It's the Ness yo-yo glitch. :3 How it works (from wiki): 1.Use Ness' up smash and hit any opponent or destructible part of the stage with the outreaching part of the yoyo. Charge the yoyo very slightly before releasing. 2.Make sure that, after the yoyo is released into its upward swing, it doesn't hit anything else. 3. Troll your friends and laugh at their confusion.

+Sam Huang double jump cancel is actually really simple, and is a part of 4 character's toolkits (mewtwo, yoshi, peach and ness). all you have to do is use an ability (any ability, even B specials) during your double jump and it will cancel the upward momentum instantly. its most principle use in actual fights is to use aerials very low to the ground, much lower than would be possible by SHFFLing, and also notably easier to input. what you see him doing here is jump > frame 5 double jump > frame 6 airdodge straight down or with a slight angle > repeat

+Sam Huang for a DJC aerial that is exactly right, any time after jump or short hop is used (it makes no difference in the timing), you can jump again and then immediately input any attack to cancel your double jump's vertical momentum. as for the second question, this technique is entirely different, which is why it belongs exclusively to the 4 characters with the largest and most unique double jumps. i assume why this trait was added was to prevent people flying past their targets when they try to use these double jumps to connect with an aerial. however the applications are really endless (especially with Yoshi who can turn around in this double jump, then cancel it with a move). it is a very underrated and valuable technique in the neutral game, quickly altering attack paths or using low reaching aerial hitboxes to shield stab at people's feet.

It's called the Ness Yoyo Glitch. When Ness hits someone with the the first hit of his upsmash, the hitbox is left on the ground. When you attack, the hitbox travels back to you in one frame. It will attack anyone in it's path, which is why Dr Mario got hit even when Ness was below him.

+Eduardo Echeverria wavedash is more about timing than just jumping quickly, you jump and ideally as soon as the jump animation is finished you air dodge downwards and to the side at an angle that uses the momentum of air dodging to slide you forward or backward. you can also wavedash perfectly stationary by air dodging straight down.

+NGCaptainM that is the infamous yoyo glitch. when you hit with the charge of upsmash, which only ness can do, with its first active hit frame the hitbox doesn't disappear, it just lays on the stage. when you use an ability this hitbox then rushes back to your character within 1 frame, hitting anything or anyone in between them, even multiple targets. you can also put this hit box on yourself by using upair, downair or PK thunder 2, which is what he does to pichu at 1:11, covering himself in PK thunder 2's hitbox.

So..like...I LOVE the yo-yo glitch, but I seem to have a problem with the yo-yo hit box in which you have to hit the opponent with. I've done it a couple times at a friends house, but practicing it on my own time, I can't seem to get it ONCE. Is that a glitch that's only possible on certain copies of melee? I know it's not technically a TAS question as much as it is a general gameplay question, but I figured I'd ask just in case - since I'd assume you have a pretty firm understanding of mechanics due to TASing. Have you done it on multiple versions of the game? Do I just suck and need to git gud/simply got lucky those 2 times doing it at a friend's place? lol
