Yes, the Darien Gap is one of the most notorious locations for narco traffic, as it is the dividing line between Colombia and Panama in the middle of the jungle, far far away from any form of civilization in either country. It has been a very hard border to protect due to the depth of the jungle on either side, so the natural place for smuggling is on the ocean around the small peninsula that divides the two countries. We have never been down this far in Panama, so everything is new and unknown to us.. but around every corner a new adventure awaits!

Rick, not sure when this happened, but it feels like the immigrations guy fleeced you. I was curious what I as a German would have to pay for a visa. Turns out, according to resolution 1128, dated 14.02.2018, I can enter the country without a visa. Took me a while to find Germany, I didn't expect it to be the first in the list, "Alemania"... ;-) I was curious, so I checked for Canada - turns out, you don't need a visa either, Canada is on the list. This list seems to be for tourists, though - not sure what requirements are there for longer term visas, the website I found isn't very functional, at least not in my browser...
