Wonderful 8mm home movie, I wonder who that Star was? I got a glimpse of a 1954 Caddy on the dock, I would have to place this in the latter 1950s. Thank you for the share.

I made the Westward crossing on the United States in May of 1958. The deck chairs were the same as seen in this film. I have photos from the voyage.

Was slated as a part of a proposed itinerary in September 1969, but the ship was deactivated in July of that year. The bargain rates offered were a part of a budget, economy, limited edition western European tour offered by my Jr. High/ High School, Portsmouth Catholic HS. Remember seeing the options for travel SS US, or air travel. SS US was crossed out, so and wasn't finalized in hopes the ship would be back up and running. Missed it by two measly months. I think upperclasspeople had gone on the last offering cruise. The previous year. Took the travel proposal handout sheet home to my Mom, remember discussing it with her that summer. Had land travel, and accommodations with either hotel or family hostel-type setups. To even be considered I was lucky as a pubescent teenager.

What a frustrating near miss! But the SS United States was taken out of service in early November, 1969, so she still would have been sailing in September.

Its.amazing that such a monstrous machine was able to glide through the Atlantic ocean at 45 miles per hour.. Could you imagine the thrill of being on a much slower ship in the middle of the Atlantic and out of nowhere the SS United States glides past you like you were standing still

Technically that was only her sea trials, but during her Blue Riband earning maiden voyage, she averaged 35.59 knots eastbound (40.96 mph) and 34.51 knots westbound (39.71 mph). And that maiden voyage was at only around 70 percent of its engine power. During the last full day of the eastbound voyage, The Big U covered a record 814 nautical miles in the last 22.5 hour sea day at an average of 36.17 knots or 41.62 miles per hour.

@@CJODell12That's damn fast for a ship. Thing looks like a Cadillac but drives like a hotrod. Edit: spelling

The Flying Boat at Berth 50 in Southampton helps date the film to between April 1948 and November 1950 as that is when they operated from that berth.

I noticed the NYPD chopper at 1:55 which seems to be a 1948/49 model?

The SS United States made its maiden voyage from New York to Southhampton in July of 1952, so it would have to have been after that.

That was great! Do you think they were connected to Heinz? They certainly were impressed with the ketchup advertising on the side of the double Decker bus!

Got to be pre 1956 or VERY soon after as the railway coaches in the Southampton are all in the 1949-56 livery. For important trains like the boat trains the new maroon liveries would be used fairly soon after introduction. I would think more likely to be early 1950s. I have some early (1932) footage of one of the first round the world cruises including some kodacolor. Possibly around 300 or so feet of the cruise.
