SSL2+ Audio Interface! Why I'm Worried

A tech new video talking about Solid State Logics new audio interface called the "SSL2+". I talk about why I'm a bit worried about it. One thing no one asked or demonstrated was the software side on this audio interface. Will it have virtual routing software like it's competition (example UAD, Focusrite, and Arturia have virtual routing software. My second concern is the lack of I/O's. Where the ADAT in? ADAT in would make it flexible for all kinds of engineers. How do you feel about this audio interface? Please leave a comment below!

If it reaches 0, it peaks, simple as. Ideal recording volume is -18 to -12 dBFS, with peaks at -6. That's why 24bit and 32 bit audio exists, to lower the noise floor and give you all the dynamic range you need.

The ADAT point is right on the dot. When you mentioned an issue you had at the beginning, I was hoping you’d say this. 2 inputs is aight for small ITB stuff, but this as a small but expandable hub would be infinitely better. I’m surprised they didn’t do this seeing as SSL is known for their digital connectivity with analog consoles.

Edit: A friend of mine brought up a good point about the USB power... Technically USB (only) powered audio interface Mic-pre quality is bad. However, it's type C which uses more power than Type A (which is good).. Btw, I took another look at the SSL SiX and it doesn't have an ADAT out! That's not a good look for that $1500 price point.

What I like about it (without owning one yet): Top controlled. That's so much better when you adjust volume a lot. All cables out the back and out of your way. USB bus powered. The mic preamps can drive a Shure SM7B mic without cloudlifter or similar needed. Nice ALPS pots, and seems to be very solid build quality and good clean sound + low noise. ------------------------------ I do wish it had 2 extra inputs. Maybe just a stereo line input. I'm sure a bigger version later will have that, or even ADAT input as well. The Audient ID14 is a great competing interface and it has ADAT in and good quality overall. But I'll be watching the SSL2+, see how the reviews goes.

From what I understand the 4K is kind of similar to Neve's silk red, only it occurs after the signal starts to red line a bit. It's a post-peak, upper harmonic distortion coloration of sorts? I guess I don't really know. Half guessing half asking. Loved the review I'm hype to get one. I won't pre-order, but I have sweetwater emailing me when they're in stock, because I plan to watch the forums for problems. The price point is what concerns me. It's too low for an SSL pre. If it has no problems, then IMO they're about to bankrupt competitors in the 2 input range. But rn I have three interfaces in this range. two focusrites, and an old ass mbox mini. my machine does NOT fuck with anything focusrite driver related. And the mbox mini driver crashes my computer at least once a day while using pro tools. So If I'm gonna constantly eat shit, I'd rather do it for a way better pre-amp.

I've been using a Zoom R8 as my audio interface with Reaper for the last few years and would like to upgrade to something that gives better recording quality. One thing I like about the R8 is it has a "Direct/DAW" knob that I used to balance the recording track(s) with the playback tracks through my headphones. I assume the SSL2 Monitor knob is used to do this? Also, I have no need for midi or the extra headphone since I already have a 1 to 4 headphone splitter. With that said, I think the SSL2 would work for me.

Hey guys, I figured out some badass shit. If you get a headphone to xlr cable, you can actually plug the headphone jack into your channel 1 or 2 input on the ssl2, and you can actually process drum samples, or anything really, from your DAW, into the ssl's preamps, WITH 4K ON, and back into your daw. this means you can process anything on your computer through the ssl's preamps! amazing.

Thanks for confirming there is no virtual wires on this, its helped my decision to buy it. One reason I Would never ever use a focusrite again is the virtual mixer that has to be run in background. I has a Sapphire and could never work out how to do the routing to an analog delay and back in. No one in support forums could even help me. Being a noob at the time, I was was only hearing 2 right channels as monitor for a year and half, no wonder my mixing was crap. I felt it was totally unnecessary. I moved to an old 8i 8o Presonus which was just plug in and play. All the audio routing I needed I could do in Ableton, no need for extra complication.

SM7b is a very low impedance mic, meaning that it’s SUPER quiet without a preamp that has a lot of clean gain. But before you go buy a cloudlifter, check out the Triton Audio FETHEAD. Both the fethead and cloudlifter use phantom to boost the signal about 20db. Think of it as a preamp that comes before your actual preamp.

Hi! I am a new sub & NO EXPERT in any of this. I like jazz & make records on my iPad Pro (2018-late- I use HarmonicDog DAW for recording into my iPad). So, I am a newbie. 1st, what is an “adat” and 2nd, I looked hard at this unit. As best as I can tell it is not Class Compliant and so, unusable for iPad recording. Is that correct? I bought the Steinberg UR22C & a Scarlett Solo Gen3..........I think those two are OK for what I’m doing but I would appreciate your opinion. Great Channel! Thanks & Cheers!
@guitarmx103
@guitarmx103 4 жыл бұрын
Bob Marley I don’t believe this unit will work with your iPad as you run into driver issues with that version of IOS and conversion issues with lightning connectors. To spread the ADAT love, it stands for “Alesis Digital Audio Tape” and was originally an early form of digital recording. However all you need to know is that ADAT lets you connect your audio interface to another interface or preamp unit to add more inputs or outputs to your recording setup. It’s a digital rather than analog connection, sent through an optical cable, which has almost no latency. If this SSL2 had a single ADAT OUT slot, you could add up to 8 more inputs to the interface, giving you 10 preamps for when you want to record more than 2 mics/instruments at once. My interface has two ADAT In and two ADAT Out ports, allowing me to add 16 more inputs and 16 outputs. This is extremely convenient for recording full bands, and the outputs allow me to mix “out of the box” (through a mixer). If possible, use a PC or laptop for recording, or if you’re set on touch screen, SLATE makes touch screen DAW (digital audio workstation) controllers that are like huge iPads for recording!

Well, ADAT seems a bit dated. What I think would be great instead is a USB 3 standard. Why do all these interfaces (except Apollo and Steinberg) still come with the old USB 2 standard?
@AveMcree
@AveMcree 3 жыл бұрын
ADAT might be dated but it's the best way to insure I/O expansion. Which increases the value of the audio interface by a lot. I agree with you on on USB 3.1 but the only problem with thunderbolt, type c, etc is no computers are compatible for those types of speeds yet.. So it's future proof a future we won't see for a while..

The Presonus comes bundled w/ Studio One. That’s attractive to somebody who doesn’t already have a DAW
@largepoodle6036
@largepoodle6036 4 жыл бұрын
that's not a great argument, because the SSL2+ comes with SSL native vst's, 2 you get to keep forever, the rest you get a 6 month trial for, you get 1.5gb samples from loopcloud, and you also get protools AND ableton. lite editions on the daw, but still. also, i've heard decent things about studio one, but I'll never use it. if you really want a great DAW, but don't wanna break the bank - get REAPER. totally free, you get 3 months full version for free and reaper has the best stock plugins of any free daw in the world. their stock compressors are actually fuckin magnificent. but you don't have a daw, so you probably have no idea what I'm even talking about right now. point is, get the ssl2+. you'll get so much more bang for you buck. you'll get lite editions of protools, ableton, and if you download reaper, the combination of those 3 DAWs will enable you to do anything and more. not to mention, reaper is $60 for the full version, making it the cheapest daw. i started on FL studio in like 2006-2009, quit for several years because I wasnt really a musician or a producer. came back as a musician to reaper, and I got started learning how to mix (in combination with tons of actual hardware rack gear in an expensive studio), using reaper. reaper is a great place to begin. i use fl studio now, and I have for the last 5 years, just because I know the program inside and out like the back of my hand. But I downloaded reaper last night, and I'm about to start using it again in conjunction with fl studio.

@ukaeyfvkfiayuvefyiu 4 жыл бұрын
The III I started on Reaper. It’s definitely nice. The bundled plugins are definitely good as well. Somebody could totally have a pretty sweet setup with just that and some select other plugins. SSL2+ would definitely be an attractive interface for that exact use (good interface with some nice bundled plugins to augment your current setup).

@@seerking mm good question, I am getting an astounding conversion rate out of the SSL2+ that is working very seamlessly with ableton atm, ( however the Scarlette runs fine on ableton aswell) Id say By a Razors edge and i mean edge-The SSL2+. its built like a tank, all plugs are routed to the back the volume goes to 11, People complain about the metering however if you have any meter on your pre- or in your daw with it your FINE and it is very stable for not having many Leds. One of the reasons I choose to say the SSL2+ is I also ACTIVELY engage the 4k setting.On the scarlett it sounds awesome but i really dont -tinker' with the tracking or fidget with the pres.- my answer obviously is fpr personal.Still On a pro tip i would say SSL

Damn Ave... You showin your age big time bro... Nobody really use ADAT I/O anymore. Most stuff these days is just stereo I/O. That's why UAD Apollo is number one right now. Seriously, most Pop, Trap, Hip-Hop and even a lot of Country is done with just stereo I/O. And also, no real SSL console has ADAT I/O so... Having said all that, I do wish this interface had word clock so we could decide if we wanted to add some other types of i/o or not. But as always, thanks for the great video.

ADAT I/O would be great if you would like to use this card as an extension for another multitrack card. So with that you could use more input, and use the ssl 2+ as the main controller for monitoring.

You're better off getting a focusrite an go with the plugin collective for the long haul! An thank you on the ADAT, mention cause again look up the focusrites with adat! Plus a 4 channel interface is only about $50 more ,always go with as much iO as possibly you can afford when you expand your studio youll thank me later! P.s another reason it aint worth it cause its a 1st gen!

The uad definitely outshines all the competition.they don't cater for CPU. The whole DSP thing is a major improvement in terms of processing power.i hope to see ask get in there. I have 2 focusrite interfaces and still struggling with CPU especially when dubbing over projects with tracks over 20 sometimes even less .I'd say £500 would be a great price starting point if they had a DSP accelerator.

Peak monitor? It's clearly a USB logo connection so it lights up to convey it's powered when connected, but peak? You have light on each channel to show you 'peak' if you cannot read the lights and see your peaking then I'm concerned... check the manual or download it before making a video man hehe
