It is great to have reviews based only on measurement and solid facts and not about emotions about the actual interface or personal impressions. It gives a great overview of baseline interfaces. I hope more, higher range interfaces will follow in time. It would be great to chart out how an RME Babyface, a Clarett or a UAD measures to these. Keep up the great work. If I might have a suggestion: it may be useful to some to mention the AD/DA chip used. Okay if you open the unit they can be easily spotted but most users just won't do that.

@lassi65474 жыл бұрын
It's nice to see this specific data. For instance comparing the Focusrite AIR mode and SSL 4K mode felt earlier impossible. Your data shows clearly that Air is more like a high frequency eq boost, but 4K is a boost + saturation. That makes it a much more useful tool from a musical sense, because anyone can EQ their recordings in post but the saturation is something more interesting and unique - at least in theory ;)
@lassi65474 жыл бұрын
Just upgraded to this SSL 2+ from my age old UR22mkII and I'm super happy with it. I would have gone for the MOTU M4 but they seem to be impossible to get at the moment, and I needed a solution. I'm VERY impressed with the sound quality of this interface. The 4K button really gives an audible boost of oumph to your vocal tracks. I found that using the 4K setting for some rock vocals made the track sound instantly good, crisp and gritty, and this cuta bunch of the post-processing out saving time. The headphone amp is ..just... powerful enough to drive the Sennheiser HD650 headphones I have, and these are 300 ohm impedance - this is pretty much the only thing I wished had been better on this interface. I love the two separate headphone outputs otherwise: so handy for having one set of cans for mixing/mastering, and another closed set for tracking/recording. One thing worth mentioning is that the included software is actually really nice: Hybrid Keys from Native sounds great and I found the Vocal Strip plugin is really useful and EASY to use for mixing vocals. So all in all, I'm super duper happy.. and not regretting I didn't wait for the MOTU come available. This interface has immediate taken my recording quality to a whole new level I didn't realize was possible from my living room.

Please do not put a break between sounds when comparing. You should instead switch back and forth several times during the sound so that we can hear frequencies spiking. I just swapped to an SSL2+ from my M2 due to driver incompatibility on my PC, loved the M2 so was quite sad to swap, but so far I'm finding the audio in/out of the SSL feels a little more full. Though the M2 had noticeably lower latency for recording, across the same sample rate, which has been the biggest setback so far. That being said, the M2 being slightly more affordable is an absolutely incredible interface, I couldn't recommend it enough, especially as it feels more portable too, but if you wanted to have a more complete sit-in studio, the SSL is a slight cut above just in terms of audio in and out quality.

@alexbreyer69214 жыл бұрын
Certainly could be a bigger bang for the buck. The 4K sound could be achieved via so many other options I don't consider that to be worthy of a higher price tag. The lower noise floor on the preamps is attractive, but when you heard the comparison of noise between several models, the M2 sounded nearly identical. I'm of the opinion that for most recordists it would provide a similar result given the same room and microphones. Both have okay and not stellar latency, but this is an entry point product. But the M2's DAC is either marketing hype or just offering a nicer monitoring experience. You'd either be in the same ballpark or head of the game for much less money. Frankley, this kind of product from SSL kind of bums me out. They could have done something that really challenged the Apollo Twin or BabyFace Pro for a quality desktop unit. Instead I'm thinking the cheap MOTU is the smart money for a simple setup.

Nothing stellar, but you'd need to spend much more for something with character or vibe. Both the SSL and M2 will get the job done very effectively. Certainly, considering price and features as laid out by Julian, the M2 is the smart buy. It depends on your needs, but if one or two tracks at a time is all you record, I can't see a reason to buy the SSL over the M2.

It's not 4K recording the 4K button when pressed down mimics the sound of the SSL 4000 Audio Mixing board you find in multimillion dollar studios. When pressed it adds a high end sheen and saturates certain harmonics

Your videos are so informative, thank you. Any thoughts on the SSL2 Mk2 that just came out?

Great review! Do you know how this compares to the SSL2+ ? Wondering if there’s more to the + version than the additional outputs.

Hey Julian, great review as always! Have you ever considered using the MT32-SPLite piece if software from VB-audio to test driver errors and callback timing error at various sample rates/buffers? I've found it to be a very useful tool for observing the stability of the driver audio stream and I'd really like to see many different interface comparisons that way. I'd do it myself but I can't afford lots of different interfaces!

I have not done this yet. But it sounds interesting. I'll check it out.

@@JulianKrause thanks! I appreciate it! I've used several of his pieces of software and they're really cool. Voicemeeter Potato is the virtual mixing console I use and it's very helpful for livestreaming and such.

Hello Julian, are you planing to review the Steinberg UR-RT2 or 4, interface with Rupert Neve transformers? It would be great if you would test it out in your way :)

Hi Julian, thanks for much for your videos, I really appreciate the no nonsense, informative style. I'm hoping that you get a chance to do the same kind of review for the Audient iD4. I know you've covered all the usual suspects in the lower cost interfaces, but it seems to my ears the Audient iD4, while having limited input options, has outstanding audio quality, a step up from the other interfaces you covered, but I've never seen any truly objective measurements, not at the level of precision and detail that you focus on. To my way of thinking it's the best of the bunch. I hope all is well with you and yours, thanks again for the helpful videos, all the best, take care.

I bought an iD4 and for an unknown reason it suddenly stopped working. I might get a second one as it seems to be requested quite a bit :)

@@JulianKrause Interesting, well that's certainly worth noting for a start! That is one thing I came across in a couple of user review complaints, but not read "officially": that at some point there were issues with an early production run and a few DOA units--apparently that's been addressed--I haven't read anything like that lately, but I will look into it. I just subscribed to your channel, and I hope to see your review of the iD4. I believe it would be in Audient's own best interests for an influencer like yourself to do one, and they should just give you a unit to evaluate! MOTU, SSL, Universal Audio are obviously well known high-end brands getting into this price range, and Audient doesn't seem to have the same kind of visibility in that space, despite their reputation for superb high-end consoles. One "bit" of info I can share (no pun intended...well maybe just a little) is I did talk to their support folks and they confirmed that the iD4 uses the AKM AK4621EF CODEC. And if there's anything I'd like to see in your reviews (that I can request now that I'm a subscriber!) it would be tear-downs detailing and teaching about the various components used in the different units. I know that real world interface results are more than just what I/O converters are used, and it would be interesting to see what components are are in the different units, how they impact results, as in the case of the Steinberg and its unusually poor EIN. Thanks again for the genuinely helpful videos.

Hey Julian, so I picked up an SSL2+ and did comparison recordings with my Audient--I returned the SSL. I would be very interested to see what kind of testing results you get when/if you review the iD4. To my ears there was a subtle but definite mid range push with the SSL, and on a vocal recording the 4K button just caused more sibilance than "air"-- might work out for some folks, it's certainly a good deal, and as your testing showed very quiet (if colored) preamp/converter path. Hope all is well with you, take care.

Ha, ha! I not only just discovered your tech test chan, but I love your deadpan straightfaced humor! He doesnt even crack a smile after a joke!. All tech, displays their specs on "paper", but until Julian tests it, it's just vaporware brag.

I've had the SSL2 for a week now.. Good clear sound and it's a joy to use. And I love that all the cables are connected in the back. No clutter on desk
