When she broke _Queen Mary's_ record she was "just cruising" using only 60-ish% of her available power to average 35.59 knots on her maiden voyage. After that she ran to schedule. We never did get to see what her fastest trans-Atlantic time could have been if they ran her flat out.

+oceanliners andshipsonline Should've replied sooner, but you betcha she is! I was expecting her to be the eastern counterpart of the Queen Mary. I was never expecting her to sail again. When I learned that she was going to head back into service, I was stunned. With all that said I'm looking forward to 2018 and seeing how it all works out.

I remember being a young boy of 9 years of age when we were in England for my fathers work for about six months. We went down to see her coming in & I must say she was stunning & the smoke stacks were huge ! I was surrounded by British people & I can still remember being so proud I was an American . well 3 years later we went back to England & sailed on this incredible liner . We had sailed on the Queen Mary & a few other liners but I will always remember the captain of the QM saying we were doing 31 knots & while on the SS United states he told me they were doing 36 knots & it just seamed much smother on the SS United states . Does anyone know if the SS United States had better stabilizers ? Just wondering ? Happy New Years !!!

Watching this makes me think of my Uncle Art Snow who is part of the original crew of the US as he would always call her. Watching her being built knowing he was there and when I watch her driving through the water knowing he was in the engine room setting her through her paces. On her sea trials and Maiden Voyage he ran the Forward Fire Room as a Second Engineer. Within a few years he was 1st. Assistant.

She was an elegant ship, a floating dream... too bad she won't be sailing anytime soon, but The Big U doesn't deserve to be scrapped, people have to get up off there heads and save this amazing piece of history, but I see her every month cause I live near her, in south Philadelphia, she is basically my patron ship! In my room I have a picture of her, too.. so if she gets scrapped I will always see her in my heart... this is the last of her kind, the SS American Star (her sister ship) is already rotten into the sand, she and the SS United States were beautiful Ocean Liners! (Fact: my profile image used to be the SS United States)

Very disappointed with this video. Without doubt the most undeserving video from your collection. It doesn't take into account her withdrawal from service in 1969 and the reasons behind it and there's no mention of her being laid up in Newport News, Virginia. There is absolutely nothing regarding the UNITED STATES going to Turkey and to the Ukraine to have her asbestos removed prior to an aborted conversion into a cruise ship before she eventually returned to the USA to lay up on the Delaware River in Philadelphia where she still remains. This video could have and should have been twice as long as the ridiculous 04.27. So much has been missed in this video and for those who are totally unaware of the history of the UNITED STATES they would be non the wiser. This has surely put me off viewing any more videos from your site.

It is a damn shame to wash that thing rot away strip it down and leave it to rot this country we live in is going to shit thanks to Republicans filibuster filibuster filibuster we could have had 0% unemployment if they have been working on the infrastructure for the last nine or 10 years but you need to go talk to McConnell about that going to spend money on this beautiful ship even made it work again use it not every day just make it to where it's usable
