted a tide-in shot but the high tide didn't come in as high as I wanted so I was disappointed in the end. I'll still put the vlog out though.

Exciting to say the least. Enjoyed it as usual. Not wanting to teach you to suck eggs, but if you stand your tripod on 3 old CD's or disc's it will stop your tripod from sinking into the sand so much.
