For me it's even 'worse' hearing this - Had the somewhat same situation and because our piping is so 'old' and the pipes so 'small/tight', every apartment has a 'device' installed behind the toilet that literally 'shreds' your shit and toilet paper to pieces and pushes it down the pipes. lol And you are only 'allowed' to use 2 ply toilet paper. As a Russian citizen I resonated with a lot of the things Ethan said. I also live in a country ruled by a vicious dictator. There were also lots of protests, an overwhelming disapproval of the government and things of that nature. We also have a mandatory conscription service. We also live in a culture of very broken and discouraged people because of how much our government has crushed us time and time again. So, as Ethan I also felt a strong urge to shout at the world 'We're not our government! We're not bloodthirsty animals! We don't support this egotistical crazy man's murderous ambitions!'. And, as Ethan, I also felt heartbroken when (it felt like) the whole world turned on us, peaceful citizens, equating all Russians to evil monsters no matter how much we did or didn't do. But having said that, at the same time I can also understand why the world is not interested in hearing and emphasizing with Russian perspective right now.. So what I mean is, while it is clear that Ethan means well, you can also understand that it might be hard to emphasize with the aggressor while the aggression is actively happening.

How anyone can look at the situation in Gaza and believe that it is resulting from a unique moral defect of Israelis and Jews is stunning. It is precisely this mentality towards the people of Gaza that has allowed this to happen. People in North America like to sit comfortably and believe that they would rise up and rebel, when that is absolutely not true. ANY people can be the target of genocide. ANY group of people are capable of enacting it. The fact that the Jewish people suffered a genocide and then a group of them went on to commit another should be proof of that. This is a moral defect of humanity. The average person is not introspective. The average person wants acceptance from their peers. The average person doesn't have great critical thinking skills. The average person will choose the path that is easy in the short term. Doing the right thing takes courage. The average person doesn't have much. Anyone who looks at individual Israelis or Jews and sees an enemy is staring at the trees and not seeing the forest. They have learned nothing. They are continuing the cycle.
