Great video. If SSL came out with something that was a mix between the BigSix and the XL-Desk, it would be a smash hit....a 24 channel mixer with a built-in interface.
@davespeakmanmusic6 ай бұрын
Yea! I suppose at that level though, it’s nice to have a choice in converters too. The newer SSL converter seem pretty good but the technology of conversion seems to still be progressing where as analog desks like the XL-Desk are what they are. It would still need the converter to be on a patch bay to get full use from it. 😀

Thanks for posting this Overview video on the SSL XL DESK. Seems like a great way to work and with 500 rack seems like a great package. I'm thinking of grabbing one for my Studio. Subscribed.

I like and respect SSL. The only weak point is the preamps. So, Neve is always my personal choice
@davespeakmanmusic5 ай бұрын
Yes, I have the AMLs for that (Neve clones). To be honest, I think the SSL preamps are underrated - the VHD is amazing for drums and the super analog circuit is perfect for recording Jazz and classical. Sometimes the Neve can be a little too warm. 16 neves would be great though. I’m going to add 4 more this summer. 😀

You can get SSL EQ style kits from Link Audio in Germany.

Yea I’ve seen them. I’ve seen mixed reviews of them on Gearspace. Have you had any experience with them?
@raymondbriars90174 ай бұрын
The 4 stereo channels do not seem to switch between line in and daw, like the 16 mono channels. Also, the xl has just a single tri-colour led instead of a proper meter.

Will do. What do you want to hear through them? I can do a breakdown of my whole mix buss. I also have the API 529 (2500) which I could compare to the SSL G Comp if that would be interesting?

@@davespeakmanmusicYou do you. I'll be very appreciative. The point of API is the punchiness. How different units can be used at different points in the chain.

I would be interested to know how you’re using all of your I/O of the console. It has been said the you could use some of the other the I/O for a lot more than 24 channels. I haven’t really seen videos of how people are putting that to use.

The desk isn’t a converter - it’s an analogue console. My converter is thunderbolt.

@STOCKUPwithLarryJones I use a Focusrite Red 8 for the first 16 (it has 16 line in/outs) then the next 16 come off ADAT from another two Focusrite claret converters.

01:50 - My argument would be this: If a recording engineer isn't printing any EQ/comp on the way in, they're basically offloading all the work to the mix engineer so they can make any creative decisions. It's a bit lazy in my book! When you think about it, the longer you go down the chain (Songwriters --> Performers --> Producers/Recording engineers --> Mix enginers --> Mastering engineers --> Actual mastering to disc/vinyl), the less creative input each stage usually has, as creative decisions made in the previous stages are "mostly" set in stone. i.e. You wouldn't have a mix or mastering engineer remixing a track or changing the lyrics. It wouldn't make any sense. So I'm totally fine with producers and recording engineers printing effects, so long as they don't do it in a way that makes my mixing jobs more difficult. As long as the band members like it. Some of my best mixes are those where the direction of the track has already been decided by the band, producer(s), recording engineer(s) and printed to the audio tracks.
@davespeakmanmusic6 ай бұрын
I agree 100% Jim! Decisions is what it’s all about. I’ve been getting into just printing a sum of all guitar mics, snare mics and kick mics too. Committing! I feel like it makes me think about it and listen more if I know that there’s no get out clause!
@PrincipalAudio6 ай бұрын
@@davespeakmanmusic Aye! Older engineers didn't have the luxuries we have now (computers with almost infinite tracks). They had to commit and bounce. I think it makes better engineers of us to do it that way.
