Hopefully you won't lose a pump every time you get lightning. Two things. 1) Surge protection for your electrical (and make sure electrical and grounds are set up correctly). 2) In case of a widespread extreme emergency, a manual pump for your well. They are pretty expensive, but might be worth it for that bad disaster.
@nyannyan1234563 жыл бұрын
My last house, I had a well pump issue. It turned out it was the wires going down the waterline. Every time the pump turned on it would twist in the casing. This caused the wires to rub bare and short. New wires and a good tape job I was back good as new.
@claytoncoolidge9923 жыл бұрын
Everyone is talking about expensive pumps yet everyone forgets about the pitcher style pumps. They make some cool ones that offer the ability to actually attach pipe so u can hook it in to fill things in the house. Its hand operated and takes 2-3 gallons of water to prime. When I was growing up we had an old artesian well that we had to replace when we bought the house. So once we moved in I helped install an old cast iron wash tub and drilled a hole and mounted the pump to the side of it and hooked to the old well. Pour a couple of Gallons of water to prime it open the valve and start pumping and after a few pumps you would have a the water you could want

They are no longer every day items, and a good reliable one is going to cost a lot more than you might think.

Store water as high as you can so when you have no power you can use gravity to feed it to where you need water. Just remember to take the weight of the water into account as water is heavy in bulk amounts.

I am sure the well pipe was placed behind the retaining wall for appearance and so you do not trip over it. I do not see why you would have to move your entire bed. Likewise, I would suggest digging around the pipe a couple feet and adding gravel. Or making a gravel spillway. If you have room and your location is right. I would install a cover over your well also. My mothers well was struck by lighting twice in one year here in Florida, many years ago. So we built a well house over it. I believe it was a10x10, and it allowed for room for her water softener and her salt and such. The well has never been hit again. I would also like to add. Rainwater catchment is a good idea. But I find, more importantly, it is to have things to store water in when you are raising animals. My chickens are watered in two ways. I have a 50 gal drum set up with PVC pipe and watering cups. This provides my 20ish chickens with water for weeks. I also am big on water gardens. So I have multiple small ponds that my dogs can have water. I use preformed pond liners for water gardens, and I have a 150 gal pond liner in the chicken run for MORE watering opportunities. Congratulations on your new homestead ! I personally love coming up with ways of sustaining my small property. As you know. It takes time for all, so happy homesteading !!

"yucky" water for animals: Have you ever seen the chunky stuff animals routinely drink when on pasture? Backup water: I use IBC's (yes I check for original contents) hooked to a 110V pump with its own pressure switch which I hook to the pressure tank through the drain valve. Works great. I sure know what that feels like to go without water for an extended time. We had to go deeper with our well and it took a bit to muster up the resources. (Wound up at 800' deep) There was a lot of hauling during the interim. I'm currently in the process of going 100% solar on the well. You can do this even if you have a 240v pump. Make sure your inverter has the beefy transformer (called low frequency inverter). It's an investment but I feel well worth it. I also recommend an above ground storage tank. This can provide emergency reserve water should the submersible pump stop working. Someone in the comments mentioned a whole-house surge suppressor. I've installed one and strongly recommended for others as well. Didn't mean to go long here. :D

You're lucky the well breaker tripped. I came into the house after a power outage to the smell of burning plastic accompanied by frying bacon sound, with smoke pouring out of my breaker panel. I held my breath and turned off the main breaker and it all went out. Burnt the pump breaker contacts and ruined a total of 4 breakers. I hate to think what would have happened if I had not arrived when I did. That was a few years ago. After rewiring the breaker the pump worked fine until this year. It would sometimes pop the controller overload, and impedance test showed leakage to ground. Finally it wouldn't run at all after pressing the reset, so had to replace the pump.

I still need to run a new wire from the house to the pump and he always flushes the pump out while he has it out. That dirty water is pretty normal, the shaft is over 100’ but the well doesn’t sit all the way at the bottom so it is always sucking in clean water
