The timing of your video is great! I just bought a used SylvanSport Go & stayed overnight at a campsite after I purchased it. I set it up at the sellers house & packed it up when I left the next morning. No issues. I set it up at the campsite. No issues. The next morning I was unable to bring the top down. The handle was spinning freely counter clockwise. Looking underneath the winch area I saw the cable was wrapped both on the inside & outside of the drum. It was also shredded by the winch teeth. At that time I didn't even know what kind of system Sylvan used to raise/lower the top. It was a Sun, so couldn't call them for help. Had 350 miles to get home. Ended up shoring the top with 2x4's wedged in each corner & zip tied to the upright posts, and driving slowly home. Eventually I learned what lift system the Go uses. Sylvan told me to take it to an RV Center to get cable replaced. My gut told me that with the right attitude, information, patience, replacement parts, etc. I could do it myself. Just so you know, I've shared your video with the entire SylvanSport FB group I belong to, explaining that even if they never ended to up DIY, they should watch your video so they understand how the lift system works & the importance of proper & frequent lubing. Ton's of Likes! I also shared your video with a friend who has a lot of mechanical/engineering experience. He's going to help me tackle this. Today I ordered the replacement cable direct from Goshen at considerable savings. Should be here in under a week. So, now that I've wasted your time with all that - I have a question I'm hoping you can help answer. The top is in the fully up position. I believe that means the section of cable that's wrapped around the winch is towards the end of the cable. I'm thinking that if there's enough excess cable, I might be able to just cut the damaged part off, crimp off the end, and reattach to the winch. >> And yes I noted your repair by splice. There's tremendous tension on the cable going to the winch. I'm trying to determine if it's to my advantage that the top is all the way UP, or if I really need the weight off in order to replace the cable

Wow Larry you have been the unit! Rough start but you made it thru! So it sounds like you’re in the same position I was in when my electric winch tried to raise the roof on its own and destroyed itself. I ended up with a cockeyed roof stuck in the up position. I used 2x4s to hold it up! Then attached the new winch and connected the cable THEN I was able to turn the winch until there was tension on the cable, lift the roof slightly, remove the 2x4s and lower the roof. This is the video I made. It might help. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKeuo4J3rdOlf5Y I had to source a local winch to save our camping week and later swapped it out with a proper goshen winch. I’m so happy to hear my experiences were able to help others! That’s the beauty of KZbin :) Let me know how your repair goes! Thanks again for sharing your story and for the great feedback 🙏

Just an update for you. I've been sharing & encouraging SylvanSport GO owners to watch your video, especially those having issues. Along with that, I was able to install the new GoshenStamping cable without ever removing the pusher spring tubes. This is only because I couldn't figure out how to drop the pusher spring tubes, so I approached the cable replacement a different way. When I was all done replacing the cable, I couldn't get the back post to go down all the way. It would stop lowering with about 12 inches to go. I racked my brain & rewatched videos, etc trying to figure out what I did wrong. A buddy came over yesterday to help. We figured out how to disconnect the pusher spring tubes. We pulled everything back out & he asked if I had the old cable. I did and he compared the pusher stop? the crimped on piece & found that one cable was different from the other, by about 12 inches. For anyone reading - compare the old cable & the new before proceeding. Might save you a lot of time & trouble! So, now I'm working on getting yet another cable. For the curious, there are no outside bolts to access the pusher spring tube on the SylvanSport Go. You have to crawl under each corner & look inside each corner in a very narrow space in-between the deck & the frame. There you will find a really large single bolt. We used a socket extension to get at it. Once we removed that single bolt, the pusher spring tube assembly dropped & we were able to completely remove the rear pusher springs.

The winch is so dangerous! Thankful no one was hurt. My frustration with the electric winch was pushed to its peak when I called to tell the dealer what had happened, how it pushed our roof to its limits and beyond on its own and caused damage, and the dealer said "oh yeah, thats why you need a shut off switch on those things". He knew! It was common! Yet they didnt say a word to me when I was buying it. But he was willing to come to our house and fix it for big money. The manual winch is the best solution. Thanks for sharing! You won't regret it.

Hi Michael! Thanks for your videos! I have a question. Have you had to change a flat tire on your rockwood extreme sports package trailer? If so, what jack are you using? I have a 1970ESP and am trying to be prepared. However, give the high profile, I am not sure what jack to use, jack on the axle or jack on the frame. Thanks!
@sstressfl
@sstressfl 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words 🙏 I have not jacked up my camper yet. I bought a 16” bottle jack and assumed I would put a couple of pieces of wood underneath to give it the needed height to lift a wheel off the ground. I assumed I would keep the jack as close to the axle as possible but look for a clear solid spot on the primary boxed frame rail.

Great job on the video. I have to say my rear spring tubes were MUCH harder to install on my pop up. The clearance for them was really tight. I had to align the tubes with the center tabs and then push the tubs in at the sides which took some force. i read that you pour a little 30 wt oil down the top of the spring tubes as you install them to help the springs slide smooth

@@sstressfl It went up and down a couple times without issue although the springs were making some strange creaky noises while cranking it up and back down. I know one of the springs has a slight kink towards the end, so I've got new springs coming. I greased the main tube, but maybe not enough. I'm wondering if it would be good to grease the main tube while the top is raised as well.

I finished my manual winch swap over the weekend. Not too hard but little dirty dealing with the greasy old cable and lift springs. Did it twice because goshen sent me wrong cable initially. Props to goshen for sending me correct one quickly. Only issue is mine takes bit of effort to raise thanks to my 15000btu AC and 200w solar panel on the roof. Still glad I did it as I do not have to worry about electric winch issues anymore. Thanks again for your vid made things lot easier seeing process before tackling.
@sstressfl
@sstressfl 2 жыл бұрын
@@wesrains9605 And now that you did it twice you are very capable and practiced! :) Uhhhg! I read that the 15000 AC is about 75 lbs and the 200w solar around another 30 lbs. That's a lot of extra weight for sure! I think one advantage of the manual winch is that you can feel the weight. Its critical to get those safetey bars installed before going inside. But I think with the manual winch it too easily hides the reality of all that weight. Its seriously dangerous and needs to be treated wih a little fear. Glad you got that done! Happy camping my friend.
