A phantom hit occurs when an attack hitbox comes in tangent with a character hitbox, and basically just barely grazes them. In a TAS scenario that is pretty easy to setup. But I loved the execution in the video

He can. This is a TAS, meaning the creator of the video went frame-by-frame (Melee runs at 60 frames per second, so one frame is 1/60th of a second), inputting buttons perfectly.

I think it would be productive to add a small vocal explanation about TASes before each TAS vid. Just like a 5-10 second clip where you would say something like "note, this is a tool assisted speed run played with slow down, and other helpful out of game instruments to help achieve optimal gameplay. For more information, visit TASvideos.com" or something of that nature. It would help spread awareness of what TAS is, and you wouldn't have quite so many comments about the impressive skills things. Just a suggestion. Love your content :)

So, how does this TAS thing work? What does it do?

purposefully chaining phantom hits...oh my goodness gracious EDIT wait that gives me an idea. Now I don't think this would work too well since usually characters lean back and forth when their shield is broken, but theoretically couldn't you punish a shield break with a bunch of fast, low landing lag aerials and finish with s/t like a falcon punch or charged up smash attack or anything else to that degree? I'd imagine the way characters move around in post-shield break daze you'd have to precisely weave yourself back and forth in the exact position to land phantom hits, but it could still be possible. The "almost applicable in real life but not really" alternative would be that for w/e reason their hurtboxes DON'T actually move so you just have to find the right distance and shffl/smash attack/etc. Just imagine after multishining someone's shield to pieces fox phantom shffl nairs you to like 90 percent in a few seconds...
