One of Liverpool's iconic buildings. Built in 1935, St. Andrews Gardens, also known locally as The Bull Ring was built to house people who had lived in Victorian housing which was due for demolishion. It is the only remaining building of its generation and now home to Liverpools flourishing student population.

I am 65. I grew up in Caryl Gardens, at the Bottom of Hill Street, Opposite the Royal Southern Hospital. Our Neighbours were fantastic, everyone looked out for each other and the only reason we moved was because they were getting Knocked down. If they would have modernised them, we would never have moved from our friends and Neighbours 🙏

My ma used to frequent TJs regularly inthe 50s/60s, accompanied by me and my younger brother, I remember the bus station off Skelhorn St. was the Ribble bus station, also remember the bullring but didn't know anyone from there, also remember the ads for ' John Collier, John Collier the window to watch ' !!

I remember these buildings from the sixties, they were rough areas back then (or thought of). I moved to York in the late seventies, sad to say anything built in York now is usually student accommodation, I now live is a small village in the middle of nowhere.

The style of the building made them look foreboding to strangers. Students everywhere, we seem to be breeding geniuses by the millions.

Great vid, every time I see images of the front of the Bull Ring it fills me with pride. We lived in the second flat above the archway, mam dad, Nin( grandmother) and 9 kids.

An old boy once said to me that every family in there, would have had you around their table if the Police were after you. I recall it as a very rough place. But that is survival for you, and I am sure everyone went onto better lives one way or another. Well, I hope.

Just down the road you have Standish Street, i was born and raised there, was an alter boy in Holy Cross church, which was demolished and now student accomodation, crazy and sad how times change. Vauxhall Gardens also had tenements, it was a great community. My Grandparents ran the pie shop, a pub by the flyover which was recently knocked down.

The importance of close knit working class communities that have been destroyed in cities across the UK is a great loss.They not only provided homes but the love ,care & support that families,kids,elderly & vulnerable needed.People looked out for each other & looked after each other.
@Jeff1photo
@Jeff1photo 9 ай бұрын
That's very true. People got scattered all over Liverpool and those communities were lost forever.

I've heard exactly the same thing about communities in Manchester & I sadly suspect this has been the case all over the UK x@@Jeff1photo

Hi Jeff thank you for the video. As a foreign student who has been studying at the Liverpool Uni for 4 years, its good to know this history! ive walked past St Andrews Garden many times, especially when my gf was living nearby in St Andrew street last year. Its a bit funny to know that St Andrews Garden was once considered 'modern', because you know what, me and my gf thought it looked something like Roman Colosseum or even a prison😂 (especially with those bar steel gates)! it's a cheap students accommodation now, but its Google reviews are not good - i seen a lot of reviewers complained about it.

It didn't have the gates back then, anyone could walk through. It was always a bit foreboding even then.

Liverpool is a magnificent city and I understand why the council is loath to approve just any kind of building in the name of economic progress. I recently went through the council's Tall Building Policy and found it well thought out. There should be space for tall, modern structures but they must fit in with existing architectural heritage for that's what gives the city its character. Indiscriminate building of tall structures without plan should be reserved for insecure cities without a sense-of-self who need such to feel important and to feel they have come into their own, not Liverpool.
@Jeff1photo
@Jeff1photo Жыл бұрын
I like the new builds mixed with the old if it's well thought out and heritage is taken into account. Architecture is now governed by cost, in the past it was built to make a statement of importance.

Like Manchester and Birmingham - an American tourist told me he was so disappointed by these places, just like US towns. He said he was reluctant to go to Liverpool expecting 'more of the same'. he said the place was mind blowing!

That is quite a spectacular building - and I'd agree that it is more Deco than Modernist. I never knew it existed and it's just a pity that so many of the inner-city tenements were demolished in favour of tower blocks outside the centre. That's 'progress' for you..

I took a bus through here one evening. While interesting sightseeing their was a considerable amount of very drunk young guys getting on and off the bus. Kind of got an aggressive feeling from a few of them. Later a couple of drunk thugs tried to rob me of my pack when I got off the bus. They didn’t try that hard luckily they weren’t really very interested in pursuit.
