Congratulations. On my induction cooker, I was able to run continuously at 530W. I burnt my IGBT after reaching 850W (after 2 min of running). Though from mains, the power drawn was 850W, the current in coil was 20A (I use FGA25N120 = 25A). I have a current probe to measure current, but did not measure the voltage across coil. Also, the heatsink in my case is much smaller, which was causing the IGBT to heat up extensively. I am still guesing if the failure was due to over temperature (and hence sideeffects) or over current spikes?

I have a question: Where the sparks go? They seem to quench in the air. Also, some points. 1) for the shunt you could try a chunk of thin iron wire. 2) Is the bandwidth of that pocket oscilloscope enough to read fast peaks? If the bandwidth is not high enough you end up seeing smaller voltage peaks than real, and the fact it does not change much after removing one capacitor could be a hint that the peak is lost because limited bandwidth. Could it be the case? 3) I wouldn't trust much the insulating properties of that keypad or of the LCD display.
@KaizerPowerElectronicsDk
@KaizerPowerElectronicsDk 4 жыл бұрын
1) Capacitively coupled to ground through the air. 2) You are right, the ADC of those handheld DSOs can hardly do 1/10th of their specified bandwidth for a square wave, its sad, here I test the DSO138: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3bUkpSamNObpJI 3) The voltage in the primary circuit is only around 600VDC peak-to-peak from 230VAC mains, if this was a DRSSTC, the voltage would be much higher between the L and C of the primary circuit, I would not trust it either, but failure is not around the corner to knock through the plastic at only 600VDC.

DiodeGoneWild It seems odd that you have the 18v zener diode going directly to ground. Wouldn't that allow a very high current through the zener if the emitter-emitter junction of the BD139/140 ever went above 18v? Perhaps a small current-limiting resistor between the emitter-emitter junction and the zener would be better?

Instead of a resistor to measure current try using a wideband current transformer. Permalloy coil (from old ground fault interruptor) and terminated into a 51R resistor at the scope input with some shielded coax cable as lead should give a much better current waveform. You can also calibrate the coil using the inverter, using a high power resistor ( like a stove element, though that will be slightly inductive) to get a defined current flow through it.

Great job there, but Im interested in this question: why, once I start my tesla coil, any electronics in a perimeter of few meters, stops working properly. Not able to take a video like this, for example, the phone starts all possible apps and zooms in and out by itself and etc. The TC is with simple circuit powered by dc voltage (19,5V), it is SE with a single cap, a resistor, mosfet(irfp460) and potentiometer. Sometimes it powers up a neon sign a few meters away, sometimes I need to bring a luminescence bulb very close to light up... the snake(due to Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs) I have managed to get is no more than 5-6cm long, but hot enough to melt steel and strong enough to leave a lightning scar on wood, but I dont really understand what and why it happens. Would you please explain. Thanks.

SSTCs has a much lower peak current in the primary circuit and the voltage/current rise rates of the secondary coil spark output has a more smooth sound. SGTC and DRSSTC has very high peak currents and that makes them MUCH louder. The difference in primary peak current is also at the other of 20-40 times higher.

You should lower the primary inductance (fewer turns), turn down the BPS and get some longer arcs. I got up ~50 cm discharges from my SSTC2 seen here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mX7dZZKDfsuWj68 and what about your handheld oscilloscope, what is the band width of it? I doubt it can truthfully show a 400kHz square wave. That is why You might see those superimposed sine waves on the high frequency signals, the ADC can not do the job. For others that want to build SSTCs I have collected a few basic theory calculations for the inverter design: kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/tesla-coils/sstc-design-guide/
@DiodeGoneWild
@DiodeGoneWild 4 жыл бұрын
I definitely plan to try fewer turns on the primary. The handheld oscilloscope says it's 5MHz 20MSPS. This secondary runs at 142kHz. The oscilloscope should be able to somehow display it. The voltage waveforms look like a nice square wave. I have already googled into your website accidentally several times during the last decade :).

@@DiodeGoneWild It would be interesting to see what the input CLK is on the TLC5510, this clock speed is the amount of samples it can do in the falling edge. So if it was running at 20MHz as the datasheet example, it should be able to get 40 samples on a 50/50 dutycycle, but if you are looking at primary current interrupted at 200us, that is properly down to 0-1 samples. So you can not trust this to show a squarewave at low on-time at 500kHz. But just in case I am wrong, could you try to do a test with it hooked up to a squarewave generator sweeping it from 100 kHz to 5MHz?
