Launched in 1927 the SS Uruguay was originally named as the SS California, and was notable as a world first for turbo-electric propulsion in a large liner. As the Uruguay her GRT was approximately 20,183. She sailed as the SS Uruguay from 1942 onwards and served a number of roles, finally being laid up in 1954, and scrapped ten years later.
This 16mm amateur footage shows a cruise trip departing New York on June 18th 1948, bound for Rio de Janeiro. Interestingly, the famous Canto Moishe Oysher is a passenger, though this footage was filmed by Louis Epstein and shows much of life above decks during the voyage (seldom would an amateur have access to lighting for indoor shots at the time).
This was digitised frame by frame at 2048x1152 resolution from the original film.
