Great video, Thanks for the help. I just had to replace a thermostat on a 2010 model. We(brother in law and car owner) stumbled upon a “tool” that helps compress the thermostat spring when putting the new one in. We got to the point where compressing with just outstretched arm wasn’t enough. We hooked up a clamp and the cardboard tube, but my clamp wouldn’t sit properly on the tube. My brother in law found a metal fidget spinner in his car. It worked like a champ!! The spinner allowed us to rotate the thermostat into place so easily that we were shocked. Put the spinner on the end of the cardboard and clamp away. It seriously took us 5 seconds once we got everything aligned. I’m throwing a fidget spinner in the old tool box.

The rubber seal on your old Thermostat was the thermostat gasket. The gasket that came with the thermostat is called the thermostat housing gasket. The rubber thermostat gasket is to seal the coolant passage to avoid any coolant bypassing the thermostat. Without it, the thermostat will not fit securely in the housing and coolant will push past it when it is closed. Hope this helps.

Can you remove the old thermostat rubber housing and put it on the new thermostat or does it not need it on the new one
@MrPowerstroker3332 жыл бұрын
@@nonamccuien7045 it needs a new one typically. The rubber hardens after repeated cycles of warming and cooling. This will cause leakage and reduce the effectiveness of the thermostat itself. These gaskets are available at any parts store that sells the thermostat and only cost a couple dollars. I would definitely replace it.

Great video. 3 things would be helpful. The gasket has a sticky side... it would be nice to tell people if the sticky side faces the engine block or the thermostat housing (the tube you removed.) It may be easier to compress the spring for the install of the themostat by putting it in hot water before installing. It would be nice to identify the intake heater hose for those that want to use a flush kit.

@@pabp7765 Thanks, I see now the shape makes it fit just one way. I laughed with the struggle to get the thermostat in the housing... I watched another similar video re the thermostat on a Saturn Outlook and when the housing was removed the gasket material was really nasty looking. He didn’t show how he cleaned that housing or the engine surface where the housing sits. I haven’t changed a thermostat in a long time and when I did unused a razor edge to clean away the old gasket and then a rag to clean the surface smooth and dry. But since I didn’t see yours or the previous video I am curious if you just placed the gasket in position and tightened it down or did you use as gasket adhesive? I’m quite a bit older than you and I’ve changed a bunch of these on 70’s era engines and so I’m just curious if anything has changed or become easier. Thanks for the video it was helpful and much more helpful than the previous one I viewed because you explained it much more clearly in addition to taking the time to position the camera. Believe it or not most people I’ve seen so far when I research these repairs don’t seem to grasp the reason why people view these to begin with-to see what the hell is going on so I can avoid making mistakes and wasting time. So good job once again. I’m now a fan.

did you purge the air out of the system? if all of the air is out of the system, then you need to make sure your radiator fan is coming on, they don't come on until about 220 degrees, if your fan comes on, then you need to make sure your radiator is not clogged up and you have good circulation, which would be water pump, radiator, etc. by the way I'm a professional mechanic been doing it over 35 years
