Rick and Maddy, Every time I come onboard I learn something and grow from it. This time was no different. These are memories that I will go back to often. I’ve seen incredible sunsets, astonishing sunrises, some of the most turquoise waters in the Caribbean, the moon rising over the ocean, dust all the way from the Sahara desert. I met some of the nicest people from all walks in life, made life long friendships, eaten some of the most delicious foods in the Caribbean….and learned a thing or to about the cruising lifestyle. You, Maddy and the Moore household we consider to be family. Looking forward to more episodes of the SSL Journey. Cheers my friends until we meet again 😎

You are right about the sailing lifestyle. It's the people and there lifestyle you meet. The memories, the laughter, taking part in what they do on a daily basis and how they smile and it's about this great gift that is bestowed into our lives by a higher power and sharing knowledge and smiles with each other. As the rolling stones said " A smile relieves the heart that grieves and only love can conquer hate. I wish you and Madaleina the best from Anguilla. Chris Mahoney.

When you make it to French Polynesia, maybe I'll fly down and visit. I was lucky enough to have a relative leave me an inheritance and i have been traveling the world for the last 25 years and love it. So we are on the same wave length regarding traveling the Islands. Every Island I go to, I stay at least a month. So we could have some time to trade stories of this beautiful world that God created. My girlfriend Alba and I are addicted to travel. Grenada and the Grenadines are by far the most expensive places to buy groceries. I'm talking just the basics. I know that Tequila was one of your favorite places. I liked it up to getting robbed 2 times. I lived on the hill at the town line of friendship and Port Elizabeth. I threw a party for a lot of the local people I had like 50 people in the house I rented. It was a large 6 bedroom in friendship mountain. The police were no help at all. I later found out it was a gentleman that was supplying drugs to the cruise ships that were docking in Port Elizabeth. The crew would come in at night and meet up with so and so at the chestnut tree across from the pizza hut on main street, where all the locals hung like fat man taxi. Even with the name of the perpetraitor no action was taken. There palms were greased by the dealer. Just a heads up if or when you ever return. See ya around Bora Bora or Moorea. Stay safe.

Each connector adds resistance. Each break in the cable adds resistance. You won’t gain much if you have the solder joint in the middle. For best results you want to cut the coax to length so that you get the exact right Ohms at the radio. The Ohms will vary like a wave down the length. You might want to switch to N type connector. Use the crimp type with a proper tool. They are actually water tight.

Canada just surpassed both the percentage of first doses and % of both doses and here in the west end of Montreal (suburbs in the West Island) there hasn't been a single case in 3 weeks and no deaths. There are 8.4 million people living in the province of Quebec and 62 new cases per day vs Connecticut with a population of 3.5 million and 409 cases reported today. We have 83% of Quebec with one dose and 55% with 2 doses. We have removed most restrictions. If the numbers improve we should have no restrictions by Mid-August. Canada is doing really well now including Manitoba and Ontario. Stay south as it's so beautiful. Stay safe! USA/Canada border to open August 9th to vaccinated people.

Hi Cptn Rick to answer Mr. Bean's question. I do think that the crimp connectors for the antenna is the right way to go. You get a better connection on the ground side of the cable keeping the 50ohm impedance. As I mentioned before, soldering the cable is not the answer as you will loose the correct impedance. You will need to get the correct connectors and crimping tool as the dies are made to put the correct pressure on the cable for the tension required. You can solder the tip of the center core once it has been crimped. I do feel that all the solder connectors be replaced including the barrel connectors and the lighting bulkhead connector.

Proper and safe dingy. Not sold on complex electric propulsion though. Solder it you can always cut it loose later. Make sure there's a full shield of the outer casing wire over the connection. As you know. The complexity is growing on this vessel. Try to stay with a manual pop injected diesel. A more robust rudder mechanics and manual steer backup while you're at it. The Pacific is another planet comparably. Good fishing in the Pacific

Love the channel guys. Keep it coming. On the VHF cable. Don’t mismatch the cable. Going from a low loss larger diameter cable to a higher loss smaller will create more problems. Check out the LMR-400 cable. Check the loss spec on the cable. Usually rated in dB per 100 feel. Lower is better. And try to do a single run from antenna to radio. If you must have a connection check out N Type. Much better. Lots of options and the clamp style can be reworked in an emergency. Oh yeah. Hand soldering will likely be worse than the PL connectors. Messes with the characteristic of the coax too much and ends up causing more signal loss due to the mismatch. The whole 50 ohm cable characteristic thing is important to get as much energy to and from the antenna as possible. Hope this helps.

I have dealt with a PL 259 connector for many years. Your viewers comment was correct about the pluses and minuses of PL 259. They are what they are you have a spare couple of them I would install one. There are some newer versions that are Teflon insulated which is a little bit better. I would never use a crimp on PL 259. I would not try to splice coax either. I would assume these new VHF radio‘s have the ability to test the cable & antenna for proper operation. If not some local marine radio repair shop probably has an SWR meter and a quick test will tell you that if everything’s working right. Seal it back up and forget it.

Hey Rick and Maddie, perfect timing - July 17 and we were scheduled to leave for 10 days in Tortolla and touring the BVI’s on a 5 boat flotilla. Unfortunately COVID strikes again as the BVI’s are not yet open to large groups. And since our Flotilla was designed around a group of 40 people hitting 10 islands we were “again” derailed until June 2022. Did I mention this is round 3 of a trip originally scheduled for early 2020. Oh well, it drew me to your channel and SV Delos starting early in January 2020 and completing 320 Delos Videos and 250 of Sophisticated Lady. I’ve become quiet a couch sailor - I’m originally a scow sailor and racer and using the upcoming trip to try and convince my wife who enjoyed small boat sailing more than the power boat we last owned that maybe it’s time to cast the lines and enjoy a new life. I enjoy the balance of land and sailing adventure, and through you, San Andres and Columbia ( where Cartagena was always on my list due to a love of Pirates, Rum and Author Randy Wayne White) but San Andreas seems like such a beautiful and friendly stop compared to all the past negativity it gained during the 80’s. Keep up the good work, enjoy the footage and lessons, and again have another 11 months to prepare for our voyage of maybe “ No Return” By the way - as a avid rum drinker and collector - Check out my other favorite Facebook group Ministry Of Rum - some of that 20 year old stuff your getting is not actually 20 years old, and since your in a great port for rums to be found you will be shocked by some of the bargains out there in true age dated products. Rum has become such a difficult category due to the number of styles and non-regulation by many countries. Find yourself a FourSquare or anything by RL Seales such as Dorleys 12 and enjoy.

I do customer service for tornado warning systems. Most of them are radio activated. When I am dealing with a customer that is having signal level problems generally from poor site propagation. cheapest first step is to upgrade the antenna cable from the stock RG-58 we ship to LMR400 or LMR600. Running your cable as a single piece would also help. Every connection is a point of resistance, the fewer the better. Checking the SWRs' is always a good idea. A decent RF Watt meter can be pricey. Next time you are in a port, you should be able to find a radio shop and maybe, they will rent you one, with the , for the couple of hours you may need it for. Make sure it comes with the correct adapters for your cable and radio. Hope that helps you out.

You 100% need to check the SWR on the antenna. You could damage the radio with a poor SWR. Yes, use the larger coax, RG8. Not RG8X or any of the small stuff. The frequency you are transmitting at you need the low loss coax. With RG8 mini you lose a lot of signal by the time it reaches the antenna. But #1 thing you must do is check the SWR. Call in someone if you have to. I can’t stress how important this is. John, N6JVD Cheers brother!

I have to agree with others on the VHF cabling issue, get a new run of marine grade LMR-400 coax and avoid any splices. It has better low loss properties and was specifically designed to replace the old standard RG8 for high frequencies. Use some pure silver solder and do the end connections yourself.
@EBIKER563 жыл бұрын
Hi Rick. As a communication technologist of 35 yrs. Please do not solder the coax cables together. This will cause an impedance imbalance in the cable and the resultant high SWR that will damage your transmitter. I would instead replace both connectors with the "N" style male and female connectors with the right adapters for the cables. They have better environmental sealing than the PL259's
@wizardgmb3 жыл бұрын
Pl-259 connectors should have been replaced with N connectors decades ago as was the case with commercial radio equipment. However, substituting them into SL's system and adding adapters is just increasing complexity and potentially decreasing reliability. The newer Pl-259 connectors with the separate center pin have most of the advantages of the N connector without introducing adapters into the signal path.
@EBIKER563 жыл бұрын
@@wizardgmb The adapters are not to change format but to have the correct fittings for the cable sizes. Normally you order the connector for the cable size and the right ones are supplied. These will not insert more loss. What he has now has enough loss as it is. The idea is to remove those PL-259s out of the system. Like I said I have been doing RF systems design and diagnostics for a long time and am just suggesting best easiest fix for his situation, bar replacing the whole cable run from top to the radio with one run, which is the preferred solution.
@wizardgmb3 жыл бұрын
@@EBIKER56 One cannot remove the Pl-259 connectors from the radio/antenna ends of the cable run and replace them with N connectors without using N female to UHF male adaptors. If you are advocating only swaping out the connectors at the base of the mast, why have a cable run with two each of two different connectors? The UHF connector with a separate center pin and compression shield connection is just as watertight as an N connector without introducing the need for yet another spare to be carried. The ends don't justify the means... P. S. I have 40+ years working with RF system design, installation, maintenance and repair. I hold two FCC licenses and was formerly a Certified Broadcast Engineer.

Maddy, I seen a program on a 3d printer that can print high heel shoes, regular sandles for the beach, and for swimming. I just started 3d printing and it's definitely awesome. Get well soon.

Exploring the culture of different lands is why I would be out there, just when I was young enough to do that type of travel, I just had a shortage of funds and back then there was very little internet much less fund me type accounts. Still no regrets on anything I’ve done or not done

Willing to help with the dingy conversation. Adventure seeking on my own dime. Fabrication, mechanical, construction and project management background with a sprinkle of understanding of electricity. Mechanical mind. Just completed my own RV van conversion in 2 months. Have passport and vaccination.

@@SailingSophisticatedLady I looked at your website and did not see a contact email for you. I dont have an IG or Facebook. I could email some pics of my projects so you can verify my skills and determine if they would be helpful. Like my grandmother said "not all help is helpful".
