It's not, but IIRC the dude that makes it is a huge Dwarf Fortress fan Also, worth noting that while graphically it looks a lot like some DF tilesets, the gameplay is more like a hybrid between Fallout 2 and a traditional roguelike, with a splash of sandbox The biggest characteristics it shares with DF are the death and suffering, and the ability to do some pretty wild stuff with the tools it gives you

Incorrect. Regeneration 10 grants immunity to decapitation, and has a 100% chance to regrow limbs the turn after they are dismembered. Add Multiple Arms, Multiple Legs, and Two Headed for added memes. You'll never run out of limbs. Alternatively, avoid melee enemies with forcefields, phasing out of space, teleporting, or stopping time.

Plus you heal HP fast as shit. My most successful character has Regen, stat boosting mutations, and the adrenaline rush. Works great.

I tried utilizing lava as a source of money after finding a lava weep just outside of the stiltlands. Unfortunately, it was still early on so I had no means of using grenades to freeze-dry lava waterskins. I considered just buying every glass phial and selling it back filled, but thought that was way too slow and inefficient. Then I realized that I only needed a container to be able to hold its capacity in lava long enough for me to sell it, so I filled up glass jars I bought from the same merchants and sold those back to them full of lava. Happy with my newfound wealth, I proceeded to walk away from the merchant I just sold several jars of lava to only to come to an epiphany. I realized that I wasn't playing any old basic game, I was playing Qud. At that moment I thought to myself, "What's stopping the jars from breaking after I sell them?" That's the neat part: nothing.

I think it's a tad bit more accurate to state that sseth worked around the mechanics, and became god so hard that the devs had to invent other gods to counteract being god. Making a sandbox RPG with this much open endedness asks to be broken not because breaking it is something players should do, but because the option is made available. The fear is that Sseth is the omnipotent god of breaking games, finding every crack, and exploiting them all at the same time, and making the experience of being a deity well worth his time. Even the basic lava economy was likely patched out to prevent exploiting on a mass scale, and yet sseth pushed through anyways and laughed at the face of patchwork because, he could.

They kind of are patching out the fun bits. Y-know that thing about using precognition to reroll eater nectar? Yeah they patched that out in the beta. Between that and roleplay mode (non-permadeath which I play because, I want to play the fucking game) precognition is kind of pointless. It's a bit lame but, I get it. The real issue is that these kinds of games are inherently prone to being broken, and you have to allow a bit of it to be fun at all. If you want a lesson in why limiting player choice for balance sucks, look at the history of D&D 4E.

Someone probably beat me to this but I went to the wiki for Nutty Putty Cave. The man who died was *far* from the first person to get stuck but he was stuck in such a way that he couldn’t get out without breaking a ton of bones. A rescue team even tried to get him but they couldn’t with a pulley system, and wouldn’t send anyone in due to the obvious added risk. In a sort of memorial for him, an agreement was made with the wife to close the site permanently with his body sealed inside. The area above the spot was also blown up with explosives to cause a collapse that would hopefully bury him in the rubble.

I think some fun exploits should be left in, but if there's too much you can exploit then at a certain point it's left to the restraint of the player to decide whether they break the game or not. "Do I want to cheese my way through with infinite money or do I want to play legit" The devs are trying to remove the cheese. On the opposite end you have games like Kenshi who really just don't give a fuck what you do. There are tons of fucking ways to exploit the game to get what you want, and do shit unintended. The problem though is that a lot of players instinctively take the easy way out, or the most simple way through progression. Meaning that a lot of them will use the cheese, at least for their first few playthroughs.

I started binging CoQ recently and it's actually absurd how much better this video gets the more you learn about the game. I've come back about 3-4 times now, and every time I re-watch it I spot and realize things I didn't before.
