As a Chess player, one thing I learned was that while grinding for specific elo (mmr) ratings can be good ways to set goals... ultimately your elo does not exactly determine your true ability as a player - only how much you win. Just as in Rocket League, in Chess there are styles to climb quickly, and there are styles to get better quickly, and they are frequently at odds with one another. If you're trying to get SSL... that'll probably mean needing to get better more than instantly climbing to the next arbitrary milestone, unless you think that you're mechanically already capable of SSL in which case you just need to stack up wins. Obviously there's a balance, you shouldn't play too crazy in lower elo games (that's smurfing) because you know you can confidently outplay them positionally rather than needing crazy high risk plays. All it takes is one tiny mistake and suddenly a Plat will score on you. But in lobbies where you're against good challenging opponents, it can be very beneficial for your game to play more aggressively and really put them fully to the test. In Chess I hit 1599 elo while my goal was 1600... while I didn't initially hit the rating I wanted and lost a lot of elo after that, I was satisfied that I'd improved to a level where I knew I was capable of hitting 1600. Few weeks later I hit 1600 "officially" but in my heart I'd already hit it weeks ago when I got 1599. What I'm saying is, don't let a few numbers determine your identity as a player. If you feel like you're good enough to hit 1700 in RL, call yourself a 1700 player and then just think about the grind as getting to where you belong. No need to be nervous on the brink of 1699 or whatever, you're not breaking into some elite next level, you're just coming home for the first time.

I love watching this series because it almost seems like I’m competing with cbell. Through the series we’ve literally had the same ups and downs, and I keep running into him in games no matter what my mmr is at. (We both dropped to c3 and went up to gc2 and 1700 at the same time) one thing I have noticed tho is that he’s improving way faster than I am, because he trains more than he plays and I play more than I train. This journey has been fun so far, and I hope we can reach ssl together!❤ ( SYXShadow btw)

You likely won't see this, but a little tip for performance under stress. When I was in jazz band to play drums, I had a whirl wind of emotions. It was extremely stressful for and I would often fumble. I was fortunate though, one my friends who plays guitar for a band suggested that I simulate the stress when I practice sometimes. So I began doing some push-ups and quick steps to get my heart rate going, get myself sweating, and get me stressed. At first I performed poorly even in the calm of practice, but over time I was able to learn to work with the pressure, not against it, and calm myself down in the process. Which leads me today, performing in front of much larger crowds and in RL, near 1800 pushing for SSL and climbing like crazy. Just a thought.
