I did a remodel on a house that had a set up like that from the same era and what it was is that there was a concrete set up like that and then a fiberglass insulated liner that set down in it and the hoses all hooked to jets in the fiberglass shell

Probably was an inground fiberglass spa. They normally put the spa in a hole and fill around it, to the bottom of the seats, thus the concrete box. the three pipes; from the spa to the pump(suction), from the heater to the spa(return), and the air line to the jets/ seats(the blower). I was a professional pool/spa repair tech for over 30+ years( I have put-in many of these systems).

That's a concrete protective enclosure with expanded polystyrene on the walls to insulate against winter temperatures and generally retain heat, the hot tub itself would have been fiberglass/acrylic drop in, with a lip over the deck edge. Plumbing for the jets was between the drop in and the polystyrene lined concrete box.These were incredibly popular. Over time the acrylic resins degraded with UV, cracked, and the drop in tubs got junked.

Believe it or not, an outdoor hot tub is really fun in the Winter, especially in the snow. You can sit out there with all the steam coming up around you and be really warm then the snowflakes feel cold when they hit you but they don't make you feel cold because of all the hot water you're sitting in.

Those types of hot tubs were quite common up here in Canada because of the equipment could be inside the house and the hot tub was outside but they often would run them off the hot water heater instead of using electric to heat it

It was very popular with those 60s/70s modern style homes to have a greenhouse with a water feature. I think they were going for a Frank Lloyd Wright Falling Water sort of vibe. As others have said, there might have been an artificial waterfall/pool/stream with fish in it. Opryland Hotel might be another touch point for understanding what they were going for. It was built in 1977 and includes a whole river with boats inside of its atrium, with a world famous garden. You could run that endoscope through the pipes to see where they come out.

Hello from the Netherlands . that space in a point where your plant towers stand has been a shower room so there is an elevation and a drain as a " shower tray " . I've seen this kind of setups and layouts on videos before. you should have a look at " abandoned villa " and such search terms . I think there is or has been a swimming pool under that floor. and outside the hot tub . can't you get that black farmers plastic somewhere cheap or free that they use to seal their grass silage? . then you just loosen a few planks so that you can just barely get through, just clean the concrete swimming tank, put that plastic in the hoses and see if the old installation is still alive or can be got in with a little maintenance without incurring costs ( dismantle the pump by hand ) . see what happens . maybe it all still works. Sincerely Hollandduck from the Netherlands

back in the day, before having just a hot tub became a thing those tubs didnt have all of the self contained pumps and such. a hot tub was just like what you have there. remote pumping equipment etc. then the marketing department took over and got engineers involved and tubs became cheap and easier to sell.

We had the same setup for our hot tub. House was built in 1980. Tub in the deck, machinery in the garage. We had a gas water heater. Lines for both water and bubble air. Bellows type air pushbutton in tub blew air through a tube to machine room. Connected to a five position switch. Off, low no bubbles, low with bubbles, high with, high without. Maintained it until we sold house in 2012. New owners scrapped it.

It's a set of equipment for an old fiberglass hot tub/spa that sat in/on the concrete vault. The rim of the hot tub probably sat on the deck. That's is a sand filter (probably Sta-Rite brand) 11kw electric heater (that is now made by Hayward) and probably a 1.5hp Sta-Rite Dura-Glas pump. The other item was an air blower. It's all trash now. Pentair bought Sta-Rite many years ago.

Some of the Older hot tubs were actually called just spas and had systems like that with no actual self pumps. . It would of sat down 👇 n the area that had been reboarded up .. they might of got tired of cleaned my the leaves up etc . All the under concrete heat vents would be an easy issue I would diffently redo. They should of boxed it all in not just layed in the concrete . 1978 old home for sure many layers. Many hidden stuff.

They just put a hot tub shell in the deck and put the motor and heater under the house so that it can still be serviced. The pipes were ran to feed the hot tub from the pump. With a regular hot tub sunken into the deck like that, it would not be able to pull the sides off and service it. That simple. Great video!

Hot Springs Spas were popular in the 70s. My guess is that the pumps and other items away from the unit are to reduce the noise. You should trace out the small panel you saw in that corner towards the end of the video. That was likely the maintenance port and it's likely somewhere under your house.

There are two styles of spa's and hot tubs. There are commercial ones and the self contained ones. That was a commercial one where the pump and filter are separate. They removed it probably froze during the winter because it was turned off or the electricity was off so there was no heat for it. The self contained ones have the pump and filter under the hot tub or spa.

I have one of those Intex inflatable hot tubs. Its nice but has no jets, only bubbles, LOTS of bubbles. Be careful using it indoors as mine leaks a tiny amount (so maybe put something waterproof under it). Last winter I used it in my garage then during draining I spilled a lot of water on the floor, enough that it would cause major issues in your tiled room. Wherever you put it, have a solid plan to deal with leaks, splashes, humidity, cleaning & draining.

There most likely had a spa/hot tub on the deck. Four clues. The big brown thing in the corner most likely was a bubblier for the spa/hot tub. The pump looks as if it would be a two speed pump which is normal for a spa/hot tub. And the electric heater is just that; heating the water in he spa/hot tub. Three conditions concern me though. You have a horizontal high efficiency gas furnace in your sub basement yet I saw no air supply for the burners. That furnace only has one PVC pipe showing and that should be for the exhaust. You should trace that pipe to make sure it's open and not low enough to have snow or dirt block it. Second, on the electrical heater, I believe, the metal clad 240 volt power line has come apart and laying on the metal sheet metal duct. Should vibration penetrate those wire the duct work can become energized. That should be disconnected and blanked off properly. And the supply/return flexible tubing is run in PVC to the outside I would believe and those can be easy run ways for rodents to invade your home. They should be foam sprayed for sealing off them capped off with metal so rodents can not enter. Have the combustion fresh air for the furnace checked first. If not proper that can allow carbon monoxide in your home...and you should have at least two detectors in the living spaces of your home anyway.
@berniemiller47043 жыл бұрын
This is a spa set up with bubbler(the odd thing in the back. Yes that’s a sand filter. The under deck obviously is where the spa used to be. The old owner should have taken it all out. Fiber glass tub insert. The mechanism or pump and filter stuff can be separate from the the tub itself. All you needed was an insert or tub. Would have cost less then what you paid for that inflatable.
